I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
understand the usage of the following words and expressions: compete, diverse, demonstrate, proceed, applaud, call on, rank;
2. use the above words and expressions in new situations;
3. divide sports into different categories;
4. rewrite a passage using numbers or years.

IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
Review the main idea of the article and complete the passage with the correct forms of the words and phrases in the box below.
T: Hello, everyone, nice to meet you! We’ve learned an article on the website. Today we shall review the text, discuss how to use some words and phrases, and practice using them in different situations.
T: Would you fill in the blanks using the given words

Step 2 Building vocabulary
1. Word study: compete
(1) Introduce the meanings of compete in different contexts.
T: Every day in daily life, we need to defeat others to get something we want. That is to say, we compete with others to get a gift.
They competed in such events as boxing, running and the long jump. (para. 2)
Compete has two meanings:
· to try to be more successful or better than somebody else who is trying to do the same as you
· to take part in a contest or game
T: Here are two examples for you.
· I am hoping to compete in the marathon.
· Amy and her sister are always competing for attention.

2) Collocations of compete
T: This word, compete, could be collocated with several prepositions, including with, against, for and in. Do you know the meaning of each collocation Here are three examples:
· The boy often competes with his classmates.
· The boy competed in the marathon three years ago.
· The boy tries his best to compete for the first prize.
T: After grasping the meaning of each collocation, here comes another sentence. And you need to fill in the blanks with these collocations.
· Every athlete competed in the Olympic games tries their best to compete with/against each other for being the best.
2. Word study: diverse
1) Create concrete contexts to further understand diverse.
T: In our life, we will come across diverse people who will teach us a lesson or set a good or bad example to us. These people may come from diverse cultures or countries. Later, some of them will disappear from our life.
· For over a century, people from diverse backgrounds have made joint efforts to help realize Coubertin’s dream. (para. 3)
diverse: very different from each other and of various kinds.
2) Practice

3. Word study: demonstrate
1) Introduce the meanings of demonstrate in different contexts.
T: Every day, at school, teachers will demonstrate knowledge in detail with the aid of the Power-point, especially science. Even the complicated experiment will be demonstrated to make us seize it clearly.
· He came to public attention during the 1960 Rome Olympics, when he won the light heavyweight gold medal for the USA, demonstrating great talent and personality in the process. (para. 4)
demonstrate: to show sth clearly by giving proof or evidence
T: In addition, demonstrate has many other meanings in various contexts. Here are three sentences for you. Read them and guess the meanings of each one.
· The theories were demonstrated to be false.
· Her job involves demonstrating new educational software.
· They are demonstrating in favour of free higher education.
From the above examples, we can conclude: To demonstrate is:
· to show sth clearly by giving proof or evidence;
· to show and explain how sth works or how to do sth;
· to take part in a public meeting or march, usually as a protest or to show support for sth.
2) Practice
T: One practice for you:
· Finally, she had the chance to demonstrate her musical talents.
4. Word study: proceed
1) Introduce the meaning of proceed in a concrete context.
T: As we all know, the road to success isn’t smooth. What really matters is to find a suitable and correct way. Once you have found it, you need to proceed to do it. Only in this way can you realize your dream.
· Afterwards, this young man proceeded to become the world heavyweight champion in 1964, and later changed his name to the one we all know—Muhammad Ali. (para. 4)

5. Word study: applaud
1) Introduce the meaning of applaud in different contexts.
T: In class, the teacher sometimes will put forward a difficult problem for us to solve. Once solved, we’d like to applaud for him/her to encourage him/her.
· Another sportsperson that should be applauded is Jessica Ennis-Hill. (para. 5)
applaud: to express praise for sb/sth because you approve of them or it
Here comes the first sentence.
· We applaud the decision to go ahead with the new building.
Apart from this, applaud has another meaning. For example:
· They rose to applaud the speaker.
T: Obviously, applaud means show your approval of sb/sth by clapping your hands.
2) Practice
· He started to applaud and the others joined in.
6. Word study: call on
1) Create concrete contexts to further understand call on and learn to make sentences using the phrase.
T: Nowadays, the environment has been worse and worse as a result of all kinds of pollution. So it’s necessary for us to call on the public to take some action.
· The 2008 Beijing Olympics called on the whole world to join in the Olympic spirit and build a better future for humanity with the slogan “One World, One Dream”. (para. 6)

2) Practice
T: Read this sentence and complete it.
· I think we should figure out some ways to keep people from polluting the river and call on them to fight against pollution.
7. Word study: rank
1) Create concrete contexts to have a better understanding of rank and learn to apply it.
T: This word rank is often seen in the computer games. If we win, we would get a good rank in the published list of names. Instead, if we are defeated, we will rank lower.
· In addition to hosting the Olympics for the first time, China also ranked first in the medal table. (para. 6)
rank: to give sb/sth a particular position on a scale according to quality, importance, success, etc.; to have a position of this kind.
2) Practice
·The university is ranked first in the country for agriculture.
·At the height of his career, he ranked second in the world.

Sports can be divided into different categories. Think of as many sports as you can and fill in the table below. You can also add your own categories.
T: There are a variety of sports categories in the Olympic Games. Now, it’s time for you to divide the sports that you know into different categories through judging. The following table only contains three categories. Of course, you could add your own categories.
