A
Compared with the obvious environmental issues we hear about every day, littering often takes a backseat—but it’s more pressing than we may think.
Some may say that a banana peel out of your car along the motorway would be a harmless action.Actually, they are wrong.A banana peel can take up to two years to decompose (分解),and with a third of motorists admitting to littering while driving, that’s a whole lot of discarded banana peels,or much worse. An orange peel and a cigarette butt has a similar biodegrading (生物降解) term to that of a banana, but tin and aluminium cans last up to 100 years, and plastic bottles last forever,so do glass bottles and plastic bags.
Despite the fact that longer-lasting materials will serve to damage the environment and its animals for longer,we can’t only measure the severity of a certain type of rubbish by its lifetime. For example, despite having a fairly short biodegrading span, more than 120 tons of cigarette-related litter is thrown away in the UK every day.Similarly, our regular littering here and there has caused the UK’s mouse population to increase by 60 million. This suddenly isn’t so mysterious when you consider that since the 1960s our annual littering has increased by an amazing 500 per cent.
It’s not a cheap habit either:UK taxpayers spent £500 million on keeping the streets clean. So,it’s not surprising that if caught fly-tipping,you could face a £20,000 fine.Regardless of how severe the punishment might seem, however, among the reported cases only 2,000 were punished out of 825,000,so we still have some way to go in making sure people observe the rules.
To take back our beautiful cities,we need to do more than simply not leaving rubbish where it ought not to be.We need to care more about the world around us.
1.Which of the following is easiest to decompose comparatively
A.An orange peel. B.A plastic bag.
C.An aluminium can. D.A glass bottle.
根據第二段中“An orange peel and a cigarette butt has...so do glass bottles and plastic bags.”

2.What can we know from Paragraph 3
A.Annual littering has increased a little in UK since the 1960s.
B.Shorter-lasting materials will be less harmful to the environment.
C.Cigarette-related litter is a severe environmental problem in UK.
D.Regular littering has caused the UK’s mouse population to reach 60 million.
根據第三段中的“Despite the fact that longer-lasting materials will serve...is thrown away in the UK every day.”

3.Which of the following can best describe UK’s punishment on littering according to Paragraph 4
A.Every little helps.
B.A drop in the bucket.
C.No pains,no gains.
D.More haste,less speed.
根據第四段中的“Regardless of how severe the punishment might seem...in making sure people observe the rules.”

4.What is the best title of the passage
A.Rubbish collection,an urgent task.
B.Environment issue,a big concern.
C.Littering,a surprisingly big issue.
D.Long-lasting materials,a hidden danger.

B
Skeptics are strange a lot. Some of them refuse to admit the serious threat of human activities to the environment and they are tired of people who disagree with them. Those people, say skeptics, spread nothing but bad news about the environment. The “eco-guilt” brought on by the discouraging news about our planet gives rise to the popularity of skeptics as people search for more comforting world views.
Perhaps that explains why a new book by Bjorn Lomborg received so much publicity. That book,The Skeptical Environmentalist, declares that it measures the “real state of the world” as fine.Of course, another explanation is the deep pockets of some big businesses with special interests.Indeed,Mr Lomborg’s views are similar to those of some industry-funded organizations, which start huge activities through the media to confuse the public about issues like global warming.
So it was strange to see Mr Lomborg’s book go largely unchallenged in the media though his beliefs were contrary to most scientific opinions. One national newspaper in Canada ran a number of articles and reviews full of words of praise, even with the conclusion that “After Lomborg, the environmental movement will begin to die down.”
Such one-sided views should have immediately been challenged. But only a different review appeared in Nature,a respected science magazine with specific readership. The review remarked that Mr Lomborg’s “preference for unexamined materials is incredible”.
A critical eye is valuable, and the media should present information in such a way that could allow people to make informed decisions.Unfortunately, that is often inaccessible as blocked by the desire to be shocking or to defend some special interest.People might become half-blind before a world partially exhibited by the media. That’s a shame, because matters concerning the health of the planet are far too important to be treated lightly.
5.According to the passage, which of the following may be regarded as “skeptics”?
A.People who agree on the popularity of “eco-guilt”.
B.People who dislike the harmful effect of human activities.
C.People who disbelieve the serious situation of our planet.
D.People who spread comforting news to protect our environment.
根據第一段中的“Some of them refuse to admit...who disagree with them.”

6.Which of the following can be a reason for the popularity of Lomborg’s book
A.The book challenges views about the fine state of the world.
B.Some big businesses intend to protect their own interests.
C.The author convinces people to speak comforting worldviews.
D.Industry-funded media presents confusing information.
根據第二段中的“Indeed,Mr Lomborg’s views are similar to...like global warming.”

7.The author mentioned the review in Nature in order to ________.
A.find fault with Lomborg’s book
B.voice a different opinion
C.challenge the authority of the media
D.point out the value of scientific views

8.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage
A.To show the importance of presenting overall information by the media.
B.To warn the public of the danger of half-blindness with reviews.
C.To blame the media’s lack of responsibility in information.
D.To encourage the skeptics to have a critical eye.
根據全文內容尤其是最后一段中的“A critical eye is valuable...to make informed decisions.”

Ⅱ.七選五
A future where insects make up a large part of the world’s diet is on the horizon.Despite the unpleasant nature of such cuisine, insects have been considered a delicacy in some parts of world for centuries.Their being low-fat and high-protein makes them a perfect choice for reducing hunger.__1__
Animal protein from livestock (家畜),such as cows, chickens and pigs, takes up 80 percent of the entire world’s farmland, despite only making up less than one-fifth of calories consumed globally.__2__ Thus it would support a variety of biodiversity as nature intended.
Insects such as grasshoppers, mealworms and crickets are packed full of protein with much higher vitamin levels than pork or beef.__3__ Greenhouse gas emissions through this process are also very little, with insect waste making excellent fertilizer (肥料) for agricultural soil.
It seems that insects are an ideal solution to many issues the world today is faced with.__4__ Urban areas of Asia,Europe and North America are most likely to associate insects with dirt instead of as a tasty meal.
Times are changing. The European Union last year declared that mealworms were safe for human consumption.Cricket protein powder is also increasing greatly in popularity, with Canada rapidly becoming the largest market for the product.
__5__ As we explore our solar system, efficient means of producing animal-based proteins will become vital.None are more efficient space-wise than insects. And the colonies of the future could well find themselves enjoying fried crickets with a pint of beer while watching the Martian sunset.
A.They also have a host of environmental benefits.
B.Insects reproduce quickly and have high growth rates.
C.Unlike agriculture, insects produce far fewer greenhouse gases.
D.They require little space, water and technology to raise compared to livestock.
E.However, making them a delicious cuisine can be a challenge in several cultures.
F.By freeing up livestock space, huge expanses of land could be returned to nature.
G.A future where insects will become invaluable to space exploration is also upcoming.

What’s Really Green
Most of us are aware that we must take care of the environment, and the majority of us take steps to save energy, and reduce waste and pollution. But recently, some“green truths” have been shown to be only half true,or even completely false.__1__
Paper shopping bags are better than plastic ones.
Plastic bags cause litter and are a danger to wild animals, which mistake them for food.It takes hundreds of years for plastic to break down, but much less time for paper.Because of this, people think paper bags are the better environmental choice.
However, making a paper bag uses four times as much energy as making a plastic bag and up to three times the amount of water.__2__ In fact, both kinds of bags are bad for the environment. So,take a reusable bag with you when you go shopping.
__3__
It seems like common sense:eating local food should be better for the environment, because it does not need to be transported long distances and kept cold during transport.__4__ It is the production of food, not its transport, that uses most of the energy and produces most of the greenhouse gases. In some cases, local food might have used more energy and produced more greenhouse gases than food grown a long way away, even taking into account its transport.
It’s better to take a shower than a bath.
__5__ If you spend more than eight minutes in a shower, you’ll use as much water as in a bath—about 50 litres of water. Therefore, the key is to keep your shower time as short as possible.
Environmental awareness is now part of daily life. But it’s worth checking common ideas and opinions to see what’s really green.
A.So say no to plastic bags.
B.Here are some common ones.
C.Unfortunately,it is not that simple.
D.Eating local food is good for the environment.
E.The process also produces more greenhouse gases.
F.It’s time that we should take some measures to protect our environment.
G.It depends on how long you spend in the shower and how large your bath is.
3.D [設空句為該部分標題句,根據后文“It seems like common sense:eating local food should be better for the environment,because...”

UNIT 3 ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
A
Clover,a three-year-old spirit bear, lives at the B.C. Wildlife Park near Kamloops,British Columbia,Canada. He lost his parents two years ago and was raised at a wildlife center. When he was set free into the wild,he broke into human camps looking for food.Wildlife experts (專家) tried to get him used to living on his own,but he continued to look for places where there were people. Finally the experts decided that he could not live in the wild.Since then,a total of $750,000 has been collected to create a habitat for Clover.
The habitat covers about three acres (英畝) of land and includes natural forest, two ponds connected by a small river and something else.It will add a platform and a walkway later this year so that people can see Clover and his habitat more closely. There will also be a center where people can learn more about spirit bears.Besides,a black bear will be moved into the habitat so Clover will not feel lonely.
Spirit bears are also called Kermode bears after Francis Kermode, who first studied them.Kermode discovered that a small number of black bears carry a gene (基因) for white fur.If a baby bear receives one of these genes from each parent, its fur will be a creamy white color. There are about 1,200 bears who carry the gene for white fur,but only about 200 white Kermode bears in the world.Kermode bears are found only in British Columbia. They live in the Great Bear Rainforest,an area that covers the mainland and islands along the coast of B.C.between Vancouver and Alaska.

The Department of Energy(DOE) is dealing with a tough research problem that has troubled experts for more than a decade:developing a low-cost alternative to the present jet fuel.
The search began around 2010,originally pushed by the concerns about the country’s reliance on imported oil.More recently, airlines have raised the question themselves. There are potential restrictions on the amount of carbon dioxide from jet airliners and a lack of an electricity-fueled replacement for their heavy planes.
Researchers at DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory(NREL) are taking a fresh look at a promising family of new and plentiful raw materials:food wastes and urban used water containing human manure (糞肥).
“Everyone is beginning to see the potential of taking these organic materials that we normally have sent to landfills or wastewater treatment plants,” said Derek Vardon,a senior research engineer at NREL.Manure and food wastes contain fatty acids that can be changed to link their chain-like structures together. The result is a liquid fuel,Vardon explained, one that has seven times the energy of methane—the major component of natural gas. That’s needed to get a heavy airliner off the ground.
Other researchers are also sensing the potential of rich and low-carbon resources that could be developed by working with wastewater treatment plants. One of them is Jianping Yu,the main researcher of a separate NREL project that is exploring how to remove major and troublesome water pollutants from conventional wastewater treatment processes. His idea is to feed the pollutants to algae (海藻) in the wastewater plants and then sell the algae as a product that can be made into commercial fertilizers (肥料).Yu’s idea is to collect and develop special algae,so they can remove as much as 50% of the pollutants
from processed wastewater.Growing more powerful algae,he points out, will also be a way to remove more CO2 from the air.The outcome is that it could reduce the amount of energy needed to run wastewater plants.“That’s the goal. Our main motivation is future environmental requirements,” Yu said.

Greenhouse farming is carried out using greenhouses. These allow farmers to grow many different kinds of crops in climates that may not be hospitable. The development of greenhouse farming techniques has generally resulted in more overall food for the whole world.__1__.It’s also been helpful in allowing people to buy almost any fruit or vegetable at their local grocers, regardless of whether the food is out of season.
__2__.Farmers can create their greenhouses using materials that maximize the heat from the sun. Some farmers may also include heaters inside the greenhouses, which can be helpful in very cold climates.Other aspects of environmental controls, including careful adjustment of humidity (濕度),are also often useful.
Another big plus for greenhouse farming is that it allows people to take advantage of vertical space. Many farmers will have plants sitting in shelves or hanging from the ceilings.__3__.
It’s very common for greenhouse farmers to use a technique called hydroponics (溶液栽培).This involves growing plants hung in liquid.Sometimes this liquid is simply water.__4__.This often allows plants to grow larger and more rapidly than they normally would, and it lets farmers maximize efficiency.
__5__.When farmers plant outdoors, they only require the money for seed, labor, and whatever additional costs associated with equipment or land.Greenhouse farming introduces a whole new set of expenses related to buildings and maintenance of those buildings.Farmers who have to artificially heat the inside of their greenhouses generally have even greater costs to deal with.
