have a very comfortable life there!
Prepare yourself
Get to know the school. This may take time and effort, but
checking out the school website, photo galleries, and reviews
might give you an insight (洞悉) into how life at your new
school is.
Expect to be nervous and uncertain. However, don't think that
this change in attitude is lasting. Obviously, you aren't going to
be yourself the first couple of days, especially if you aren't used
to being the “quiet one”. This quiet feeling will not last.
Start off well
Arrive early. On your first day at your new school, try to arrive
early so that you can “blend in (融入)”. Arriving early will
give you the chance to socialize with people already at school.
This can help to make you look as if you're already “in the
know”.
Introduce yourself. Although it may seem awkward, this is the
way to get things rolling. Start to talk about the smallest things
and especially about the other person. By doing this, you'll be
right on track in a week or two (maybe less than a week). Smil-
ing and saying “Hi” can help others realize that your quiet-
ness is shyness, not snootiness (傲慢).
Connect. Find people you have things in common with. Be on
the lookout for long-term friends, not just people who are looking
to be nice to you. Get to know people and share things about
yourself. It may seem scary, but it's definitely worth a shot.
Get involved
Join a club. Most schools have a list of extra-curricular activities
you can choose from. In almost all schools, being on a sports
team is considered “cool”.
Be a good student. It would be awesome if you were in the social
scene, known, and outgoing, as well as loved by your teachers.
However, for this to come, work hardest on your studies while
still maintaining that social balance.
Don't sweat it. Fitting in is a piece of cake for some and a chal-
lenge for others. The important thing is to take it easy, and to
act like yourself. If you do, you'll have friends who like you for
who you are in no time.

Students at West Side Elementary in California,
the US created a free hotline. It was put together
with the help of teachers Jessica Martin and
Asherah Weiss. People can call it to get cheerful advice from kids during difficult times. In just days, the hotline began getting thous-ands of calls an hour.
The hotline is available in English and Spanish. It offers happy
voices of children sharing positive (積極的) messages. If you
are feeling mad or nervous, press 1 and you can get helpful ad-
vice like “go get a cookie”. If you need words of encour-

sages like “The world is a better place with you in it!” Press-

things like “Be happy” and “We love you!”.
