Ideas to help write a summary of the article on the Silk Road The overall introduction The geography The history The trade and cultural exchanges The significanceSummary of the article on the Silk RoadSampleThe Silk Road, which extended from East Asia to the Mediterranean, was a network of ancient trade routes. The 5,000-kilometre Chang’an-Tianshan Corridor is a key section of this network. The Silk Road passes through deserts, mountains, grasslands and valleys on its way westwards. In the 2nd century BCE, in the Han Dynasty, the Chang’an-Tianshan Corridor began to develop. The network remained in use until the 16th century, after experiencing a gradual expansion between the 6th and 14th centuries.SampleAt first, silk was the main item exported by China on the Silk Road, and then exports gradually included china and tea. Horses, wool, cotton and grapes were imported along the network. The network also served as a bridge for cultural exchange. Astronomy and mathematics were introduced to China, and so was Buddhism. Important Chinese inventions reached the West through the network.Through these routes, Eastern and Western civilizations were connected. Today, such exchanges are continuing with the Belt and Road Initiative. Overall, the Silk Road is a crucial part of humanity’s common heritage.SampleThe Silk Road Economic Belt initiative has assisted many countries in developing transport infrastructure. For example, in Kenya, China helped build the country’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). This development is one of the most significant projects in Kenya since it became independent in 1963. The SGR facilitates local industries, as well as trade between Africa and China.DiscussionEnergy is another way the initiative has impacted countries along its path. A hydropower station project in Pakistan was approved and operated by a Chinese company. After its completion, it will generate enough electric power to provide for the Pakistani people’s daily use and also assist in the nation’s economic development.SampleThe initiative also promotes trade between the countries on its routes. For example, Kazakhstan, a landlocked country, struggles to grow vegetables because of its very cold weather. The Belt helps enhance cooperation between Kazakhstan and the north-western Chinese Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. They are thus able to do more cross-border trade in vegetables than before. The trade between Xinjiang and Kazakhstan not only provides the Kazakhs with their basic needs, but also generates mutual economic benefits for both the countries.SampleDefinitions1) v. to do sth or try to achieve sth over a period of time2) v. to follow or chase sb/sth, especially in order to catch themVocabulary webpursue a goal/an aim/an objective(1) pursueDefinitions1) v. to give a document, proposal, etc. to sb in authority so that they can study or consider it2) v. to accept the authority, control or greater strength of sb/sth; to agree to sth because of thisVocabulary websubmit v. submission n.submit sth to sb; submit an application(2) submitDefinitions1) v. to come out of a dark, confined or hidden place2) v. to become known3) v. to start to exist; to appear or become knownVocabulary webemerge v. emergent adj. emergence n.see: emergency(3) emergeDefinitions1) v. to give sb sth that they can use, or some work or responsibility2) v. to provide a person for a particular task or position3) v. to say that sth has a particular value or function, or happens at a particular time or placeVocabulary webassign v. assignment n.(4) assignDefinitionn. an act of increasing or making sth increase in size, amount or importanceVocabulary webexpand v. expansion n. expansionism n. expansionist n.(5) expansionDefinitions1) n. a new plan for dealing with a particular problem or for achieving a particular purpose2) n. the ability to decide and act on your own without waiting for sb to tell you what to doVocabulary webon one’s own initiative; take the initiative(6) initiativeFill in the blanks with the proper forms of the (given) words.(1) In the absence of my commanding officer, I acted _____________ my own initiative.(2) The teacher usually _________________ (assign) a different task to each of the children.(3) Make sure your claims for expenses _____________ (submit) by the end of the month.onassigns/assignedare submitted/ will be submitted(4) After university she was still undecided as to what career she wanted _____________ (pursue).(5) No new evidence ________ (emerge) during the investigation.(6) The universities _____________ (expand) in the past five years, thus allowing many more people the chance of higher education.to pursueemergedhave expandedFill in the blanks with the proper forms of the (given) words.1.
