IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
T shows Ss some pictures and sentences to arouse their interest.
T: Hello, everyone. I would like to show you some pictures and sentences. These delicious food are irresistible to me. And they are always enough to lift my spirits.
As a real foodie, I enjoy all kinds of foods. My dream is to try different restaurants and taste various foods.
Yesterday I invited some friends to try a great new restaurant for dinner.
We arrived at the restaurant, only to see a huge line of people waiting to get into the restaurant.
Nothing can stop our determination to have a try. We decided to wait outside.
After an hour of waiting, we were invited to go into the restaurant and take the order.
The dishes are extremely delicious. It is worthwhile to have such a long wait.
T: From these sentences, we could see to-infinitives used as different sentence elements. Today, we will explore the rules concerning to-infinitives as subjects and predicatives.
【設計意圖:學生初中已經接觸過不定式,在必修三第二單元又已經學了動詞不定式的作定語和狀語的用法,所以教師根據本單元的話題,創設語境,編寫含有動詞不定式用作不同成分的句子,感知不定式的各種用法。讓學生感受新情境,復習舊知識,體驗新內容。】
Step 2 Exploring the rules concerning to-infinitives as subjects and predicatives
1. T asks Ss to find out to-infinitives as subjects in the blog entry.
T: Some foodies prefer to eat out while others would rather eat at home. Below is a blog entry about eating out and eating at home. Find the sentences that use to-infinitives as subjects. The first one has been done for you.
Example: To eat out was also a social activity, ...
2. T asks Ss to compare and work out the rule according to the above two sentences.
When the to-infinitive is used as a subject, we usually use the preparatory subject it at the beginning of the sentence.
3. T asks Ss to find out to-infinitives as predicatives in the blog entry.
T: Now look at this example. My first thought at mealtimes was to eat at a restaurant. In this sentence, What element is to-infinitive used as Can you find other sentences with to-infinitives as predicatives in this blog entry
4. T asks Ss to compare and work out the rule according to the above two sentences.
The to-infinitive can also be used as a predicative. It usually comes after the verb be.
5. T asks Ss to complete the following sentences.
被邀請到你家做客真的是太榮幸了。
It is a great honour to be invited to your family.
在家做飯準備環節需要花很長時間。
It takes a long time to prepare for home-cooked meals.
你為我們做了這么多美味的菜真的是太好了。
It is nice of you to make so many tasty dishes for us.

It is useful for us to learn how to cook.

6. T guides Ss to summarize the rules of to-infinitives used as subjects and predicatives.
【設計意圖:通過本環節,學生認知了不定式做主語時往往用it作形式主語。不定式做表語時表示具體動作或者將來的動作。通過設計與本單元話題相關的句子翻譯,更好地讓學生了解相應的一些句式還有不定式的被動式,為后續的教學環節做好鋪墊。】
Step 3 Applying the rules
1. T asks Ss to finish B1 on page 7 of the textbook.
T: The preparation of home-cooked meals is difficult but enjoyable. Rewrite the following sentences using to-infinitives according to the requirements in the brackets.
2. T asks Ss to finish B2 on page 7 of the textbook.
T: Do you know what Sky Buffet is Read the article about Sky Buffet and complete the article with correct forms of the verbs in the brackets.
3. T asks Ss to write a thank-you note.
T: Imagine your friend has taken you out to dinner at Sky Buffet. Write a thank-you note to your friend, offering to return the favour by inviting him or her to your home for dinner next weekend. Remember to us to-infinitives. Use the expressions below to help you.
