this “energy” reaches a certain level, real 2 are planted
in deserts by some organizations and companies in China! It
seems that our country’s effort, along with India’s, has made a
 3 world.
A 4 by NASA in February, 2019, showed that China and
India had made the Earth greener over the past two years. Since
2000, the Earth’s green leaf area has 5 by over 5 million
square kilometers. That’s almost as 6 as the Amazon
rainforest! NASA said this is 7 due to big tree-planting
programs in both countries.
“China and India cover only 9% of the planet’s land area
in vegetation (植被), 8 they did one third of the increased
greening of the whole world,” said Chi Chen, the study’s lead
author and a researcher at Boston University. China was the
9 contributor (貢獻(xiàn)者), adding 25% of the increase, while
India added 6.8%.
10 the past years, China has done a great job of greening
the land. Since 1978, China has had a national forestation (植樹
造林) project 11 as the “green Great Wall”. Trees have
been 12 in thirteen provinces in northern China to act as
windbreaks (防風(fēng)林).
With China’s success in forestation, the United Nations
Environment Programme 13 China is a good example for
others to follow. “China is one of the most 14 countries in
greening the desert. It also has 15 to share with the world,”
said the former UNEP Executive Director Erik Solheim.

Have you ever seen animals returning home after a long journey How do they make it Scientific research shows that they are born
with certain unusual abilities to tell direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 meters and bring food home.
These ants live in the open desert, so they have nothing that can
guide them along the way. It’s like someone walking 6,000 meters through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell
even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some
sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell
map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth’s magnetic field (磁場),
while humans can’t. This magnetic field guides a certain kind
of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back.
How can the fish do that It is still a mystery. Scientists have
no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities have difficulty
dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities.
For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they
get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To
solve this problem, we can turn off some lights at night. Clearly,
one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.

The silence of the pond(池塘) was broken by the first cry:
“Found something!” A swimmer ducked(扎入) into the water
with a lifeline connected to a boat. Soon, she appeared, holding
a bright blue glass bottle. It was passed to another, then into the
boat.
On a fine Sunday morning in May, a team of 10 women over
60 years old, known as the Old Ladies Against Underwater
Garbage(OLAUG), looked for rubbish across Nova Pond in
Scotia.
When the team returned, they joked about the trip. “We didn’t
even know what it was,” one swimmer said with a laugh,
showing an electronic lighter they had found. “We had to ask
a young person.”
Part protection organization, part social club, OLAUG only
accepted old women as its members. To improve the conditions
of the ponds, the group made it its mission to take rubbish away
from them. The idea of this group was from a moment of Sandy,
a retired(退休的) reporter. As a lifelong nature lover, she liked
swimming in ponds. However, the world of the pond, which was
a little polluted, made her anxious. Then she came up with a
slogan(標(biāo)語):

the pond clean-up moments. And their team could do a lot more
than people might think.

some questioned why they called themselves “old women”.

(跨生物·斑海豹)(2024江蘇揚(yáng)州中考 )
A total of 23 spotted seals(斑海豹) were put back into the
waters off the coast of Dalian in Northeast China’s Liaoning
Province on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023 as part of China’s continuous efforts to protect endangered wildlife.
The seals were hunted and sold, but have now been saved and
marked for future protection. A fishery law enforcement ship
arrived at the sea area near Dalian in the morning, carrying the
spotted seals. The seals were let go free one by one into the sea.
They swam freely in the water, returning to their natural home.
Spotted seals are nationally protected animals in China. They
are the only kind of seals that can breed(繁殖) in Chinese waters.
Like migratory(遷徙的) birds, they appear around October
every year in Liaodong Bay, and take the long journey back to
the Northwest Pacific in May after breeding. They are often
considered as the “panda of the sea”.
Thanks to China’s top-class national protection in recent years,
the population of spotted seals in Chinese waters has reached
around 2,000, while the global population is between 400,000
and 600,000. Studies have shown that these 2,000 spotted seals
are of great importance for the study and research on spotted
seals.
To protect this rare animal and its ecological environment,
the Liaoning Dalian Spotted Seal Wetlands were set up in 199
2. In January 2002, they were included in the List of Wetlands
of International Importance. Covering an area of 560,000
hectares with a coastline of about 370 kilometers, the wetlands
are rich in biological resources. They have become home to
nationally protected animals such as the spotted seal, finless
porpoise, killer whales, false killer whales, common dolphins,
bottlenose dolphins, and East Asian river dolphins.
Since 1992, researchers in Dalian have successfully saved 388
spotted seals and put 299 of them back into the wild.

Going green makes a big difference in our life. I’m Jessica
Wong. Today I’ll tell you what my family does every day to
save the earth. It’s reported that a common family produces
more than one ton of rubbish a year. Some of this waste takes
hundreds of years to decay. Also, it costs much money to buy
new things to take the place of the things we throw away.
In order to protect the environment and save money, my family
has recycled everything. On the one hand, we collect used things
every day, such as paper, bottles and boxes, and put them into
different bins. Then they are sent to a recycling center. Finally,
they are treated and can be used again. Recycling will help reduce a lot of waste. On the other hand, we use old clothes to make
different kinds of bags. I especially like to use old jeans to make
bags. These cute and useful bags are popular with young people.
As a result, I open a small shop and set up a website to sell them online.
What’s more, my parents and my brother often go to work by
bike. If it rains, they’ll take the bus. We’re also going to grow
our own vegetables, raise cows, keep hens and ducks. Soon,
we’ll be able to have eggs and milk for meals.

The Yangtze River, about 6,300 kilometres long, is the longest
river in Asia. It provides a lifeline for hundreds of millions of
people. It covers an area of over 1.8 million square kilometres,
about a fifth of the national total. The river also provides nearly
half of our country’s fresh water resources. Along with the
Yellow River, it is considered as China’s “mother river”.
However, in recent years, this “mother river” has met with
some environmental problems. It was seriously polluted and the
number of the fish is getting smaller. To solve these problems,
the government passed the Yangtze River Protection Law. The
law came into force on March 1, 2021. There are nine parts in
the law, covering areas such as resource protection, green
development and legal liability. More importantly, the law has
introduced a fishing ban (禁令) in the Yangtze River’s natural
waterways. According to the new law, both the central
government and local organizations would put the river protection into their economic (經(jīng)濟(jì)的) and social development plans.
Around 231,000 fishermen gave up their fishing rights along
the Yangtze River. The government said that more support
should be given to these people to help them find new jobs. The
government also called for stronger efforts to help prevent
activities which are not allowed by the law and encourage the
public to support the ban.

Boyan Slat has been dreaming of cleaning up the world’s
oceans for a long time.
At the age of 16, he went on a diving (潛水) vacation in Greece
and was shocked. “I saw more plastic bags than fish in the
water,” he said. From then on, Slat began to pay more attention
to ocean pollution. He decided to give up higher education
and set up The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organization. Its
purpose is to clean up ocean rubbish. He has set up the world’s
first ocean cleanup system (系統(tǒng)) with his team.
Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans,
and it can take about 500 years to break down. The World
Economic Forum predicted that the weight of ocean plastic
would match that of all the fish in our oceans by 2050. Sea
animals easily get caught in plastic. They can’t move. They can
even die if they eat it. Smaller plastic pieces can also enter the
food chain (鏈) and end up in our bodies.
Slat’s plan was to create an environmentally friendly and large
system to clear out plastic rubbish from the ocean.
After several years of tests, a machine called System 001/B
came out. It successfully caught and collected a large amount of
plastic rubbish floating in the ocean.
Slat and his team are working to improve their tool. Their
dream is to clear out 90 percent of all the ocean plastic.

To our surprise, people make a huge amount of rubbish in their
daily life. We should save the environment. The following 3Rs
may help us.
Reduce. We can reduce waste by using things wisely. People
cut down millions of trees in order to make paper. However,
people actually waste a lot of paper carelessly. We may have no
trees in the near future if we don’t save paper. Besides paper,
people also waste other things. They don’t know how to deal
with the waste in some big cities. That’s why people need to
make waste less.
Reuse. We should think about how to reuse the used things
before we throw them away. We can wash our old clothes and
give them to the people who can’t afford new clothes. Family
members can share the clothes with each other if possible.
Recycle. Recycling some rubbish such as empty cans, plastic
bottles and used paper is very easy. We can make some money
by recycling it. For example, used plastic bottles can be collected
and smashed (粉碎). It can be made into usable plastic things
again. So why not try our best to recycle as many things as
possible

Do you notice the background music playing when you’re
shopping in a supermarket Do you care how the goods are
placed Though we may not realize it, most of us do pay attention
to things like colors, sounds and even smells when we shop. All
of these influence your shopping experience in order to make
you buy more or buy something you don’t really want.
Supermarkets want you to spend as much time as possible on
shopping. They know that the longer you stay, the more you’ll
see and want to buy. How do they do it Once you enter a
supermarket, it is not always easy to get out again. Most
supermarkets have only one exit (出口). To find the way out,
you’re forced to walk past many goods that are on sale.
Once you enter the door, the first thing you see in most
supermarkets is the fruit and vegetable area, which is full of
smells and colors that make you hungry. Music also makes you
buy more. One study found that people spend up to 34% longer
shopping in shops where music is played.
In most supermarkets, many expensive goods are kept on
shelves at eye level where they are easily seen and reached.
Cheaper goods are placed close to the floor, so you have to bend
down to get them.

Because of his excellent performance, Hao Yongquan was
chosen as Gansu’s most beautiful forest ranger (護(hù)林員) in
December, 2023.
Hao has been a forest ranger for 37 years since he stopped
serving in the army in 1987. He and his workmates at Guanyin
Forest Farm are called the “forests eyes” and “green
guardians”.
“Daily work usually starts with patrolling (巡邏). Every
morning, we carry necessary equipment after having breakfast
and then set off to forests with dry food and water bottles,
patrolling until it gets dark,” Hao said.
Rangers have been living in the mountains and forests for
years, getting used to difficulties and loneliness. They always
go out early and return at sunset during the whole year, and
their duty is to protect green mountains and clear waters.
A forest ranger often has to walk more than 12 kilometers
a day, and a pair of shoes wears out in two to three months,
according to Hao.
Hao Yongquan works at the Liuping Forest Management
Office. It manages 10,511.6 hectares (公頃).
“Because of poor road conditions, if rangers go to the farthest
villages for patrols, they have to walk 30 to 40 kilometers on
mountain roads, climb four mountains, and cross more than 10
rivers,” Hao said. “And each patrol takes three to four days.”
When Hao returns from his patrol every day, he writes down
the results in the patrol diary, recording his love for mountains
and forests.
“The environment is improving day by day, and that makes
me feel my work is worth it,” he said.

forest ranger

32.What are Hao Yongquan and his workmates called

33.What is the duty of the forest rangers

In December, 2023.
They are called the “forests eyes” and “green guardians”.
To protect green mountains and clear waters.
34.How many days does the farthest village patrol take

35.Why does Hao Yongquan feel his work is worth it

I can still remember my primary school homework on animals.
I decided 36 (write) about the whale(鯨). I have loved them
from a young age but I’m not quite sure why I love them. It might be something about 37 (they) shape. They have a smooth
shape, and their tails look like a heart. They also move so 38
(slow) and beautifully, like a tree dancing in the wind. This way,
they seem very clever.
So, of course, one of my best memories 39 (be) when I got
to see a type of whale called the southern right whale in Argentina. Watching them moving smoothly in the water, I felt 40
(happy) than ever. They were so beautiful!
And I’m not the only one who loves whales. Different people
across the world have a special place for whales in their 41
(heart). Let’s take the Māori people in New Zealand as 42
example. Living by the ocean, they see whales as guardians
(守護(hù)者) of the ocean and talk about them a lot in their 43
(tradition) stories.
Why was I interested in whales like the Māori people 44
they need our protection. That’s what my school homework

Protect the earth and love animals
Good morning, everyone! Today I am very happy to be here to
give a talk about protecting the earth and loving animals.
Nowadays, the pollution is quite serious. Some people cut
down a lot of trees and kill wild animals for money. I think
there are some ways to protect the earth and animals. We can
plant more trees and love animals. We should stop throwing
rubbish everywhere. We can tell people the importance of
protecting the environment. Humans share the same home
with nature. It’s important to protect the earth and love animals.

clean for the fish, birds and people who live nearby. They also

birds(候鳥). People used to call the mountain Daqueshan,
which means bird-hunting mountain.
The villagers used to hunt birds on the mountain. Then one
year, they couldn’t hear birds singing. People started to worry
if migratory birds would return again. In 1984, the Hongtupo
Forest Police Station was set up. The officers worked on the
mountain, trying to find migratory birds and stop people from
hunting them. The job was really difficult. They might lose
their way or meet dangerous animals.
The officers also tried to tell villagers the importance of
protecting birds and other wild animals. They visited the villagers
door to door and helped them with farm work. They even
organized activities in schools to get their messages across to
children. Now, even children know that birds are to be loved.
The mountain is greener, the water is clearer, and more and
more animals come to live here. It has become a bird-protecting
mountain. Many people have opened bed-and-breakfasts(旅館)
