The words in red indicate possibility.

2) Will the meaning of sentence (a) change if we replace “could” with “must” or “might”
If we replace “could” with “must”, the meaning of sentence (a) will change. It means the speaker is quite sure about the statement. If we replace “could” with “might”, the meaning of sentence (a) will remain more or less the same. “Could” and “might” in affirmative sentences have a similar meaning when indicating possibility.

3) What happens if we change “must” and “might” in sentences (b) and (c) into “could”
If we change “must” in sentence (b) into “could”, it means the speaker is not sure about the statement, and it’s only a possibility. If we change “might” in sentence (c) into “could”, it means it’s impossible for the children to receive presents.

情態動詞must, can/could, may/might均可表示推測, 它們可以對過去、現在或將來的情況作出語氣強弱不同的推測。
表示肯定的推測時：
各情態動詞語氣從弱到強依次為
might → may → could → can → must；
把握推測語氣的特點，選擇恰當的情態動詞。

can’t / couldn’t語氣較強，意為“不可能”；
may not / might not語氣較弱，意為“可能不”。
must的否定形式mustn’t不表示否定推測，而是表示“不許可”或“不應該”。

① must只用于肯定句中，意為“一定，準是”。如:

② could多用于否定句和疑問句中。如：
He looks young. He couldn’t be over 50.

3. 對過去的情況進行推測時，用“情態動詞+ have done”。
“情態動詞+ have done”是高考的熱點，在做此類題時，要仔細體會題干中所提供的信息，尤其注意題干中給出的時態。
I didn’t see Alex. He might have gone home.
I couldn’t have left my bag on the bus.
They must have gotten lost or they’d be here by now.

一定，想必。表示對已經發生的事情的肯定推測，語氣較強。
It must have rained last night. The ground is wet.
may / might have done
可能已經，或許已經。表示對已經發生過的情況的肯定推測，語氣稍弱。
He may / might have given you more help, even though he was busy.
could have done
不可能。表示對過去發生的否定推測。
They can’t have gone out, because the light is on.
can’t / couldn’t have done
表示過去本來能夠做某事而實際上沒有做
He could have passed the exam, but he was too careless.

To celebrate the Mid-Autumn Day, we usually have a few days off. It is a great occasion for a family to get together. During the festival, we often drink some wine. Besides, there is a kind of traditional Chinese food—moon cakes. The whole family usually admire the moon as they eat moon cakes. People often visit their friends and relatives with some delicious moon cakes and some fresh fruits.
