Step 1 Lead-in
T arouses Ss’ interest in the class by asking questions.
Did you join any school club in the middle school What was it
Why did you join this club
T: Hello, everyone. As we know, a school club enriches students’ school life and helps students develop different skills, so did you join any school club in the middle school What was it Why did you join this club
S1: I used to be in the Dancing Club to make new friends and improve my dancing skills. What’s more, by learning to dance in public, I was also more confident.
S2: I used to be in the Swimming Club and I joined this club mainly to lose weight and improve my health.
T introduces different school clubs, takes the Film Club as an example and informs Ss of the purposes of joining the Film Club.
T: As a matter of fact, there are many school clubs in our school, for instance, the Film Club, the Photography Club, the Dancing Club, the Calligraphy Club and so on.
Take the Film Club as an example. By participating in these activities, we can learn to appreciate some good films, make a microfilm, enrich our school life, broaden our horizons, and develop our aesthetic ability.

Step 2 Revision
T asks Ss to recall the structure of Maggie’s proposal.
T: We know that Maggie wants to start a new school club and has handed in her proposal to Mr Zhou. Do you still remember the structure of her proposal
T: A proposal usually requires such information as club name, club leader, meeting time, club aim, club activities, materials needed, plan for finding new members. You also need to sign your name at the end of the proposal.

Step 3 Talking in pairs
T guides Ss to choose one school club that interests them and asks Ss to share their ideas for starting a new school club with their partners.
T lists useful words and expressions to help students with their talk.
T: In order to make students’ school life more colourful, you have the intention of starting a new school club. Now choose one school club that interests you most and share your idea of starting a new school club with your partner, using these useful expressions. These useful expressions are helpful in getting your ideas across to others. When talking with your partner, please keep the structure of a proposal in mind.
2. T gives an example of how to start the talk.
T: We can start like this.
A: I’d like to start a film club so that students can learn more about films and film-making.
B: Great idea! What's the plan for each meeting

Ss talk in pairs about their proposal for starting a new school club.
Step 4 Presentation
T: All of you have shared your ideas for starting a new school club with your partner. Now, time for some groups to share your ideas with us.
S1: I’d like to start a calligraphy club so that students can pay more attention to calligraphy and feel more proud of Chinese culture.
S2: Sounds great! What’s your plan for each meeting
S1: We plan to invite teachers to teach us how to write Chinese characters better at each meeting. Then we practice writing.
S2: Club members can also raise questions, make comments on each other’s writing and improve their writing.
S1: Great idea! What materials do you think we need
S2: We need writing brushes, paper and ink.
S1: Sure. How can we find new members
S2: Let’s make posters and put them up around our school.
S1: Perfect! I also plan to attract more students by putting a notice on our school website.
S2: We’ll meet for an hour each week. What about Sunday afternoons, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
S1: Great! Let’s finish our proposal!

Step 5 Writing a proposal
T instructs Ss to write their proposal based on the information from parts A, B, C.
T: From your presentation, I find that most of you have had a good knowledge of the structure of a proposal for a new school club. It’s time for you to write the proposal. When writing it, combine your ideas from part C with the information in parts A and B. To make your writing logical and better, you are supposed to plan your writing ahead of time.
Activity 1: Planning
T asks Ss to pay attention to the text type, the structure and the language.
T explains the text type of the writing—a proposal, and introduces the purpose of a proposal—to get the reader to agree to your suggestion or plan.
T: When planning the writing, you should pay attention to the text type, the structure and the language. As for the text type, in this class you are going to write a proposal. Do you know what is a proposal and what is its purpose
T: A proposal is a formal suggestion or plan. And its purpose is to get the reader to agree to your suggestion or plan.
T guides Ss to pay attention to the structure of a proposal, telling them to separate different types of information to make it easy to read.
T: Besides paying attention to the text type, it is important to separate different types of information to make your proposal easy to read. After all, your purpose is to get the reader to agree to your suggestion or plan. Therefore, how you should structure your proposal really matters. Please refer to page 9, part B.
T leads Ss to pay attention to the language of a proposal: formal and concise
T: Finally, the language of the proposal is also important. Since a proposal is a formal suggestion or plan and the target reader of your proposal is your school principal, you should use formal language. Also, it should also be brief and concise, providing only the most important information.
4. T asks Ss a question: what are the features of formal language T then informs Ss of the features of formal language: being serious and objective, avoiding contractions and using relatively complex sentence structures.
Activity 2 Writing
Ss write their proposal.
T: Since we have planned well, now let’s write the proposal. Please refer to page 9, part B.
Activity 3 Checking
T asks Ss to figure out what mistakes they should pay attention to when checking the writing.
T: It is important to check your writing after you finish. What aspects should we pay attention to when checking the writing
T: Excellent! You are supposed to check if there are any mistakes in terms of punctuation, spelling, grammar, choice of words, style (formal/informal), structure.
2. T asks Ss to find mistakes in their own writing and correct them.
T: Find mistakes in your writing, and then correct them.
3. T asks Ss to make comments on each other’s writing, read the comments others make and improve their writing according to other’s comments.
T: It is a good idea to work in pairs to read and edit each other’s writing. During the process, you are supposed to give different types of comments, including praises, suggestions and corrections. Finally, pay attention to the comments your partner give on your writing and then improve your writing.
