A couple has recently placed their garbage can out for collection for the first time in 14 months, all thanks to their recycling skills. Richard and Louise Arnold have established such an effective routine that they only need to put their garbage can on the side of the street once a year.
Louise explained that making small monthly changes in her life has resulted in her family producing very little waste. She said, “It’s not as difficult as you might think if you start with small steps. We began with soap, switching from bath cream to natural soap without packaging. These bars are large enough that we cut them in half, using one for the sink and the other half for the shower. It’s both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.”
“So it’s actually quite easy. Just go around your house and think of little things you can do gradually and you’ll start noticing the difference,” Louise added. Currently, the couple takes recyclable waste to the tip, donates clothes to charity shops, and brings soft plastics and batteries to a shop that accepts them.
In 2017, the couple established No Waste Living, which initially started as a weekend stall at the local market and has since developed into a website. Louise regularly writes a newsletter for her hundreds of subscribers. They also started selling eco-friendly products, ranging from non-chemical household cleaning and washing solutions for a “l(fā)ess toxic home” to bamboo washing-up brushes. Louise mentioned, “I started No Waste Living because I wanted to show our achievements and lead by example.”
Although the family occasionally faces criticism, Louise remains determined. She said, “The main point of contention(爭(zhēng)論) for people regarding new waste rules is having to drive their waste to a recycling center, which adds to their already busy lives. However, in the long run, you will create more space in your home, save money, and spend less time dealing with garbage cans.”
24. How did the couple start their waste reduction journey
A. By replacing small soaps with large ones.
B. By using a small amount of bath cream.
C. By recycling soft plastics and batteries.
D. By using unpackaged soap bars.
25. Why did the couple found No Waste Living
A. To bring eco-products to market.
B. To treat recyclable waste from the neighborhood.
C. To inspire others to follow in their footsteps.
D. To answer the call of their subscribers.
26. Why do some people dislike new waste rules
A. They increase the cost of garbage collection.
B. They mean more work to deal with garbage.
C. They establish a set time for waste management.
D. They limit the daily amount of garbage for collection.
27. What is the text mainly about
A. A planet- friendly lifestyle.
B. The “l(fā)ess poisonous home” concept.
C. The global trend in recycling.
D. A business - minded couple.

The state of Maine is famous for its delicious wild blueberries. The blueberries grow well on barren mountaintops, in abandoned fields, along rural roadsides or where most other plants don’t. They are also decidedly native as they have been growing in this landscape for more than10,000 years.
At David Dickey’s small farm, farmers harvest blueberries, packing a burst of sweetness into tiny purple package. They’re also harvesting sunshine. A grid of solar panels stands a few feet above four hectares (10 acres) of the land. The electricity these generate powers a few hundred nearby homes. Under and around these panels are extending fields of the low, thick blueberry bushes.
Solar panels generate electric power without sending out the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that fossil fuels release as they’re burned. Fixing solar panels on farms helps solve another major problem: finding the space to collect enough sunlight to produce enough supply of electricity.
This concept is called “Agrivoltaics”. The word combines “agriculture” with “photovoltaics (光伏)”. Photovoltaic materials — such as solar panels — generate electric current from sunlight.
Growing crops requires hard work — often generating only a low income. Agrivoltaic projects can benefit farmers by giving them a second crop: electric power. Also, farmers can pick up some extra cash by renting their land to power companies that will fix their own solar panels on the site.
At the University of Maine in Orono, Dr. Calderwood focuses on finding ways to grow better berries. Her work includes studying how the bushes can be planted to produce delicious berries despite the shade cast by the solar panels at Dickey’s farm.
“Although the idea behind Agrivoltaics has been around for decades, it’s really just exploded over the last few years. Around the world, farmers and solar companies are working together to combine farming with the production of electricity,” Calderwood says.
28. How is the second paragraph developed
A. By offering suggestions.
B. By making predictions.
C. By making comparisons.
D. By giving descriptions.
29. How do the solar panels make a difference in generating electricity
A. They produce no pollution.
B. They take up less space.
C. They block out direct sunlight.
D. They avoid the waste of electricity.
30. What is the main advantage of Agrivoltaic projects
A. Additional source of income for farmers.
B. Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
C. Increased agricultural productivity.
D. Promotion of sustainable farming practices.
31. What can we learn about Agrivoltaic projects
A. They are a creative idea.
B. They are only useful to farmers.
C. They are in a growing trend.
D. They are a traditional farming.

Two of the biggest challenges faced by new and potential electric vehicle (EV) drivers are range anxiety and the speed of charging. However, these shouldn’t have to be challenges at all. That is according to a study by Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, and the University of Delaware, USA. Researchers discovered that a change in refuelling mindset (觀念模式), rather than improving the size or performance of the battery, could be the answer to these concerns.
Researchers have now identified three different types of behaviour around refuelling a car. The first model is the monitoring fuel gauge (測(cè)量?jī)x器) model — the driver refuels when the fuel is running out. The second model is the planning a trip model — the driver plans when and where they will stop to refuel their vehicle along a journey. The third model is the event-triggered model — the driver automatically plugs in (接通電源) as soon as arriving home or work. The first model represents how most people refuel a petrol car, and the third model is the best for EV usage.
Experienced EV users have chosen an event or location to trigger their plug-in; for example, they will automatically plug in when they come home or get to work, so it becomes part of their morning or evening routine, which makes it less of a chore to think about charging. There is a lot of emphasis on the time it takes to charge an EV, but if you do it overnight, it is just the time it takes to plug it in.
In conclusion, for most people’s everyday driving, the new study shows that you don’t have to think too much about charging at all. In terms of cost, it is also a lot cheaper to charge slowly overnight or at work than fast charging on the go, and it is better for the health of the battery.
32. In which part of a newspaper can you most likely to read the text
A. Culture. B. Technology. C. Fashion. D. Health.
33. What does the text advise EV drivers to do
A. Charge EVs at night or during work.
B. Think about the speed of charging.
C. Monitor fuel gauge occasionally.
D. Plan their trips according to their cars.
34. What can be inferred from the text
A. A bigger battery is the best solution to range anxiety.
B. It’s difficult for drivers to remember to charge EVs.
C. Charging is not a concern for those wanting to buy EVs.
D. Fast charging is much cheaper than slow charging.
35. What may be the best title for the text
A. Choosing a better EV
B. Changing your refuelling mindset
C. Slow charging or fast charging
D. Petrol cars or electric cars

When Tim was a little boy, he and his father were very close and Tim always asked about everything he didn’t know. His father, a typical Chinese peasant, was very silent and did not talk much with others, while he was a good talker for his son. Though they were in a distant countryside, they lived a happy life.
Ten years later, Tim was a student of boarding high school in the city, who was crazy about the Internet. He always sneaked out of his school to play online games when other students were in their dreams. As a consequence, his grades became more and more terrible. He did not care about that.
His teachers and classmates offered him a lot of suggestions, but he never took them seriously. His parents were also invited to his school several times. Nothing changed.
Though Tim’s family was not well off financially, his father was never late to give him living costs. Every time his old father came to the school, in order to take the return bus, he hardly had time to have a long chat as before except for asking his son to study hard.
One day, his father came to give him the living costs again, but this time the old father arrived a little bit later than usual. There was no return bus. He had to stay for a night in the city. At the school gate, the old father would like to talk with his son. However, Tim refused to talk and said “You are not well-educated and should have nothing to teach me.” After taking the money, he went back through the school gate, leaving his old father alone there.

A possible version
It is obvious that more and more students spend much time on short videos nowadays. On the one hand, watching short videos is a good way for us to have a break and get rid of the pressure from school. Besides, we can also learn some knowledge and useful skills at the same time. On the other hand, if not controlled, students can easily indulge in short videos, which makes them unable to focus on their studies.
In my opinion, short videos have brought pleasure and relaxation to us, and we should make better use of it and properly manage our time.
第二節(jié) Sample writing:
That night, as usual, he climbed over the fence. After he found there was a sleeping man in the corner. Taking a close look, he found it was his father. He quickly and quietly climbed back and returned to his dormitory. Lying on his bed, he thought a lot. “Dad stayed overnight in the corner to save costs, but never shortened my expenses. Shame on myself!” Since that incident, Tim became a different student. He studied hard and would no longer sneak out at night to play the online game.
In October, Tim’s father received a report card and smiled. When Tim came back home, before his father could speak a word, he hugged his father tightly and said, “I made a big progress in study and sorry for what I said to you before. You are a great man in my mind. Your action and selfless love support me a lot.” As always, the old man showed a little smile, patted his son on the back and replied softly, “My little Tim is back.” Hopefully, more children will find and appreciate their parents’ love and silent support.
