I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
listen to know how to express one’s opinion of popular history books;
write an article on popular history books;
express themselves freely through listening and reading.

1. Use listening tips to get the right information.
2. Get some useful information to prepare for writing an article on popular history books.
III. Predicted area of difficulty
1. Understand the introduction of Alan’s favourite popular history book through listening.
2. Accumulate some useful words and expressions about writing an article on popular history books.
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
T asks Ss the following question.
Do you like reading If yes, what kind of book do you like best and why

Step 2 Listen and answer
T instructs Ss to understand the listening tip on page 36.
(1) What is paraphrasing
(2) How do we recognize paraphrasing
T asks Ss to listen to the recording for the first time and finish A1 on page 36.
T asks Ss to predict the answers of A2 and finish it by listening to the recording again.
T checks the answers and listens to the difficult points with Ss again.

(2) What is the feature of most academic books
(3) What is the historian’s attitude towards popular history books Use details in the article to support your opinion.

Step 4 Discuss and share
T asks Ss to share something in pairs by asking the following questions.

Write down notes from what you have learnt on part A, B and C.
