Alice: Look! This restaurant looks interesting. The sign says a rock band plays
here every evening.
He Wei: Why don’t we come back here for dinner later Let’s ask what time
the band starts playing.
[Alice and He Wei walk up to a staff person at the door.]
He Wei: Excuse me, could you tell us when the band starts playing this evening
Staff: Eight o’clock.The restaurant is always busy at that time, so come a little
earlier to get a table.
He Wei: OK. Thank you!

start doing sth. 意為“開始做某事”。
e.g. He started working last week. 他上周開始工作。
Language Points
【拓展】作“開始”講時，start 與 begin 二者可互換，但以下幾種情況
只能用 start，不能用 begin。
(1) 表示“創辦”“開設”時。
e.g. He started a new shop last year. 去年他新開了一家商店。
(2) 表示“（機器）開動”時。
e.g. Can you start the car 你能發動這輛車嗎？
(3) 表示“出發”“動身”時。
e.g. We started early in the morning. 我們在上午早早出發了。
3. I suggest Water City Restaurant in Water World. 我建議去水上世界
的水城餐館。（教材第19頁）
suggest 及物動詞，意為“建議；提議”，名詞形式為 suggestion，意為
“建議；提議”。其用法為：
(1) suggest sth. 意為“提議/建議某事”。
e.g. He suggested a walk. 他提議散散步。
(2) suggest doing sth. 意為“建議做某事”。
e.g. She suggested going there by bike. 她建議騎自行車去那兒。
(3) suggest + that 引導的賓語從句，意為“建議……”，
這時賓語從句要用虛擬語氣，謂語動詞“（should+）動詞原形”。
e.g. He suggested (that) we (should) do it at once. 他建議我們立刻做這
件事。
【拓展】
suggest 還可譯為“暗示；表明”。
e.g. His pale face suggested that he was ill. 他蒼白的臉色表明他生
病了。

on one’s way to … 意為“在某人去……的路上”。
e.g. Yesterday I met a friend of mine on my way to school. 昨天在去上
學的路上，我遇到了我的一位朋友。
【拓展】常見的與 way 相關的短語還有：

5. The restaurant is always busy at that time, so come a little earlier
to get a table. 這家餐館那個時候總是很忙，所以早一點兒來，
以便能找到餐位。（教材第19頁）
a little earlier意為“早一點兒”。其中a little在句中修飾比較級
earlier。在形容詞比較級前常有much ……得多，a littler/a bit
一點兒，even甚至，still更等來修飾，表示程度進一步加深。
e.g. I have much more homework than him. 我的作業比他的多得多。
He is very busier today. 今天他甚至更忙。
