It’s a truth universally acknowledged that kids are rarely fond of eating their greens. But fruits and vegetables are the foundation of a healthy diet, which makes parents come up with creative solutions to get their children to happily eat them. That’s how food artist Sarah Beach came up with an idea - turn these ingredients into characters, animals, objects, and even inspiring messages. Her delicious creations, which she shares on her Edible Food Art For Kids Instagram account, are also a feast for the eyes.
Beach’s adventure in the world of food art began in 2018, with a simple rabbit design. Her food artworks not only put a smile on her children’s faces, but also keep them coming back for more. For the artist, food art has also provided her with a way to relax after work.
“Most of my designs start due to an event or idea I have. Then I look which fruits would work to make the design appealing to kids,” she said, “Colors are key.” Staying true to her purpose, Beach only uses fresh fruit and vegetables, along with seeds, nuts, and occasionally a touch of chocolate. Her art does not contain any pasta (面食), food dye or other additives.
Sticking to her values around food has made her notice the versatility (多功能) of each ingredient. For Beach, blueberries lend themselves perfectly for various elements. “I love working with blueberries. You can use them for eyes, skin, lines and background. Very healthy and delicious as well.”
The most basic of her creations take her only around 30 minutes to create, while some more complex designs take up to two hours. “I have two kids at home and it’s rare that I can finish one without interruption,” she shares, “I don’t really have a creative process. I get ideas when I listen to the news, read books or scroll online. I love healthy food and also care for humanity. So my fruit art illustrates my believes and passions.”

Australian scientists have been trying to learn about hard-to-reach sea floor. But studying the sea floor is difficult. Underwater robots are expensive, often move slowly, and they can’t go everywhere.
So scientists at the University of Adelaide came up with a different plan — attaching cameras to sea lions. The sea lions could cover large areas of the ocean floor quickly and dive deeply to places humans can’t reach.
The researchers chose eight healthy female sea lions because females would soon return to land to feed their young pups so the scientists could easily get the cameras back. The scientists put the sea lions to sleep and temporarily attached a light-weight camera and GPS tracker to the animals. They made sure the sea lions were treated well. Before long, the sea lions woke up and headed out to sea.
Over the next few days, the eight sea lions traveled 348 miles underwater, diving as deep as 360 feet below the surface. In all, the animals collected 89 hours of video, letting the researchers see exactly what the animals saw.
The videos recorded the sea floor in places that had never been seen before. The researchers were able to identify six different types of sea floor environments, such as areas with lots of marine plants, or with bare sand. The videos gave the team a good idea of the kinds of plants and animals living in each of those environments.
Using Artificial Intelligence tool and the information from the videos, the researchers can predict what the sea floor is like. If the AI tool is given the sea’s temperature at the surface, and how far the location is from land, it can guess what the ocean floor will be like. And it’s correct 98% of the time.
Thanks to the sea lions, the scientists now have a better idea about what the sea floor is like, even in areas that haven’t been studied. As one researcher said, “They’re giving us a window into their world that we haven’t had before.”

“To get ahead in this world, don’t we need a little bit of perfectionism ” As someone who has researched perfectionism for over a decade, I’m asked this question a lot. And I used to think that was true. It’s hard to succeed nowadays. You’ve got to sacrifice yourself, keep pushing well beyond what’s comfortable, and live life on your tiptoes. That’s just the common things in a competitive society where there are only a few winners, I believed.
Yet, research finds that perfectionism has no relationship with performance. Perfectionistic people struggle really hard, but they’re no more likely to be successful. One reason is that perfectionistic people work hard but unsustainably so. They often find themselves in the sapping zone and opposite returns on their efforts.
Another is that many perfectionists are world champions at selfdoubt. When things get tough, when it looks like failure is heading their way, the anticipated shame and embarrassment are so fierce that perfectionistic people are unwilling to put forth any further effort that might allow others to discover their shortcomings. So, they simply give up to avoid fears of failure, which makes failure more likely.
For perfectionists, dialing down goals and aiming for excellence instead doesn’t usually work. On the contrary, it’s important to learn to embrace the inevitability of setbacks, failures, and things not going quite as planned. It’s important to be able to sit comfortably with these humanizing experiences, to let them be, and not need to drive them out of existence.
So we shouldn’t struggle to be perfect because perfectionism doesn’t lead to success. Instead, do recognize that learning to embrace imperfections and setbacks helps us to accept ourselves and keep moving forward.

Eventually my game improved. 【答案】By the fifth minute, I was put in on the court. As I dribbled, the other team’s players were on defense just like huge trees and our guys struggled to wave their hands at me. Panicked, I was lost on who to pass the ball to. Then I heard my son cheering and felt his eyes on the ball, on my hands, and on my neck. I pulled myself together, spotted the timing and passed to our best guy. He scored! This eased my tension and allowed me to play more confidently till the last minute.
Despite our efforts, we still lost the game by four points in the end. I sat down hard breathing heavily, more from emotion than exhaustion. With the agony of defeat, I looked over at Ivan and winked, the sweat running down my nose. “You dribbled incredibly well, passed the ball successfully and scored ten points! Great, Dad!” Ivan high-fived me. I felt more than encouraged and moved as I had worked my tail off to live up to the expectations from both my dear son and myself. It seems that a Dad doesn’t have to be the high scorer to be the big hero.
