專題2:閱讀理解(猜測詞義類1)
Many people have said that you can experience all four seasons in a single day in Britain. I finally got it recently.
It was a Saturday morning and raining lightly. Mom and I were going to the cinema. But the rain didn't put us off; we'd had far worse than that!
After the film was over, we could see from the cinema window that the rain was pouring down . But when we reached the exit, the weather was completely normal. There was no rain, just wind and bright sunshine. It was amazing.
Since the weather was looking good, we decided to go to the Botanic Garden in the afternoon. However, on the way there, there was another shower—this time of snow. I was excited about the snow; mom was busy trying to get me into my raincoat. Then, dramatically, the snow stopped. We were startled. And guess what The same thing happened four more times that afternoon.
If you think that was the end, think again. The next day, on Sunday, when I pulled back the curtains, the world was covered in a blanket of snow. I quickly got dressed and ran out of the house. A few minutes later, I'd made a big snowman in the back garden. The snow was already up to my heels and I didn't think it would stop the whole day.
But a little later it did stop. That was at 11 in the morning; by 4 pm all the snow had disappeared. The sun had come out again, shining brightly as "normal"!

Daily things Can you think of everyday items made of these materials Soda cans are good example. They are made out of metal. Magazines and newspaper are made out of paper. So are cereal boxes. Some bottles of juice are made out of glass. Bags and yogurt containers are made out of plastic. There are many things that can be recycled.
Loop These things are usually stamped with the recycling loop. It has 3 arrows that go in a triangular (三角形) circle. This shows that cycle (循環) continues. Items are thrown away but continue their lives as something else.

Social customs and ways of behaving change all the time. Things that were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago, it was considered to be impolite behavior for a man to smoke on the street. No man who thought of himself as being a gentleman would make a fool of himself by smoking when a lady was in the room.
Customs also differ from country to country. Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country Or that doesn't matter What about table manners
The Americans and British people not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example, in both America and England, people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seats to women, and so will most Americans. Promptness (準時) is important both in England and in America. That is, the dinner guest either arrives close to the time that has been made or calls up to explain his delay (耽誤).
The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable—especially if they are your guests. There is an old story about a man who gave a very formal dinner party. When the food was served, one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife. The other guests were amused or greatly surprised, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way. It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable.

People read books less often these days. With the invention of radios, televisions and most recently, the Internet and computer games, it seems that reading books is no longer a popular activity. However, I believe that books are an important part of our lives.
Books offer an outstanding wealth of learning and are at a lower price than taking a course. Books can make people cleverer, because heavy readers have greater knowledge of how things work.
Everything in today's society requires (需要) reading. Imagine trying to do something as simple as reading the directions on a medicine bottle without good reading skills. Someone cannot understand them and might become very sick or even die.
Even something as simple as walking or driving through the city could become very dangerous without enough reading. Sometimes, you must be able to understand what is written and the meaning of it.
Some people say that reading is a waste of time and we can do better things with our time. Even if we don't read books,we still read every day, and reading books can strengthen (加強) our abilities. Reading is one of the greatest things we can do in our spare time.

She and her father have made many friends through the sport. "Everyone gets along and everyone knows each other," she said. "I like how everyone treats each other." The respect that Jesselyn and other boxers show to one another is rooted in their shared understanding of the sacrifice it takes to make it in the ring.

From red apples and yellow lemons to blue berries and green melons, fruit comes in many different colours. Why do different kinds of fruits have so many colours
According to Lu Wei from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, fruit colours actually come from their different pigments, such as red or yellow carotenoid (類胡蘿卜素) and blue or purple anthocyanin (花青素). These pigments appear in different amounts, depending on the fruit's environment. This causes the fruit to turn a certain colour.
To find out how environment affects fruit colours, Chinese scientists studied more than 280 different fruit colours, including white, red, blue, purple and black.
They found that red fruit tends to grow in cooler places. And instead of just growing in one place, you can find them growing in many places around the world. Blue and purple fruit mostly grows in warm places. These fruits tend to grow a lot in just one specific area. The scientists also found that the closer the fruit is to the equator (赤道), the darker its colour will be.
Animals have also had an impact on the evolution (進化) of fruit colours. Animals eat fruit and drop the seeds in other places later. This helps the fruit spread and grow in different places. Therefore, in order to attract animals, some fruits develop colours that are easy for animals to see.
However, animals see colours in a different way. Fruit needs to develop colours that are suited to animals' visual (視覺的) abilities. For example, birds can see red more easily than humans can. Therefore, there is more red fruit in areas where birds live. The lemurs (狐猴) of Madagascar are red-green colour-blind. Many yellow fruit can be found there, as they can easily see this colour.

Always believe in yourself no matter what happens to you and love the person that you are. These are laws of life that are useful to everyone. I think that before people can live happy lives, they must believe in and accept themselves.
The hardest thing for you to do is to look in the mirror and like what you see, and then be thankful. And believe you can finish anything you try to do. To live a comfortable life, you must start with believing in yourself.
I have struggled with believing in myself so many times in my life. Struggling with little tasks such as completing homework or memorising a piece on the piano, I would get so upset. But you never realize how much easier your life will become until you say, "I can do this!"
Four or five years ago, I began taking piano lessons. One day, recital time was coming near, but I had a piece that I couldn't completely ing home with a feeling of sadness, I just considered I could not achieve this task.
I sat at my piano and told myself that I would never get it finished. But on second thought, I could memorise it. So, I tried my best to play and play. Finally, I did end up finishing the piece, and the recital was able to go smoothly. The important point is that looking back on this time in my life, I can see how important it is to believe that I can complete anything I want to do if I try my best.
Now, when I become upset with a piano piece, I never give up and think that I cannot do it. Always beginning with confidence, I sit down and tell myself that I can achieve my goal if I put my mind to it. I realize that I should have this mind in everything I do.
So, dear friend, never give up, and believe that you can complete anything if you set your mind and heart on it.
