Emma stared(凝視) sadly out the window of the bus. Only 50
miles outside town was the farm. She thought about the farm all
the time, especially the animals.
When her family sold the farm and moved to the nearby town,
Emma was excited. But when she got to the new school, she

sent. The bus came to a stop. “Welcome to the Leinweber Nature Center,” her teacher said. “A guide will give us a presentation on animals, and then you'll help to feed the baby squirrels. Now, I want everyone to find a partner.”

Emma got close to Julia, a talkative and outgoing girl. “Could I be your partner ” Emma asked uncertainly.

Together, the girls walked into the center. After the presenta-
tion, a keeper showed them how to hold the bottle of milk for
the baby squirrels. Then the girls started to feed their own baby
squirrels.
After the baby squirrels finished eating, the keeper asked,
“Would you like to help feed the adult squirrels, too ”
Emma was quick to volunteer, but when the keeper opened the
first cage, the squirrel inside jumped out. Emma remained calm
(鎮靜的), held out her hand, made quiet sounds, and then
quickly got it.
“Wow!” Julia said. “You’re always so quiet. I thought you
were afraid of everything, but you were brave.”
“I know that when animals are frightened or excited, you have to stay calm.”

you be interested in volunteering to help out with the animals at
the center ”

Emma was excited.

Last summer, I had a chance to visit Beijing with my family. It was a city with a long history, and there were so many interest-
ing places to see!
One of the most exciting places we went to was the Great Wall. We walked along a short part of it called Badaling. Even
though it was very crowded, the view from the top was amazing.
Another place that was really beautiful was the Summer Pala-ce. It was a big park with a lake, gardens, and traditional build-
ings. My favorite part was riding a boat on the lake. The water
was so clear, and we could see fish swimming in it.
We also ate some delicious food in Beijing. My favorite was
the Peking duck. It was cooked perfectly with crispy skin and
was served with a special kind of pancake. We learned how to
wrap the duck in the pancake with vegetables and a sauce. It
was so yummy!
Shopping in Beijing was also fun. We went to a big market at
Wukesong. We bought lots of souvenirs(紀念品) there. I got
some cool Chinese knots(中國結) and a fan with a beautiful
painting on it.
This trip was truly a fantastic experience for me. I learned a lot
about Chinese history, tried delicious new foods, and had a
great time with my family.

In 1974, the discovery of the Terracotta Warriors and Horses
surprised the world. They are in Xi’an City of Shaanxi
Province, which used to be an important city of the Qin Dy-
nasty. Although they are over 2,000 years old, they still look
amazing. The year 2024 is the 50th anniversary(周年) of the
discovery of this great wonder. It's time to dig deeper into the
underground world!
How many terracotta warriors and horses are there
So far, nearly 8,000 terracotta warriors and horses have been
found in three pits(坑), including more than 6,000 in Pit 1, over
1,300 in Pit 2, and 72 in Pit 3.
The archaeologists(考古學家) only dug out some of them. A
large number of them are still under the ground. The archaeolo-
gists are waiting for better technologies to keep what the terra-
cotta warriors and horses looked like. Once they are dug out,
they may lose their beauty because of the air and the environ-
ment.
Why were the Terracotta Warriors and Horses built
In the past, many Chinese people believed they could take
things to another world after death. So did Emperor Qinshi-
huang. He wanted to keep his excellent life after death. He
hoped his army could protect and fight for him forever. So he
built the Terracotta Warriors and Horses.
