That afternoon I received just one of the daily notes I’d been getting from my kindergarten son’s principal at school, complaining about his bad behavior at school. Upon the advice of my fellow homeschooling mothers, I ordered a preschool program that centered around singing. I found the curriculum very easy to teach. Surprisingly, it was a lot of fun! I started to realize that he just needed attention. When he got my undivided attention, he suddenly became calmer than ever before.
Around the same time, my husband took a job as a traveling carpenter, and he’d be gone nine to ten weeks at a time. That’s not what a mother of four young kids wants to hear! Then, I had a brainstorm. I could homeschool all four kids, and we traveled with him some of the time. It would help us spend more time together, and it might just work.
We bought an older motor home with all the basics: full kitchen, bathroom, and more. It even had beds for the kids. Over the next few years, we traveled everywhere my husband went for work. I learned how to put together unit studies that worked for all grade levels. I taught science, social studies, and language arts to all the kids at once.
