“Keep learning and strive to be the best in your field” is the motto of Xu Zhenchao, a 74-year-old technician at Shandong Port Group’ s Qingdao Port in Shandong province. It's an ethic that has guided him throughout his career, leading to his recent recognition as a“People’ s Craftsman”.
When he started working at the port in 1974, he operated a lifting machine. To swiftly master the skill, Xu dedicated himself to practicing for hours and finally achieved proficiency. Xu's professionalism saw him selected as one of the first container bridge crane (起重機) operators in 1984. By studying diligently, Xu gradually became an expert in operating and repairing bridge cranes, In 2000, when the port initiated the construction of a new terminal. Xu was appointed as the chief commander overseeing the installation of cranes. After more than 40 days of hard work, a massive bridge crane, weighing l,300 metric tons and towering 75 meters high, finally stood on the expansive dock at Qianwan. The advanced crane equipment enabled Xu and his colleagues to set a world record for container handling by unloading 3,400 standard containers from a ship and loading them onto trucks in just six hours.
In 2006, after two years of technical research and development, Xu and his team converted(改造) diesel- powered(柴油動力) tire cranes to run on electricity, saving the port 20 million yuan a year in operating costs and eliminating air pollution.

Lisa Park, 48, was suffering from gall bladder cancer, a rare but serious condition that usually only affects people in old age. “I was given a year to live,” said Park. It was a severe diagnosis, yet her prospect has recently taken an unexpected turn for the better.
Park was recently asked to join a revolutionary UK research programme known as Determine. It has been set up to target individuals with rare tumors(腫瘤) in the hope that drugs licensed for other disease could be appropriated as a new treatment.
“By definition, rare cancers are uncommon,” said one of the project’ s leaders, oncologist(腫瘤學家) Matthew Krebs of Manchester University.” However, there are so many that in total they represent around 20% of all cancers diagnosed globally each year —— more than any single type of cancer including lung and breast cancer.” Rare cancers’ total impact on the health service is therefore significant but there are few treatments currently available to help patients.
Determine has been set up to find if drugs that are already prescribed by doctors for more common types of cancer could benefit patients with rare cancers for which they have not been licensed. The study is led by Manchester University and involves several other leading medical centres in the UK. The ultimate aim is to match old drugs to new cancers. The crucial point is that scientists have discovered some very rare tumours possess abnormalities that could make them susceptible to treatments developed for common cancers. “We will be able to fast track the approval of any promising drugs, opening the door to treatments for patients who have been left with limited options,” said Iain Foulkes, director of research and innovation at Cancer Research UK.
The approach has already produced promising results for Park. “I know I still have a joumey ahead of me but my cancer has been reduced to manageable tumors, and that has been a very welcome outcome,” said Park.

A newly-developed Android phone app is able to remotely estimate pressure in a person's arteries(動脈) as their heart squeezes, providing potentially life-saving details on individual health without the need for specialized equipment.
Rather than having to take a trip to the doctor or use a dedicated device, individuals might one day be able to make use of the phone in their pocket, making the innovation particularly important in underserved populations where access to medical care is limited.
Developed by researchers from the University of Pittsburgh, the app works by taking a variety of readings from the accelerometer, camera, and touch sensors built into modern smartphones. What makes the app smart is the way it gets users to change the position of their hands to change blood flow, and apply a number of instructed touches to the phone screen to get the right pulse pressure readings. “Because of gravity, there's a pressure change in your thumb when you raise your hands up above your heart, and using the phone’ s accelerometer, you’ re able to convert that into the relative change in pressure,” says biomedical engineer Vishaal Dhamoth aran from the University of Pittsburgh.
In tests on 24 people and cross-referencing with a larger database, the app method detected pulse pressure to a reasonably accurate level, within around 8 m m HG. As development continues, the app accuracy level will most likely improve on that even further.
The researchers admit they’ ll need to work on“changing the mindset” around using pulse pressure as a blood pressure indicator—— but it's the best solution we' ve seen yet for taking this crucial reading using a normal smartphone. “Development of a portable blood pressure measurement device that does not require any external calibration(外部校準) is unrealistic— such a device currently does not exist,” says biomedical engineer Sanjeev Shroff, from the University of Pittsburgh. “The research work reported in this publication is an important step in the right direction.”

M: With wildlife shots, it's not always the case that you can get the animals to behave in the way you want. When you spend much time in the ocean though, you get to predict behaviors and you get used to knowing when and where you' re going to get particular shots. But often there's only a second to grab the shot you have in mind, which is the hardest part. With div er shots, communication is tough underwater, so everything needs planning ahead.
W: What advice would you give to new underwater photographers
M: Well, the most important thing is to choose your subject very carefully; find something that you can get close to, that's not going to swim away, and that's a not too big or too small size.
W: So what's next for you
M: I'm planning a trip to Sardinia-within easy reach of the airport at Olbia. And the water's lovely and warm But these aren't really the draws for me. It's more the underwater landscapes —— like the soft corals and the fish life.
