I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Revising the simple future tense, present continuous tense and past continuous tense
T asks Ss to read the four sentences and fill in the blanks.
(1) The speaker ________ (analyse) the problem step by step in tomorrow’s lecture.
(2) He predicts that the government ________ (finance) the building of the new roads.
(3) Right now the group ________ (urge) scientists to work out plans to send humans to Mars.
(4) As the attacker ________ (threaten) Mary with a gun, her husband fall asleep.
T: The tense in the first two sentences is future. So the answers are “will analyse, will finance”. Of course, you can replace them with “is going to”, which is the other form of simple future tense. So the form of the simple future tense is “will/shall/be going to + v (root form)”.
T: There is a signal phrase “right now” in sentence 3, so the tense is present continuous. Its form is “is/am/are + present participle”. The right answer is “is urging”. In sentence 4, “as” means “when” and “fall asleep” suggests that the action happened in the past, so the tense in sentence 4 is past continuous tense. Its form is “was/were + present participle”.

Step 2 Exploring the rules of the future continuous tense
T asks Ss to go through the text on page 48 and find the sentences that use the future continuous tense.
T: Open your books at page 48 and read through the text. And then find out the sentences that use the future continuous tense.

Step 3 Working out the rules
T asks Ss to work out the rules of future continuous tense.
We use the future continuous tense to talk about an action that will be in progress at a particular moment in the future or a future action that is the result of a routine or arrangement.
We also use the future continuous tense to express ________.
The verb form of the future continuous tense is “________ + doing”.

Step 4 Understanding the differences between the simple future tense and the future continuous tense
T: There are some differences between the future continuous tense and the simple future tense.
1. T shows the following example:
We will be meeting at the airport this time tomorrow.
T: The signal words “this time” are a certain point and “tomorrow” suggests that the action will happen in the future. The simple future tense can’t be used here.
T: The future continuous tense indicates an action that will occur at a certain point in the future.
2. T shows the following examples:
1) When will you finish the report (Direct enquiry)
2) When will you be seeing Mr. Jackson (More politeness)
T: The first sentence is a direct inquiry, something like a boss to his or her employee. The second sentence seems to be asking someone politely.
T: The future continuous tense is more euphemistic, while the simple future tense indicates the speaker’s intention directly.

Step 5 Applying the rules
1. T asks Ss to finish B1.
T: Complete the conversations with the correct expressions in the brackets.

T: Complete the passage with the present continuous or future continuous form of the verbs or phrase in the box below.
3. T asks Ss to finish B3.
T: Write down your prediction about technological development using the future continuous tense.
