Last night one of my Chinese friends took
me to a concert of Chinese folk music. The
piece which was played on the erhu especially moved me. The music was strangely beautiful, but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain. The piece had a simple name, Erquan Yingyue (Moon Reflected on Second Spring), but it was one of the most moving pieces of music that I’ve ever heard. The erhu sounded so sad that I almost cried along with it as I listened. Later I looked up the history of Erquan Yingyue, and I began to understand the sadness in the music.
The music was written by Abing, a folk musician who was born in the city of Wuxi in 1893. His mother died when he was very young. Abing’s father taught him to play many musical instruments, such as the drums, dizi and erhu, and by age 17, Abing was known for his musical ability. However, after his father died, Abing’s life grew worse. He was very poor. Not only that, he developed a serious illness and became blind. For several years, he had no home. He lived on the streets and played music to make money. Even after Abing got married and had a home again, he continued to sing and play on the streets. He performed in this way for many years.
Abing’s amazing musical skills made him very popular during his lifetime. By the end of his life, he could play over 600 pieces of music. Many of these were written by Abing himself. It is a pity that only six pieces of music in total were recorded for the future world to hear, but his popularity continues to this day. Today, Abing’s Erquan Yingyue is a piece which all the great erhu masters play and praise. It has become one of China’s national treasures. Its sad beauty not only paints a
picture of Abing’s own life but also
makes people recall their deepest wounds
from their own sad or painful experiences.

(2) sadness n. 悲傷；悲痛，不可數名詞，其形容詞形式為 sad，副詞形式為 sadly。
e.g. Why did you feel a deep sadness. 你為什么感到深深的悲痛？
-ness 是名詞后綴，有些形容詞加 -ness 可構成抽象名詞，表示性質、情況、狀態等。
e.g. kind adj. 和藹的 → kindness n. 仁慈；好意
happy adj. 幸福的；高興的 →happiness n. 幸福；快樂
ill adj. 生病的 →illness n. 疾病
good adj.善良的 →goodness n. 善良
(3) pain n. 痛苦；疼痛；苦惱，指精神上或肉體上的痛苦。既可以用作可數名詞，也可用作不可數名詞。
e.g. The pain got worse and worse. 疼痛越來越厲害了。
【注意】表示人“身體某個部位疼痛”要用have a pain / pains in +部位。
e.g. He has a pain in the knee. 他膝蓋疼。
painful adj. 令人痛苦的；令人疼痛的
e.g. Is your back still painful 你的背還疼嗎？
3. reflect 的用法（教材第70頁）
reflect v. 反映；映出
e.g. His face was reflected in the mirror. 他的臉映照在鏡子里。
reflect 還可以表示“顯示，表明，表達”。
e.g. Our newspaper aims to reflect the views of the local community. 我們的
報紙旨在表達當地人民的心聲。
reflect 后可以接 that 從句，表示“深思，仔細考慮”。
e.g. He reflected that she was probably right after all. 他深思后明白她可能真
的是對的。

look up 查閱。代詞作其賓語時，只能放在兩詞之間。
e.g. You can look it up in your dictionary. 你可以在字典中查閱。
look up 還可表示“抬頭看”。
e.g. Don’t look up. 不要向上看。

be known for 相當于 be famous for
e.g. Einstein was known for his theory of relativity. 愛因斯坦以他的相對
論而聞名。
【拓展】(1) be known as 意為“以某種身份出名”。
e.g. Einstein was known as a great scientist. 愛因斯坦以一位偉大的科學
家著稱。
(2) be known to 意為“為……所熟知”。
e.g. He is known to us all. 我們都熟悉他。

continue to do sth.意為“繼續做某事”，還可用continue doing sth.或continue with sth.，它們在意思上沒有明顯的區別。
e.g. She continued to work after she had her baby. 她生了孩子后繼續工作。
They continued to meet every day. 他們繼續每天見面。
He continued watching me. 他繼續監視我。

(1) perform v. 表演；執行；履行

(2) in this way 意為“這樣，通過這種方法”，可以放在句首或句末。其中 way 為名詞，意為“方式，方法”。

11. wound 的用法（教材第70頁）
n. 傷；傷口；創傷
e.g. Could you please help me to clean the wound 你能幫我清理一下傷口嗎？
v. 使（身體）受傷；傷害
e.g. Had you been wounded in the arm 你的手臂受過傷嗎？
【拓展】辨析 hurt, wound, harm 與 damage
hurt：側重指給有生命的物體造成機體或精神、感情上的傷害。
wound：特指對身體的傷害，尤指在戰斗中受的傷，強調外部的創傷，也
可指精神的傷害。
harm：主要用于有生命的東西，指引起嚴重的痛苦和損傷；有時也用于抽
象的事物，指造成不良后果。
damage：通常指對無生命物體的損害，有降低物體的價值、破壞其功能的
后果。
