“Keep learning and strive to be the best in your field” is the motto of Xu Zhenchao, a 74-year-old technician at Shandong Port Group’ s Qingdao Port in Shandong province. It's an ethic that has guided him throughout his career, leading to his recent recognition as a“People’ s Craftsman”.
When he started working at the port in 1974, he operated a lifting machine. To swiftly master the skill, Xu dedicated himself to practicing for hours and finally achieved proficiency. Xu's professionalism saw him selected as one of the first container bridge crane (起重機) operators in 1984. By studying diligently, Xu gradually became an expert in operating and repairing bridge cranes, In 2000, when the port initiated the construction of a new terminal. Xu was appointed as the chief commander overseeing the installation of cranes. After more than 40 days of hard work, a massive bridge crane, weighing l,300 metric tons and towering 75 meters high, finally stood on the expansive dock at Qianwan. The advanced crane equipment enabled Xu and his colleagues to set a world record for container handling by unloading 3,400 standard containers from a ship and loading them onto trucks in just six hours.
In 2006, after two years of technical research and development, Xu and his team converted(改造) diesel- powered(柴油動力) tire cranes to run on electricity, saving the port 20 million yuan a year in operating costs and eliminating air pollution.
“He is a man born for the port,” said Guo Lei, his apprentice(學徒), who is now an expert crane operator,“He shows technical workers the importance of learning and innovating.”

Lisa Park, 48, was suffering from gall bladder cancer, a rare but serious condition that usually only affects people in old age. “I was given a year to live,” said Park. It was a severe diagnosis, yet her prospect has recently taken an unexpected turn for the better.
Park was recently asked to join a revolutionary UK research programme known as Determine. It has been set up to target individuals with rare tumors(腫瘤) in the hope that drugs licensed for other disease could be appropriated as a new treatment.
“By definition, rare cancers are uncommon,” said one of the project’ s leaders, oncologist(腫瘤學家) Matthew Krebs of Manchester University.” However, there are so many that in total they represent around 20% of all cancers diagnosed globally each year —— more than any single type of cancer including lung and breast cancer.” Rare cancers’ total impact on the health service is therefore significant but there are few treatments currently available to help patients.
Determine has been set up to find if drugs that are already prescribed by doctors for more common types of cancer could benefit patients with rare cancers for which they have not been licensed. The study is led by Manchester University and involves several other leading medical centres in the UK. The ultimate aim is to match old drugs to new cancers. The crucial point is that scientists have discovered some very rare tumours possess abnormalities that could make them susceptible to treatments developed for common cancers. “We will be able to fast track the approval of any promising drugs, opening the door to treatments for patients who have been left with limited options,” said Iain Foulkes, director of research and innovation at Cancer Research UK.
The approach has already produced promising results for Park. “I know I still have a joumey ahead of me but my cancer has been reduced to manageable tumors, and that has been a very welcome outcome,” said Park.
28. Why was Determine set up
A. To develop new drugs for common cancers. B. To treat people with lung and breast cancer.
C. To deal with ageneral cancer research further. D. To target rare tumors and find new treatments.
29. How does the programme plan to do with rare cancers
A. Develop completely new drugs. B. Offer fin ancial assistance for the research.
C. Use drugs available for common cancers. D. Provide more professional care for patients.
30. What does the underlined phrase“susceptible” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Hard. B. Sensitive. C. Unaffected. D. Different.
31. What's the attitude of Park towards the treatment
A. Optimistic. B. Uncertain. C. Indifferent. D. Doubtful.

A newly-developed Android phone app is able to remotely estimate pressure in a person's arteries(動脈) as their heart squeezes, providing potentially life-saving details on individual health without the need for specialized equipment.
Rather than having to take a trip to the doctor or use a dedicated device, individuals might one day be able to make use of the phone in their pocket, making the innovation particularly important in underserved populations where access to medical care is limited.
Developed by researchers from the University of Pittsburgh, the app works by taking a variety of readings from the accelerometer, camera, and touch sensors built into modern smartphones. What makes the app smart is the way it gets users to change the position of their hands to change blood flow, and apply a number of instructed touches to the phone screen to get the right pulse pressure readings. “Because of gravity, there's a pressure change in your thumb when you raise your hands up above your heart, and using the phone’ s accelerometer, you’ re able to convert that into the relative change in pressure,” says biomedical engineer Vishaal Dhamoth aran from the University of Pittsburgh.
In tests on 24 people and cross-referencing with a larger database, the app method detected pulse pressure to a reasonably accurate level, within around 8 m m HG. As development continues, the app accuracy level will most likely improve on that even further.
The researchers admit they’ ll need to work on“changing the mindset” around using pulse pressure as a blood pressure indicator—— but it's the best solution we' ve seen yet for taking this crucial reading using a normal smartphone. “Development of a portable blood pressure measurement device that does not require any external calibration(外部校準) is unrealistic— such a device currently does not exist,” says biomedical engineer Sanjeev Shroff, from the University of Pittsburgh. “The research work reported in this publication is an important step in the right direction.”
32. Why is the newly-developed phone app particularly important
A. It's much easier to access. B. It's money-saving.
C. It's a specialized facility. D. It's more accurate.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about the app
A. The special function of it.
B. The working principle of it.
C. The purpose of developing it.
D. The inspiration for developing it.
34. What can we infer about the future of the app in smartphones
A. It will have a bright prospect.
B. It will come into the market soon.
C. It will be built in every smartphone.
D. It will replace the traditional equipment.
35. What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A. To test an app. B. To improve an app.
C. To advertise an app. D. To introduce an app.

Easy Ways to Reduce Your Food Waste
Shop smart.
Most people tend to buy more food than they need. To avoid buying more food than you need, make frequent trips to the supermarket every few days rather than doing a big shopping trip once a week.36 This will help you reduce impulse buying(沖動消費) and reduce food waste as well.
Store food correctly.
Improper storage leads to a massive amount of food waste. Many people are unsure how to store fruits and vegetables, which can lead to their eventually going bad. For example, potatoes, tomatoes, and onions should never be refrigerated. 37
38
The consumer demand for perfect fruits and vegetables has led major supermarkets to buy only picture-perfect produce from farmers. This leads to tons of perfectly good food going to waste. It's such a big issue that major supermarkets have started offering“ugly” fruits and vegetables at a discount in an attempt to reduce
waste.
Pack your lunch.
Although going out to lunch with co-workers may be enjoyable, it is also costly and can contribute to food waste. 39 If you tend to have unfinished home-cooked meals, pack them up for a satisfying and healthy workday lunch.
Understand expiration (到期) dates.
“Sell by” and“Best by” are just two of the many confusing terms companies use on food labels to let consumers know when a product will most likely go bad. The truth is, most food that has just passed its expiration date is still safe to eat. “Sell by” is used to inform sellers when the product should be sold or removed from the shelves. 40 Neither of these terms means that the product is unsafe to eat after the given date.
A. Don't be a perfectionist.
B. Get creative in the kitchen.
C. These items should be kept at room temperature.
D. “Best by” is a suggested date for consumers to use their products by.
E. A helpful way to reduce food waste is to bring lunch to work with you.
F. Additionally, try making a list of items that you need to buy and stick to that list.
G. Not surprisingly, industrialized countries waste more food than developing nations.

Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among whom was Fahad. He was one of the richest kids in his class, but he was a very arrogant boy who thought everyone else was a loser. But as Asad was new, he didn't know much about Fahad.
When he went towards Fahad and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch, Fahad laughed and said, “I didn't know you were a loser, maybe a beggar ” Fahad laughed out so loud that other kids also heard it and made fun of the situation. Asad didn't answer Fahad, and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.
When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet. He picked it up and recognized it was Fahad's, as he remembered Fahad showing it to his friends and telling them that his uncle had bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.

Dear Tom,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for the invaluable assistance you have provided me with during my journey in the English Corner last academic year.
Your patience in correcting my grammar and pronunciation has significantly enhanced my language skills. I particularly remember the times you helped me understand idiomatic expressions and cultural nuances, making my understanding of English richer and deeper.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being such a wonderful mentor and friend. I look forward to continuing our friendship and perhaps even challenging each other to new linguistic heights in the future.

第二節 (滿分25分)
At first, Asad wanted to keep it a secret and punish Fahad. However, it was not easy. He felt his cheeks blushing and a sense of guilt rising inside of him. Glancing first at Fahad, who was still chatting happily, and then at the wallet in his hand, Asad finally made up his mind. He got up and went straight to Fahad and his group. Upon seeing Asad approach him, Fahad said, “Hey loser!
You okay Still want the money ”“No,” replied Asad, “I just came to return your wallet which you have dropped over there.” Fahad stood shocked for a second. All his friends were silent too.
Then Fahad said, “Why are you giving it back ”“Because I was told by my family that' honesty won't let you down,''' explained Asad. Fahad avoided Asad's shining eyes. What followed was an awkwardly long silence, which was eventually broken by Asad's stomach growling loudly. Surprisingly, the arrogant boy reached out his hand and asked, “What about having lunch together ” Before Asad could say anything, Fahad quickly added, “Of course, my treat.” It was on that very day that Asad made his first friend in the new school, and he truly recognized the value of sincerity and honesty in a relationship.

(Text 1)
W: My four o’ clock appointment has been changed again.
M: What time have they arranged it for this time
W: They asked me to be there an hour earlier.
M: You'd better leave home by two o' clock then, to be on the safe side(Text 2)
M: Can you have these jeans mended for me I'm no good at that
W: You must be kidding. I'm no good either. And besides, I need to do some other chores like the ironing. You'd better turn to a professional tailor.
(Text 3)
W: Can you finish the report by Friday
M: Well, I'm not sure. There's loads of work to do on it.
W: Well, within a week, then
M:I' ll do it before the end of next week, I promise(Text 4)
W:I just can't understand this long delay!
M: Wait a minute! I think they' re announcing our train. It's arriving on platform 2.
W: Good, we should be there in an hour, and then we can drive straight to Bob's house to have dinner
(Text 5)
W: It's time she should leave!
M: Come on, Trish! You' re overdoing it
W: Oh, that's easy for you to say. You don't have to sit next to her and listen to her going on and on about her work
(Text 6)
W: Hi Harry! You look like you' ve lost weight! Have you been on a diet
M: No. I joined our local running club
W: That sounds like an interesting idea. When do you go
M:I attend the running club on weekdays, except Thursdays because I have my piano lesson
W: Where do you usually go Do you use the running track at the school Or the running machine at the school gym
M: No, we always run off-road to enjoy the countryside!
(Text 7)
M: This computer is maddening. The programs run really fast, but when I first start it, it seems to take hours before it actually gets ready. Is that a virus or something
W: Of course it's fast. It has the latest processor available. You aren't online so it's not a virus. Likely your problem is that there are too many background programs loading when you start.
M:I'm not sure I know what you mean by background programs and loading!
W: Okay, restart it and I' ll have a look. I'm no expert, so we' ll see what's loading. The ones that aren't needed can just be deleted. It will be fine once we do that(Text 8)
W: Excuse me, sir. I need some supplies for my office, but I'm not sure where to start. Ms.McBeal told me that you would be able to help me.
M: Sure. Tick the items you require on a blue supply form, which is kept at the front desk. Then, you need to get it signed by the leader of your department as required. Besides, it's a good idea to ask other people in your department if they have any additional needs.
W: OK. By the way, should I check the annual budget
M: Since you' re just ordering basic supplies, there's no need for that.
W: Thanks so much for your help. I' ll get the form and fill it out now.
(Text 9)
W: My guest today is the photographer Alex Mustard, who specializes in underwater shots. His cooperationl with Nick Hanna, a master storyteller, resulted in the book entitled The Art of Diving. Alex, how much is luck and how much is judgment to get great shots
M: With wildlife shots, it's not always the case that you can get the animals to behave in the way you want. When you spend much time in the ocean though, you get to predict behaviors and you get used to knowing when and where you' re going to get particular shots. But often there's only a second to grab the shot you have in mind, which is the hardest part. With div er shots, communication is tough underwater, so everything needs planning ahead.
W: What advice would you give to new underwater photographers
M: Well, the most important thing is to choose your subject very carefully; find something that you can get close to, that's not going to swim away, and that's a not too big or too small size.
W: So what's next for you
M: I'm planning a trip to Sardinia-within easy reach of the airport at Olbia. And the water's lovely and warm But these aren't really the draws for me. It's more the underwater landscapes —— like the soft corals and the fish life.
(Text 10)
W: Thank you for joining our wellness workshop. I'm Richard Simmons. Before we begin, I want to share some advice. Staying active is essential for a healthy lifestyle, but it's important to avoid common workout mistakes. The first error is the lack of variety in exercising. Engaging in the same routine can lead you to see no progress. To prevent this, I suggest changing your workout plans monthly. Do diverse activities like yoga to improve flexibility, or weightlifting to build strength. Variety not only prevents boredom but also improves your overall fitness.
Another common error is overtraining. It's important to understand that rest is just as crucial for muscle recovery and growth as the workout itself. It's not always about the intensity or frequency of your workouts. I recommend aiming for two intense sessions per week. On the days you' re not pushing yourself hard. consider engaging in lighter activities, such as fast walking or leisurely cycling. This approach balances physical effort with recovery. It's also advisable to have at least one day of complete rest weekly to allow your body to fully recover. Remember, wellness is a marathon; listen to your body and make adjustments accordingly.
