What’s the meaning of challenge here A challenge is something new and difficult which requires great effort and determination. You can say your school life is full of challenges, or that your school life poses a challenge to you. Can you think of some other verbs that can be followed by challenge Think about the situation: if the workers are not paid on time, they will go on a strike. Can you translate the sentence: 罷工給政府帶來了嚴峻的挑戰。Collocations of challengeT: Since challenges do exist. People have to face them, right You can also take on or accept them. That means you are ready to deal with the challenges. Then if you can successfully deal with them, you are able to meet them or rise to them. Would you please read the following two sentences together Free talk: ask students to summarize different collocations of challenge and understand them in different contexts.Challenge as a verbT: Challenge can also be used as a verb. If you challenge someone, you invite them to fight or compete with you in some way.For example, 邁克要挑戰我跟我下棋。How do you translate it into English As we know, nowadays, the relationship between parents and children is not like that of many years ago. Children challenge their parents’ authority (權威) far more nowadays than they did in the past. Can you translate this sentence Another sentence: She challenged the newspaper to prove its story. Can you translate this sentence What’s the meaning of challenge here Word study: acquireIntroduce the meanings of acquire in different contexts.T: Have you got some skills from your parents That is to say, you’ve acquired some skills. The principal says when you rise to the challenges, you will have the opportunity to acquire great knowledge and enjoy personal growth. (para. 2) Acquire has two meanings: 1. to obtain sth by buying or being given it 2. (of skills or habits) to learn it or develop it through your daily life or experience.I have two examples for you. The company has just acquired lots of new equipment. How long will it take to acquire the necessary skills What’s the meaning of acquire in each sentence (2) Diction: acquire vs achieveAcquire and achieve seem similar to each other. Actually, they are quite different. Achieve means to successfully complete something or get a good result, especially by working hard. Then, what can you acquire and what can you achieve Pay attention to the sentence. What’s the meaning of acquisition This is the noun form of acquire.Word study: effortCreate concrete contexts to further understand effort and learn to write with the phrases related to effort.T: Since you are facing a lot of challenges in the high school, you have to work hard, right In other words, you are supposed to devote your effort to your schoolwork. Look at the sentence: I know you don’t like her, but please make an effort to be polite. Can you use your own words to tell us the meaning of effort In writing, we can use the following phrases: it takes effort to do sth, make effort to do sth, spare no effort to do sth. Read the sentence...Learn about the suffix -less in the word effortless.T: Can you give an adjective to describe needing no or little effort Would you translate the sentence Word study: advance(1) Ask students to explain the meaning of advance in the speech.T: You know, our society is developing fast. So, our country is ahead of others in a lot of fields . You, as the future of our country, will make great contributions. Who knows what beautiful works of art you will create, what medical advances you will make or what amazing technologies you will develop! (Para.3) Can you guess the meaning of advances Learn more collocations of advance.T: Besides medical advances, what other advances can you achieve T: Advance also has other usages. For example, their aircraft were in advance of those used by the US. The airline suggests booking tickets 21 days in advance. Do you know the meanings of these phrases Advance as a verbT: The ability to guess the meaning of a word according to the context is important. Would you guess the meaning of advance in the sentence We can see that in the sentences, advance is used as a verb. What’s the adjective form of advance 5. Word study: advantage (take advantage of)(1) Ss look up advantage in a dictionary and learn about its definition and usage.T: We know how to realize our potential is important. What can we do Using our school resources is a proper way. That is to say, take advantage of our classes, learn from our teachers and classmates, and make use of our school facilities. (Para. 4)We have several ways to express use something, for example...Advantage is an important word in the passage. Can you look up the word in the dictionary and find out the meanings of these phrases Ss practise using advantage in different situations.T: Great! Since you know something about the phrases, let’s practise using them.Word study: equalIntroduce the word equal in the context of the speech.T: We still have other ways to realize our potential. Of equal importance are good study habits, useful skills and a positive attitude. (Para. 5)Introduce the collocations of equal and make sentences.T: We have some phrases related to equal. Have you come across this phrase in some articles, be equal to It has two meanings.a. to have the ability to deal with a problem, a piece of work etc successfully. It is the same as be up to. Please translate:你能勝任這個工作嗎?b. to be as good as something else這個雕塑可以與世界上任何的雕塑相媲美。Can you translate this sentence Word study: balanceUnderstand the word balance in the speech.T: Another way is to carefully plan your study, set clear goals and balance your schoolwork with other activities. (para. 5) Balance means to give equal importance to two contrasting things or parts of sth.Introduce another important meaning of balance.T: Let’s look at another sentence. Job losses in manufacturing were balanced by job increases in the service sector. Can you translate it What does balance mean in this sentence Here it means to be equal in importance, amount, value, or effect to something that has the opposite effect.Balance as a noun and its collocationsT: If you can’t keep your balance, you will lose your balance and you’ll try to recover/regain your balance. Read the examples and appreciate the usage of balance.Word study: responsible(1) Understand the word responsible in the speech.T: In the last paragraph, the principal makes a conclusion. Senior high school will help you learn and grow, yet you alone are responsible for realizing your great potential. (para. 6) You are supposed to be responsible for yourself and your future. Here be responsible for means having the job or duty of doing sth or taking care of sb or sth, so that you may be blamed if sth goes wrong. Here is another example . Police believe that the same man is responsible for three other murders in the area. If someone is responsible for an accident, mistake, crime, etc., it is their fault or they can be blamed.(2) Learn about different uses of responsible and make sentences.T: Look at these two expressions.
