On the website of the EU Prize for Women Innovators, there are dozens of inspiring stories of female leaders alongside pictures of these professional-looking women wearing single color business suits. But when we move the page down a little further, Ailbhe and Izzy’s pictures pop off the page, with their eye-catching colors and bright rainbow patterns, which is entirely in line with their company belief “If you can’t stand up, stand out.”The fashionable sisters took the world by storm with their personalized wheelchair decorations.
Ailbhe, now 25, was four years old when she became a big sister to Izzy. Although Izzy was born disabled and couldn’t move from the waist down, her courage and energy deeply impressed Ailbhe and the two sisters developed a lifelong friendship. They spent hours as children decorating Izzy’s wheelchairs and her other mobility devices. So when Ailbhe graduated from the National College of Art and had to complete a final year project, she knew what to choose—dress up a wheelchair’s wheels! Ailbhe said, “The wheelchair itself didn’t show Izzy’s attitudes to life, or her energetic personality. It was ugly and made you lose confidence. I thought there might be a way of bridging that gap. ”
Ailbhe’s project was extremely well received at her school’s design show. Izzy loved the new wheels as well. A state organization helped the sisters work with fashion designers and get their business to take off. The next step for the sisters was partnering with big companies which were interested in representing people with disabilities. They turned to Disney. After all, this cooperation would involve one of their favorite activities—watching Disney movies! Besides, Disney was willing to donate 10% of profits to a charity that helps disabled children, In addition, the company promised to realize the dreams of children with disabilities.
The sisters are excited for their creativity to make life in a wheelchair more fashionable, fun and personalized.

How did the ant steal the lion’s dinner This isn’t the beginning of one of Aesop’s Fables. It’s the finding of a new study about ants and lions.
The whistling-thorn tree is a common sight on the plains of the east African grassland. Each tree is home to native acacia ants, which shelter inside the spines and drink juice from the tree. In return, when an elephant tries to eat the tree, ants climb up inside its nose and bite from the inside out. This has allowed the trees and the ants to grow well.
The big-headed ants arrived in this area between 2002 and 2005. They kill local acacia ants wherever they find them, robbing local whistling-thorn trees of their brave defenders against hungry elephants. Without ants to bite them, the elephants tear up the thorn trees, opening up the grassland, which makes it harder for lions to catch their preferred zebra meals.
In the new study, wildlife ecologist Jake Goheen and his colleagues could have used drones or satellite images to study tree cover, but “we don’t have that kind of money,” Goheen says. Instead, the researchers tracked their collared lions, and then got down on hands and knees near the lions’ recent kills, using a range finder to measure the openness of the area. Areas with big-headed ants, the team showed, had 2.67 times higher visibility than areas without - meaning that lions could see farther, but so could their prey.
Over the three years of the study, zebra dinners decreased from 67 percent to 42 percent of lion kills. But the lions didn’t go hungry. Instead, they went for beef. Buffalo kills increased from zero to 42 percent of kills over the study period. “It’s a risky diet,” Goheen says. “Buffalo are big and feisty, and lions hunting buffalo are more likely to be injured.”
“The study shows that the disruption (干擾) can have serious effects on other species in the community,” says Goheen. “Those effects can be unexpected and indirect. Changes could also have an impact on food webs in other ecosystems.”
28. What is the relationship between acacia ants and whistling-thorn trees like
A. Independent. B. Inharmonious. C. Competitive. D.Win-win.
29. What do we know about the study in paragraph 4
A. It is worthy but indirect. B. It is specific but unreliable.
C. It is demanding but economical. D. It is expensive but effective.
30. What does the underlined word “feisty” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Stable. B. Wild. C. Exceptional. D. Inactive.
31. What phenomenon does Goheen describe in the last paragraph
A. The butterfly effect. B. The greenhouse effect.
C. The bystander effect. D. The observer effect.

The latest assessments of the health effects of coffee and caffeine (咖啡因), its main active ingredient, are comforting indeed. 32 They include Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, depression and all sorts of cancers.
33 They showed consuming four or five eight-ounce cups of coffee a day has been associated with reduced death rates. In a study of more than 200,000 participants followed for up to 30 years, those who drank three to five cups of coffee a day, with or without caffeine, were 15 percent less likely to die early from all causes than the people who avoided coffee. Perhaps most dramatic was a 50 percent reduction in the risk of suicide among both men and women who were moderate coffee drinkers, perhaps by boosting production of brain chemicals. 34
A report was published last summer by a renowned research team at the Harvard Hool of Public Health. It concluded that although current evidence may not guarantee recommending coffee or caffeine to prevent disease, for most people drinking coffee in moderation “can be part of a healthy lifestyle.” 35 In the past, there were occasional warnings about coffee being a health risk. Over the years, coffee’s been considered a cause of conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and premature death.
Actually, these concerns may have been unfounded and exaggerated. 36 However, despite various concerns that have turned up over the years, coffee is remarkably safe and has a number of important potential benefits.
A. It is considered as a health risk.
B. However, it wasn’t always this way.
C. They have the effects of anti-depression.
D. They have given the public a very abnormal view.
E. Therefore, more research is needed to confirm these findings.
F. In fact, there are many studies conducted throughout the world.
G.Their consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of diseases.
第三節(共12小題,37 ~ 40每小題0.5分,41 ~ 48每小題1分, 滿分10分)
The Search for the Northwest Passage
For hundreds of years, the search for a convenient route by water across the North American continent, from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west, inspired explorers and sailors. This was the fabled Northwest Passage. The main reason for seeking this route was that it would provide a shortcut from Europe to the established markets of Asia, especially China and Indonesia. From the fifteenth century until the Suez and Panama Canals were built many centuries later, the only way for a ship to travel from, for example, Spain to the Philippines, was via Cape Horn against ferocious winds and dangerous currents, or via the longer and still more risky Cape of Good Hope. Either way, it was a long and perilous journey.
Between the early fifteenth century and the early twentieth century, when the Northwest Passage was finally traversed entirely by sea, there were many theories regarding where such a route might be. Some believed there might be a continuous waterway across the American continent, between what is now California in the west and the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway in the east. Others believed it would be far north, above Alaska and the normally frozen Northern Canada. To locate this fabled route, expeditions set out from the eastern Atlantic and the western Pacific coasts.
The earliest journeys from the eastern coast into the wilderness of Northeast Canada were undertaken by Greenland Vikings before the thirteenth century. Further Journeys of discovery were not made in earnest until the fifteenth century, the first of which was led by Englishman John Cabot in 1497, followed by three voyages starting from 1576 led by Cabot’s fellow countryman, Martin Frobisher, after whom Frobisher Bay is named. During the following three centuries, further expeditions set out, several of which suffered great hardship due to their ships being frozen in the ice as winter set in. The most famous of these was another Englishman’s expedition, that of Sir John Franklin’s, whose ship disappeared without a trace in 1846. This led to over 25 search parties, resulting in further exploration. However, they initially had no success pushing beyond the bays and changing channels of Eastern Canada.
At the same time as English exploration was taking place in the east, on the western coast Spanish seamen were attempting to find a route from west to east. In 1539, 60 years before Frobisher’s epic journeys, a Spaniard, Francisco de Ulloa, explored California and his exploits created the myth of a passage across the continent from California. Further exploration from Spain continued for the next two centuries. During this time, Russia became involved in exploration further north, with Vitus Bering, a Dane working for Russia, locating and naming the Bering Strait, the waterway between Russia and Alaska.
The most famous of the Western navigators was Englishman Captain James Cook, who, in 1778, attempted to find the passage for a prize of 20,000 offered by the British Admiralty. Neither he nor other navigators who followed him, including compatriot George Vancouver, discovered any sign of a river that would lead eastwards, rather, they were blocked by glaciers close to the coast. They concluded that there was no passage south of the Bering Strait.
Perhaps the most impressive journey was the one that finally achieved success. In the search for Franklin, Commander Robert McClure’s expedition engaged in a remarkable journey between 1850 and 1854. His ship HMS Investigator sailed first around Cape Horn and then, after heading north, found a route from west to east through the Bering Strait and across Northern Canada. During this time his ship was trapped in ice for three winters and his crew, despite nearly dying of starvation, completed the journey across the ice in sleds, before being picked up by another ship. However, the Northwest Passage was not traversed entirely by sea until 1906 when Roald Amundsen, the great polar explorer (who was also the first to reach the South Pole), finally achieved this feat by taking the east-west route. The first successful fully marine west-east crossing was completed in 1942 by a Royal Canadian Mounted Police crew in their plucky Arctic workhorse, the converted schooner St Roch, which later made the return trip. Many other vessels have since made the voyage, including as late as 2008, the first commercial crossing.

You can visit the apartments of king William and Queen Mary. The palace kitchens are especially interesting. They are the largest in Europe. In the time of Henry the Ⅷ , 200 kitchen staff worked there to prepare two meals a day for over a thousand people. Audio guides to the palace are available from the Information Center. If you've had enough of royal apartments , you can just walk around the palace Gardens, which are huge and truly amazing. Bring your tickets with you, and they're needed to enter it. Have you still got the little brochure that comes with your ticket If you've lost it , please come and ask me for one. I still have a few here. If you feel hungry , you can have a snack in the coffee shop in the palace , next to the kitchens , or at the Tiltyard cafe in the gardens.
we'll meet again by the main entrance at 5 : 30, and our coach will take us back to the hotel for dinner. That'll be earlier than usual tonight,at 6:30, because we are having a party later, at 8 o'clock. Have a pleasant time. Thank You

"The fashionable sisters took the world by storm with their personalized wheelchair decorations.
