He Studies Harder Than He Used to
Li Wen is a normal 15-year-old boy from the
countryside. He works very hard and does well in
school. It is hard to believe that he used to have difficulties in school. When he was a little boy, he seldom caused any problems, and his family spent a lot of time together. ______. His parents moved to the city to look for jobs, and his grandparents came to take care of him. But he missed his parents so much and he often felt lonely and unhappy.

Li Wen’s unhappiness began to influence his schoolwork. He became less interested in studying. Sometimes he was absent from classes and failed his examinations. Finally, Li Wen’s parents made the decision to send him to a boarding school. However, Li Wen was shy and was not able to make friends quickly in school. He found life there difficult. One day he told his teacher that he wanted to leave the school. ____ and she called his parents. She advised them to talk with their son in person. (1) absent 作形容詞，意為”缺席的；不在場的”，常與介詞from
連用。
e.g. They were absent from work that day. 他們那天沒有上班。
absence 作名詞，意為“缺席，不在”。
e.g. The decision was made in my absence. 這個決定是在我不在場的
時候做出的。
(2) fail 此處用作及物動詞，意為“未能通過”；也可用作不及物動詞，因此 fail an examination（考試不及格）也可表示為 fail in an examination。
e.g. Bob always fails (in) his examinations. 鮑勃總是考試不及格。
fail 也可跟動詞不定式，fail to do sth.意為“未能/沒能做某事”。
e.g. I failed to pass the driving test. 我未能通過駕駛考試。

take pride in 意為“為……感到自豪”，in 為介詞，其后可接名詞、
代詞或動詞-ing形式。相當于 be proud of。

be proud of 意為“為……驕傲/感到自豪”。
proud 為形容詞，意為“驕傲的；自豪的”，其名詞形式為 pride，
意為“驕傲；自豪”。
e.g. His family are proud of him. 他的家人為他感到自豪。
【拓展】be proud to do sth. 意為“為做某事感到驕傲/自豪”。
e.g. He is proud to be a student of Tsinghua University. 他為成為一名
清華大學的學生而感到自豪。

even though 意為“盡管，即使，縱然”，有退一步設想的意味，
相當于even if，多用于書面語中。
e.g. He went on working with his assistant even though both of them were

advise sb. to do sth. 意為“建議某人做某事”。
e.g. The boss advised him to leave as soon as possible. 老板建議他盡快離開。

advise doing sth. 意為“建議做某事” 。
e.g. He advised leaving early. 他建議早點兒離開。
in person 意為“親身；親自”。
e.g. I will go to fetch it in person. 我要親自去取。

make the/a decision意為“做決定；下決心”。其中 decision 為
名詞，意為“決定，決心”，其動詞形式為 decide，意為“決

make the/a decision 相當于 decide，其用法為：
make the/a decision to do sth.=decide to do sth.“決定做某事”。
e.g. You must make the decision right now. 你現在必須做出決定。
He made a decision to learn medicine.=He decided to learn medicine. 他決定學醫。
make a decision 中的 decision 前面可以被其他形容詞修飾，如good, big, important, final, difficult 等。
