Cooking and eating were such an important part of Eliza Acton's world that I began to think of her ingredients(原料)almost as characters in some books.I looked through her cookery books,cooking from them regularly and writing lists of the ingredients she used.I often had to cook the dishes,sauces,and cakes to fully understand them.More importantly, I had to eat them very slowly.Food is about many things,particularly if you're both cooking and eating as Eliza and her assistant were.I had to consider smell,taste,and temperature.

From clever tool use to complex songs,many bird behaviors are known to be transmitted (傳播)socially and persist across generations,which scientists define as animal“culture” . Now a study suggests culture might play a role in bird architecture(建筑藝術),too.
Researchers analyzed more than 400 structures (結構)built by 43 different groups of sparrows in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa.These birds live and work together to build a nest (鳥巢)and many shelters from grass.The group's dominant female then lays eggs in the nest,which has a long,tube-like entrance.Individual birds sleep nearby in the U-shaped shelters,which have both an entrance and an exit.
The scientists found that different gatherings of birds,even those living only a few meters from one another,built very different tube structures.“The largest diversity was in how short or long the structures are,"says study lead author Maria C.Tello-Ramos,a cognitive ecologist at the University of Hull in England,“Tube width also varied among groups."Furthermore,when outsiders joined,they adapted to this style.
To examine why the groups built differently,the team analyzed factors that can determine a nest for a given bird species:weather conditions,tree height,individuals'body size and genetic relatedness.Yet,the result startled the team that none of these factors seemed to play a relevant role in shaping how the Kalahari sparrows built their nests,which the researchers reported in Science.
“Okay,so what is left ”Tello-Ramos and her team explain.“Cultural transmission might be the key to nest building.In our paper,we haven't gotten there yet with experiments, but we have very good clues that indicate the key might be it."Christina Riehl,an evolutionary biologist at Princeton University,says,“Though there aren't enough experiments,I think the study will inspire future research in a really good way and offers a great starting point for deeper dives into how culture shapes birds'building behaviors.”

A half dozen women,in their 30s,40s and 50s,gather in a classroom in Phoenix for a few hours on a weekday morning.They are all caregivers of young children and participants in an Arizona state-funded initiative called Kith and Kin.The program aims to give family, friend and neighbor caregivers the kind of training that licensed(領有許可證的)caregivers are required to have.
A study in the south Phoenix area found that 60%of children from birth to 5 years old were being cared for outside of licensed child care settings.That study led the nonprofit organization Candelen to launch Kith and Kin in 1999.“There was the high need to provide both training and support in communities where families with young children live,"says program director Angela Tapia.
Now,25 years later,programs like Kith and Kin are getting renewed attention on account of the fragile(脆弱的) state of the child care industry.There's increased urgency from policymakers and businesses to ensure communities have access to affordable,high- quality child care,paving the way for parents,especially women,to work.
The sessions are paid for by Arizona's government.While most federal(聯邦制的)and state funding for child care industry in the U.S.goes to licensed settings,Arizona is one of a number of states that have long recognized the importance of informal caregiving arrangements that are allowing millions of parents to go to work.
