Unit 2 Let’s talk teens
Welcome to the unit & Reading (I)（教學(xué)設(shè)計(jì)）
I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. appreciate and comment on two poems about parents’ love;
2. understand the organization of the magazine article;
3. analyze the causes of parent-child tensions;
4. build a positive attitude towards the adolescent stage of one’s life.

IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Appreciation and comparison
1. T leads Ss to appreciate the quote from Bing Xin and asks them to translate it in Chinese.
2. T encourages Ss to express their understanding of “home”.
3. T asks Ss to read an English poem about parents’ love and describe Mother Bird’s feelings
in the poem.
4. T shows Ss a Chinese poem in English and asks them to compare it with the first poem.
5. T asks Ss to express their opinions of parents’ unconditional love.
【設(shè)計(jì)意圖：引導(dǎo)學(xué)生通過(guò)翻譯、朗讀、理解、對(duì)比等活動(dòng)來(lái)欣賞名人名言和中外詩(shī)歌，體會(huì)其表達(dá)的共同情感和主題，為閱讀做鋪墊，同時(shí)也培養(yǎng)了學(xué)生良好的鑒賞能力以及比較文化異同的能力。】
Step 2 Prediction before reading
T leads Ss to focus on the title, pictures and the first paragraph of the magazine article and
think about the following questions:
How do you understand the title
What could be the theme of the article
Why does the writer use a group of questions to introduce the topic
What could be the genre of the article
Who could be the audience
What aspects will be talked about in the following paragraphs

Step 3 Reading for organization
T asks Ss to read the following paragraphs and complete the outline of the article in A1 on
page 18.
2. T leads Ss to analyze the structure of an argumentative essay:
In paragraph 1, the writer introduces the topic and states the focus of the essay.
In paragraphs 2 and 3, the writer analyzes the causes of parent-child tensions.
In paragraph 4, the writer comes up with some solutions to this problem.
In paragraph 5, the writer states his/her conclusion and shows his/her opinions about the topic.

Step 4 In-depth reading
1. T asks Ss to focus on paragraph 2 and answer the following questions:
What physical changes might teenagers worry about
Can you use one word or phrase to conclude teenagers’ worry
Which physical change troubles you most
How do you deal with it
【設(shè)計(jì)意圖：第二段內(nèi)容較為簡(jiǎn)單，結(jié)構(gòu)清晰，主要讓學(xué)生聯(lián)系自身實(shí)際談?wù)勄啻浩诘臒酪约按胧罨瘜?duì)語(yǔ)言的靈活運(yùn)用。】
2. T asks Ss to focus on paragraph 3 and answer the following questions:
What does “middle ground” refer to (T explains the function of the dash here.)
Do you know a special term for that period (T shows the new word “adolescence”.)
What inner conflicts may teenagers have (T leads Ss to find the sentence that best explains the inner conflicts.)
Where can we put the phrase “on the one hand” (T leads Ss to focus on the inner structure of this paragraph.)
【設(shè)計(jì)意圖：第三段內(nèi)容和結(jié)構(gòu)均較為復(fù)雜，主要通過(guò)梳理、分析、推斷等高階思維活動(dòng)，提升學(xué)生思維品質(zhì)。第一、第二兩個(gè)設(shè)問(wèn)可達(dá)到兩個(gè)目的：一是讓學(xué)生理解破折號(hào)的作用，二是通過(guò)追問(wèn)，讓學(xué)生在語(yǔ)境中學(xué)到adolescence和adolescent這兩個(gè)單詞。第三、第四兩個(gè)問(wèn)題，讓學(xué)生更好地把握段落結(jié)構(gòu)。】
3. T asks Ss to focus on paragraph 4.
T asks Ss to conclude the 4 steps of communication.

Step 5 Critical reading
1. T asks Ss to focus on paragraph 5 and answer the following questions:
What’s is the author’s attitude to parent-child tensions
Could you find some information in the magazine article to support your idea
What is the writing purpose of the magazine article
What do you think of the significance of healthy parent-child relationships in one’s life
【設(shè)計(jì)意圖：讓學(xué)生辨別作者的態(tài)度和寫(xiě)作目的，啟發(fā)學(xué)生對(duì)“健康親子關(guān)系”意義的思考，鼓勵(lì)學(xué)生創(chuàng)造性地表達(dá)自己的觀點(diǎn)，幫助了解“人與自我”“人與社會(huì)”的關(guān)系，從而建立健康的人生觀。】
2. T asks Ss to think about the following questions:
The writer suggests that teenagers want both independence and their parents’ love and support. Do you feel the same way Why or why not Give an example.
Cooperate with your praters and create a situation where you successfully solve the conflicts with your partners by following the writer’s advice.

V. Homework
Collect words or phrases related to parent-child tensions in the magazine article.
Choose one paragraph and analyze its structure.
Write a summary of the magazine article (within 60 words).
