1.A.teacher’s B.friend’s C.father’s D.doctor’s
解析 根據下文的“Mark Hyman,a medical director,had advised the sugar detox for me”可知,醫學主任Mark Hyman建議作者戒糖。
2.A.lose B.gain C.find D.increase
解析 根據常識并結合后面的“________ a whole range of diseases from cancer to heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease”可知,該處指醫生建議作者戒糖以減掉內臟的脂肪。

3.A.helps B.affects C.heals D.damages
4.A.remove B.add C.dismiss D.save
解析 根據后面的“because fat makes you feel full and speeds your metabolism(新陳代謝)”并結合前面的unexpectedly和常識可知,此處指出乎意料的是Hyman建議作者增加更多的脂肪。
5.A.hardly B.rarely C.actually D.nearly

6.A.supporting B.destroying C.harming D.defending
解析 根據上文的unexpectedly并結合空后的“many of the myths I’d grown up with”可知,該處指這打破了作者從小至今的許多錯誤認識。
7.A.upsetting B.inspiring C.successful D.fascinating
解析 根據空前的“For the first several days, frankly”并結合空后的“Making certain foods ________ made me want them more”可知,作者最開始幾天的戒糖過程是令人苦惱的。

8.A.wasted B.hidden C.consumed D.forbidden
9.A.fair B.small C.proper D.modest

10.A.boss B.loser C.actor D.beggar
解析 上文中的“My desire for sugar was intense and seemed never-ending”表明,作者對糖的渴望非常強烈而且似乎永無止境;下文中的“I was easy to get annoyed and moody.”

11.A.interest B.passion C.desire D.curiosity
12.A.met B.hit C.knew D.found

13.A.varied B.increased C.reduced D.disappeared
14.A.flexible B.rigid C.strict D.serious

15.A.include B.avoid C.neglect D.escape

A
For three days, the doctor didn’t get a single patient. Then on the fourth day,a woman opened the door to his office, saw him—and ran away.
“I had to run after her, saying I can help her with the problem,”said Diarra Boubacar. The 53-year-old still has a good laugh when he talks about his experience working as a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) at a private hospital in Chengdu,Sichuan Province.
“If my approach is not effective,I will not take any money from you,” he promised the woman. The woman finally accepted his treatment and felt better.“She started bringing her parents and her husband, and they all became my patients.”
Born in the African country of Mali,Boubacar first came to China in 1984 on a student exchange programme majoring in Chinese language and culture at Beijing Language and Culture University. After the course,he studied TCM at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine.
Since TCM is also related to Chinese history and culture, students have to study ancient Chinese literature as most of the medical texts were written in ancient Chinese characters.“That’s a subject even the Chinese find difficult; so think of me,a foreigner!” he said.
However, the greatest challenge for him was to convince people that even though he was a foreigner,he could still treat them effectively with TCM.
Besides his work in the community,Boubacar is also known as the “African Norman Bethune”.Doctor Bethune was a Canadian frontline doctor who ran mobile hospital in north China in the 1930s.
“I want to build not only a hospital but also an educational centre where people can come and learn about Chinese medicine,” Boubacar said.
He plans to build a hospital with an educational centre where people can learn TCM in Africa.“If they learn TCM,they will be able to treat people in Africa in a very cheap and effective way.”

Grandparents who help out occasionally with childcare or provide support for others in their community tend to live longer than seniors who do not care for other people, according to a study from Berlin,Germany.
“Having no contact with grandchildren at all can negatively impact grandparents’ health,” said Sonja Hilbrand, one of the researchers. The findings are drawn from data on more than 500 people over age 70 in the Berlin Aging Study. The study team compared this group with those who provided support for non-family members, such as neighbors, and seniors who did not provide any care for other people.Overall, after accounting for grandparents’ age and general state of health, the risk of dying over a 20-year period was one-third lower for grandparents who cared for their grandchildren, compared with grandparents who provided no childcare.
Caregiving was associated with a longer life even when the care receiver wasn’t a relative.Half of the grandparents who cared for grandchildren were still alive ten years after the initial interview. In contrast, about half of the participants who did not help others died within five years after the start of the study.
“Caregiving may give caregivers a purpose of life because they may feel useful for others and society.Caregiving may be thought also as an activity that keeps caregivers physically and mentally active,” said Professor Bruno Arpino, adding that caregiving is not the only activity that can improve old people’s health, and too many caring responsibilities can take away from other beneficial activities like working, being in social clubs,or volunteering.“Children should take into account their parents’ needs, willingness, and desires and agree with them on the timing and amount of childcare,” he suggested.

3.A [空處承接上一句“Our dependence on phones reduces our opportunities for face-to-face communication.”,應該會講到這么做的具體危害,故A項符合語境。
4.F [根據空后的“On the contrary”可知,空處緊跟上文,結合上文中的“They may include learning,playing sports,going sightseeing and so on.”

Two British teachers have broken the world record for the longest journey in a tuk-tuk after pulling their failing vehicle for 43 miles.Richard Sears and Nick Gough travelled 37,500 kilometers around the world and passed through 37 countries. They did this to support grassroots education project in Africa,Asia and South America.
The pair, who set off from London, thought their expedition was over when the vehicle started to fail. When the tuk-tuk broke, they were only 70 kilometers from their destination. They decided to pull it the rest of the way.The tuk-tuk,which weighs 800 kilograms, was pulled in turns by Richard and Nick over three days.On arrival in Chepen,Peru, they discovered a mechanic who specialized in tuk-tuks and managed to fix it.
The pair were back on the road and aiming for their next goal.Along their journey they had to tackle deserts and jungles. They also survived close encounters with elephants in Uganda and Botswana and an accident in Malaysia. The greatest hardship on the tuk-tuk was the mountain ranges lying in their path, including the Alps, the Himalayas and the Andes.
Nick and Richard uncovered some inspirational projects across Africa,Asia and South America. They witnessed firsthand the educational challenges facing these areas today. They joined street children in the slums of Cairo,Khartoum,Kampala,Mumbai and Phnom Penh. They visited Congolese refugees (難民) in camps in Eastern Burundi. They witnessed how education could free victims of human trafficking in Nepal.
The pair established the Tuk-Tuk Educational Trust,a U.K.registered charity.
Talking about their motivation,Richard said,“The world’s leaders have made a commitment to achieving universal primary education but in spite of this pledge (誓言,承諾),over 57 million primary-aged children worldwide are still out of school;many more are in school, though still cannot access quality learning opportunities.”

Have you ever heard about Black Friday and Cyber Monday?Surely, they are all about finding the best deals on holiday gifts for yourself and family members. And have you heard about GivingTuesday? Here is something about it!
GivingTuesday is observed annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, which encourages people to help those in need by making financial donations or doing good in their local community. The “Global Day of Giving” was started in 2012 by New York City non-profit 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation.
Unlike Black Friday,GivingTuesday serves a more altruistic purpose. In its first year, the movement brought in almost $10 million for charities, and things have only improved since. In 2019,many GivingTuesday social media campaigns worldwide helped raise an amazing $1.9 billion from 27 million donors!Over the past five years, many higher education institutions have also been using the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to ask alumni(畢業生) for donations. In 2019,the University of Michigan, which calls it Blueday, received 5,887 gifts totaling over $4 million, while Pennsylvania State University raised $710,000 to benefit over 85 university programs.
Though donating money certainly helps, there are many other ways to support the great cause, especially during the pandemic. You can tutor kids struggling with online learning,or team up with an adult to get groceries or medications for an elderly neighbor.Alternatively, call on your peers(同齡人) to help you with a service project that addresses an issue close to your heart,or pick one from the several ideas suggested on the GivingTuesday website. You can also donate your gently-used clothes and toys to local shelters,or mail a handwritten note to a grandparent or a friend you miss seeing.

When international aid is given, steps must be taken to ensure that the aid reaches the people for whom it is intended. The way to achieve this may not be simple.Perhaps the UNO could set up a body of devoted men and women in every country who can speedily distribute aid to victims of floods and earthquakes.
More than the help that one nation can give to another during a disaster,it would be more effective to give other forms of help during normal times.A common proverb says,“Give me a fish and I eat for a day;teach me to fish and I eat for a lifetime.” If we follow this wise saying,it would be right to teach people from less developed nations to take care of themselves. For example,a country could share its technology with another. This could be in simple areas like agriculture or in more complex areas like medical and health care or even in building satellites.Even a small country is able to help less developed nations.
Sometimes what is taken for granted, like the setting up of a water purification plant or the administration of a school, could be useful for countries which are looking about to solve common problems.Exchange students could be attached for a number of months or years and learn the required craft while on the site. They can then take their knowledge back to their homelands.Such aid will be truly helpful and there is no chance of it being temporary or of it falling into the wrong hands.
Many countries run extensive courses in all sorts of skills. It will not cost much to include deserving foreigners in these courses.Besides giving effective help to the countries concerned, there is also the build-up of friendships to consider.Giving direct help by giving materials may be effective in the short run. However,in the long run what is really effective would be the sharing of knowledge.
1.According to the author, how could international aid reach the victims in time
A.By solving the cost problems.
B.By solving the transportation problems.
C.By setting up a body of devoted people in every country.
D.By relying on the direct distribution of the UNO.
從文章第一段最后一句“Perhaps the UNO could set up a body of devoted men and women in every country who can speedily distribute aid to victims of floods and earthquakes.”

2.What does the author try to express in the underlined sentence
A.Providing food is vital.
B.Learning to fish is helpful.
C.Teaching skills is essential.
D.Looking after others is important.
“Give me a fish and I eat for a day;teach me to fish and I eat for a lifetime.”

3.Which aid is likely to fall into the wrong hands
A.A medical team.
B.An exchange program.
C.A water plant.
D.Financial support.
段末提到這些援助方式都不會“fall into the wrong hands”。

4.What can we infer about international aid from the passage
A.It is facing difficulties.
B.It is unnecessary during normal times.
C.It should be given in the form of materials.
D.It has gained support from developed countries.
文章開頭“When international aid is given...it is intended.”提出問題、第二段首句“More than the help...give other forms of help during normal times.”以及第三段首句“Many countries run extensive courses in all sorts of skills.”

Ⅱ.七選五
Imagine that you’re rock climbing and you really want to reach the top.And you know you can get to the top. However, you’re having a hard time getting there because all you can do is to look at the ground below you.__1__ In fact, you are so focused that you don’t have time to look up and move upward.
I don’t rock climb. However, recently I have been reflecting on how in so many areas of my life,I easily think about the vision and rarely think about what failure looks like.__2__ But sometimes I’m so obsessed with looking down that I just try not to get worse, rather than really finding ways to improve.__3__ So in the coming year I’m going to quit looking down, stop fearing sliding back and focus completely on moving forward.
Maybe you’re so focused on not going broke(破產的) that you’re not putting energy into creating wealth.Maybe you’re so fearful of not failing in the exam that you’re not taking action to change the situation.Maybe you can’t stand the thought of being unemployed,so you never take the risk to fully love your work.__4__
Take a moment to think about where you’re stuck in the middle because you don’t want to “go down”.Take those times and reframe the way you think of those things in your life.__5__
A.As a result,I get stuck there.
B.I move toward that vision with ease.
C.Live for love,abundance,joy,and wellness.
D.I don’t have the time or energy to get better.
