In the 1950s, a female swimming athlete set a goal for her-
self. 8 If she could make it, she would be the first person
in the world that did it.
On that day, she jumped into the sea without any hesitation(猶
豫) and swam towards the opposite bank. 9 Though she was
very tired, she carried on swimming.
But in the end, she gave up. And what she didn’t know the
moment she gave up was that the opposite bank was only one mile
away.
10 And she said, “The reason why I gave up is that I
could not see the destination (目的地) which I was so close
to.”
Too many success stories have told us about courage and per-
sistence (堅持). 11 You can have courage only when you
know where your goal is. You can manage to persist only when
you know where your goal is, and prepare yourself well men-
tally(精神上).
Courage and persistence never fall from the sky. They come
from weighing between input and output.

Enjoying the beauty of the sky at night is a rare thing for peo-
ple in cities since light pollution ruins everything. However, pho-
tos taken by astrophotographers(天文攝影師) give people oppor-
tunities to admire the stars.
Being a full-time astrophotographer, Zhang Jingyi, 27, grew
up being an astronomy enthusiast(愛好者). When being asked
why she chose this career, Zhang said, “We all dream of what
it is like to live on planets so far from us. Isn’t it cool ”
As a result of the fast development of China’s space industry,
Zhang started to shoot(拍攝) rocket launching(發射) moments
in recent years.“I basically followed the construction of the
Tiangong space station with my camera,” she said, adding that
every launch has given her a strong sense of achievement.
Zhang believes that her photos are artworks that money cannot
buy. “Some photographers may sell their works—some pho-
tos even reach six digits(六位數字),” Zhang said. “For me, I wou-
ld be satisfied if people simply like my work.” As an in-
fluencer, Zhang also shares videos that she’s filmed, giving her
audience a more authentic(真實的) impression of her work.
Zhang said that astrophotographers need to be devoted to their
career. For example, when taking photos of the stars, they have
to film them on plateaus(高原) which are freezing at night. “The-
se hardships are nothing if you truly love what you do,” Zhang said.

For many Chinese people, the Lantern Festival, which fell on Feb.15, 2022, marked an end to two weeks of the Lunar (陰歷
的) New Year. For the folk artist Wang De, it was also the bus-
iest, best time for him to show his craft (手藝) creating molten
(熔化的) iron fireworks.
Wang, who is a blacksmith(鐵匠) of the art of dashuhua, wh-ich means “creating tree flowers” and has a history of
over 500 years, lives in Yu County in the city of Zhangjiakou,
North China’s Hebei Province.
To create molten iron fireworks, scrap iron (鐵屑) is melted
to 1,600℃ and thrown against a cold wall to give blinding effect.
Wang and his assistants put on over a dozen dashuhua shows
for local people and tourists as part of the Spring Festival activ-
ities each year. The folk artist hopes the tradition can bring more
visitors to his hometown of Zhangjiakou, which caught internat-
onal attention.
Dashuhua is a traditional form of fireworks show that takes
place during certain festivals. In ancient times, this was a show
that only those people with wealth and high social positions
could afford. There are only several people left in China who
have mastered (掌握) the ancient practice, and they are not
young.
Because of the risk of the show, it’s easy for dashuhua artists
to get hurt when they are giving shows. And the high-risk tradition is still only kept for the brave. During a show a few years
ago, Wang got serious burns on his leg and it took two months
to recover (恢復).
Both Wang’s father and grandfather were blacksmiths. “I
learned the craft from my father. When I was young, I thought it
was exciting. But years later I also felt it was my duty(責任) to
pass it on to the next generation(代),” he says.

A
Larry seemed always silent and didn’t have any friends. His
teacher Mr. Brown noticed this. One day, he asked Larry to
meet him after class. Mr. Brown said, “I see that you don’t
talk to anyone or show any interest in anything. What’s
wrong ” Larry replied, “Sir, I have a very difficult life. I
have to face some very sad things and I keep thinking about
them. Because of this, I can’t focus my attention on anything
and don’t even feel like talking to anybody. ”
Mr. Brown listened carefully, thought for a while and said,
“Would you like some lemonade(檸檬汽水) ” Larry felt a
little surprised and nervously replied, “Yes, thank you!”
While preparing lemonade, Mr. Brown added more salt(鹽) on purpose and kept the quantity of sugar low. Larry made a
strange face as soon as he drank a sip of that lemonade. Seeing
this, Mr. Brown asked, “You don’t like it ” “Um...it’s just
there is a bit too much salt in it,” Larry answered. Mr. Brown
stopped him, “Oh, it doesn’t matter. I will throw it away.”As
the teacher was lifting the glass to take it away, Larry stopped
him and said, “Sir, please don’t throw it away. If we put a little
more sugar in the lemonade, it will be better.”
Hearing this, Mr. Brown said happily, “This is what I want
to hear from you. To improve the taste of lemonade, we don’t
need to remove the salt from it. We can just add some sugar to
it. Similarly, we cannot remove sad things that have already happ-
ened to us, but we can add good experiences to our life. If
you keep on crying about your past, neither your present will be
right nor the future will be bright.”
Larry realized his problem and promised to live a positive(積極的) life.
21.What can we know about Larry
A.He was a top student.
B.He was a shy boy.
C.He experienced bad things all the time.
D.He always felt sad.
D
Sir, I have a
very difficult life. I have to face some very sad things and I
keep thinking about them.”
22.Why did Mr. Brown add more salt to lemonade on purpose
A.He didn’t like too much sugar.
B.He hoped to help Larry express true ideas.
C.He wanted to make lemonade different.
D.He wanted to invite Larry to try it.
B
23.We can add to make our life happy instead of remov-
ing something from the life.
A.sweet things B.more time
C.sad things D.more money
A
根據第四段中的“but we can add good
experiences to our life”可知,我們可以給生活增加美好的經
歷。故選A。
Which of the following shows the
changes in Larry’s feelings
A.shy→relaxed→nervous→happy
B.nervous→happy→shy→relaxed
C.relaxed→nervous→shy→happy
D.shy→nervous→relaxed→happy
D
Larry seemed always
silent and didn’t have any friends.”
little surprised and nervously replied”可知,拉里有一點緊張,
對應nervous;根據第三段中的“As the teacher...Larry stopped
him and said, ‘Sir, please don’t throw it away. If we put a lit-
tle more sugar in the lemonade, it will be better.”
realized his problem and promised to live a positive life.”
是shy→nervous→relaxed→happy。故選D。
25.What can we learn from the text
A.We can improve the taste of the lemonade by adding more salt.
B.We can live a happier life if we see things from the bright side.
C.If we stop thinking about the sad incidents, difficulties will
not go into our life.
D.If we can’t remove the bad things in our life, we won’t be happy.
B

According to scientists’ research(研究), the month in which
babies are born could affect(影響) them in some ways.
Babies born in spring get sick easily. Children born under
Aquarius(水瓶座) (Jan.21st-Feb.19th) may be less clever than
those born in other seasons. They may also have shorter lives
than those born in autumn. Scientists believe many of the differ-
ences can be explained by the mother’s exposure to sunlight in
pregnancy(懷孕). Sunlight helps lead to the production of vitamin(維生素) D in the body. The lack(缺乏) of vitamin D in the first months of life may have a bad effect(影響) on health.
Vitamin D is called the “sunshine vitamin”. It has a good ef-
fect on health.A study showed that people born from April to
June had slightly shorter lives than those born in October,
November or December. Similar studies in the US showed that
people born in autumn lived about 160 days longer than those
born in spring.
Professor Russell Foster said the conclusions(結論) were sur-
prising and interesting. He added, “These are small effects but
they are very, very clear. I am not giving voice to star signs and th-ey are just for fun. But it is true that we are affected by our season of birth.”
26.A child’s season of birth can affect all the following things
EXCEPT according to the first two paragraphs.
A.his health
B.his height
C.his length of life
D.his quality of being clever
B
What does the underlined word “ex-
posure” mean in Chinese
根據下句“Sunlight helps lead to the production of vitamin D in the body.”
28.What can we know about vitamin D according to the passage
A.It comes from sunlight.
B.It helps people live longer.
C.Sunlight prevents its production.
D.It does harm to people’s health.
根據原文中“Vitamin D is called the ‘sunshine vitamin’. It has a good effect on health.”
B
29.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.Women should get enough sunlight in pregnancy.
B.Children born under Aquarius are cleverer than those born in
autumn.

IV.
Remember when you were a little child trying to learn to walk
First, you had to learn how to balance yourself and stand. You
fell down, and then got up.You laughed sometimes and cried at
other times. After much practice, you finally learned how to
balance yourself. You got much pleasure from this new feeling
of power—you’d stood everywhere you could. It was a happy
time—you did it!
Now, the next step—walking. You’d seen others do it. It didn’t
look that hard—just move your legs while you were standing.
Wrong—more difficult than you ever imagined. But after you
tried again and again, you understood how to walk.
If people around you found you walking, they cheered, “Oh,
look at what the kid is doing.” This encouraged you! But look
back on those days when you were the little child—how many
times did you try when no one was watching, or when no one
was cheering You couldn’t wait for someone to encourage you
to take the next steps. You learned how to encourage yourself.
So, keep trying and encouraging yourself as you learned to
walk if you want to succeed in doing something.
