Past Continuous Tense
過去進行時
過去進行時主要表示：
在過去某一時刻正在進行的動作
They were eating breakfast at 7:00 am
yesterday.
(b) I was writing a letter at this time

Past continuous tense
在過去某段時間一直在進行的動作
(a) From 1983 to 1998, he was teaching

Past continuous tense
過去進行時的句式
（1）基本結構：was/were + v-ing
（2）否定式： was/were not + v-ing
was not = wasn’t
were not = weren’t
（3）一般疑問句： was/were+主語+V-ing
（4）特殊疑問句： wh-+was/ were +主語+V-ing

④ 表示所屬關系的動詞： belong，have，own，hold（容納）等。

with ‘while’ , ‘when’ and ‘as’
when, while 和 as 這三個詞都有
“當……時候”的意思。
There were fewer sandstorms when my grandparents were young.
我祖父母年輕時沙塵暴要少些。

‘while’ , ‘when’ and ‘as’
While Mille was watching TV, her mum was sleeping.
米莉在看電視時，媽媽在睡覺。
I saw a traffic accident as I was riding to school this morning.
今天早晨我騎自行車時看到一起交通事故。
2.when 和 as 既可以指某一點時間，也可以指某一段時間，其從句謂語動詞表示的動作既可以是瞬間性的，也可以是延續性的；while指一段時間，從句中的謂語動詞必須是延續性的。即：指一段時間時when, while 和as都可用；指一點時間時，只能用when或as，不能用while。
when ,while 的區別
I was reading when you came in.
I was reading when you were sleeping.
When引導的時間狀語從句，謂語是延續性的，或者短暫性的。通常用一般過去時，也可以用進行時。
when while 的區別
My mother was watching TV while I was doing my homework.
He was taking a shower while his wife was talking on the phone.
while引導的時間狀語從句，謂語動詞只能是延續性的，通常用進行時。
The teacher came in ____ students were talking noisily.

when 后通常加短暫性動詞，如：arrive, come in,
get up, open, close, finish, begin, come, go,
arrive, reach, get to, leave, move, borrow, buy, die, knock 等
While后通常加延續性動詞, 如：live, run, stay,
clean, play, hold, watch, teach, read, study,
teach, eat, drink, write, dance, sing, smoke
等
