【參考范文】
Dear Chris,
Last Friday, our class organized an event named “Reading A Book Together”, which was fueled by a shared
passion for literature and a desire to connect with our classmates.
During the event, we took turns to discuss the engaging plot, underlying themes and complex character
relationships of the collectively-chosen book Great Expectations. It was fascinating to hear diverse perspectives! This
experience significantly deepened my appreciation for literature. I particularly enjoyed the sharing of various
perspectives on character analysis, which enabled me to critically appreciate the classic work. Most importantly, the
relaxing exchange boosted my confidence in voicing my own insights.
If you were here, you would love it too. I hope we have the chance to read a book together. Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

【參考范文】
That night when I went to bed, I felt sor ry for myself. I felt like I didn’t belong. Our family had trouble
finding money for rent, food, and clothes in the new country—the idea of writing silly messages on blank pages seemed
useless. Yet for a moment, I wanted to be included—I wanted to go to camp. I wanted an autograph book. Thinking
about my uncertain future life in this new place and wondering how things would work out for my family, I sighed.
The next day, the boy sitting beside me whispered he wanted to give me something at break. During break,
he handed me a small box with a big smile, inside which was a book with multicolored pages—an autograph book-—
just like everyone else’s. I turned the pages. Then, in the middle of the autograph book I saw some writing: Roses are
red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so are you. Welcome to your new country. You are going to like it here. Your
friend Sam. I turned the other pages—blue, pink, yellow… thinking what my future held in store may change for the
better and things might work out for my family.

Elizabeth Keyton, originally from Georgia, the USA, married Arjun, a Malayali. She wanted to learn his mother tongue
to strengthen their family bond. In the process, she created an Instagram page called “Elikutty” through which she now teaches
Malayalam to thousands of people.
“I always loved hearing people speak different languages, but when my mother from Serbia spoke Serbian at home, my
father showed no interest in learning it, leaving frequent misunderstanding and communicating problems. That’s when I
decided that if I met someone from a different culture, I would try to learn his language, which would be good for us and our
family,” says Elizabeth to The Better India.

“So when my relationship with Arjun started looking serious because of difficulties in communicating, I decided to learn
Malayalam. However, I found that there weren’t enough resources to learn the language. Most books available were outdated
or made for children. A small amount of material was often too difficult for casual (非正式的) language learners like me,” says
the 35-year-old. “Later, I struggled to find a teacher suited to my needs and some grammar resources online.”
As an English teacher, Elizabeth used her teaching skills to learn Malayalam. She wrote notes and made doodles (涂鴉)
to learn the letters. “For me, the best way to learn is by explaining it to someone else, so I made an Instagram page in 2018 to
share my notes and small drawings,” she says. Starting out with 1,000 followers in 2018, her Instagram page has over 70,000
followers today. She is pleased to make learning Malayalam fun and easy.
“I have seen what happens when languages are ignored in my own house. My brother doesn’t know Serbian, which
means his family won’t. It’s important to know English as it is a global language and helps when you go abroad, but the same
respect should be given to native languages. They are the true way to a person’s heart.” says Elizabeth.
24.Why did Elizabeth decide to learn Malayalam
A.To build a foundation for her career.
B.To improve her relationship with Arjun.
C.To better communicate with her mother.
D.To satisfy her interest in foreign languages.
25.What difficulty did Elizabeth meet during her learning
A.Rejection from her husband. B.Failure to find a native partner.
C.Lack of suitable learning resources. D.Inability to find a professional teacher.
26.What was Elizabeth’s Instagram. page used to do at first
A.Collect learning tips. B.Assist her in self-study.
C.Practice small drawings. D.Teach others Malayalam.
27.What is Elizabeth’s opinion on language learning
A.Using social media as the primary tool.
B.Respecting our inner thinking at all times.
C.Always putting the family’s common language first.
D.Treating official languages and mother tongues equally.

Enlightening, challenging, stimulating, fun. These were some of the words that Nature readers used to describe their
experiences of art-science collaborations in a series of articles on partnerships between artists and researchers. Nearly 40% of
the roughly 350 people who responded to an accompanying poll, said they had collaborated with artists; and almost all said
they would consider doing so in future.
Such an encouraging result is not surprising. Scientists are increasingly seeking out visual artists to help them
communicate their work to new audiences. “Artists help scientists reach a broader audience and make emotional connections
that enhance learning,” one respondent said.
One example of how artists and scientists have together rocked the scenes came last month when the Sydney Symphony
Orchestra performed a reworked version of Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. They reimagined the 300-year-old score by

injecting the latest climate prediction data for each season-provided by Monash University’s Climate Change Communication
Research Hub. The performance was a creative call to action ahead of November’s United Nations Climate Change Conference
in Glasgow, UK.
But a genuine partnership must be a two-way street. Fewer artists than scientists responded to the Nature poll; however,
several respondents noted that artists do not simply assist scientists with their communication requirements. Nor should their
work be considered only as an object of study. The alliances are most valuable when scientists and artists have a shared interest
in a project, are able to jointly design it and can critique each other’s work. Such an approach can both prompt new research as
well as result in powerful art.
More than half a century ago, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology opened its Center for Advanced Visual Studies
(CAVS) to explore the role of technology in culture. The founders deliberately focused their projects around light—hence
the"visual studies"in the name. Light was something that both artists and scientists had an interest in, and therefore could form
the basis of collaboration. As science and technology progressed, and divided into more sub-disciplines, the centre was
simultaneously (同時地) looking to a time when leading researchers could also be artists, writers and poets, and vice versa.
Nature’s poll findings suggest that this trend is as strong as ever, but, to make a collaboration work, both sides need to
invest time, and embrace surprise and challenge. The reach of art-science tie-ups needs to go beyond the necessary purpose of
research communication, and participant must not fall into the trap of stereotyping (對…產生成見 ) each other. Artists and
scientists alike are immersed in discovery and invention, and challenge and critique are core to both, too.
28.According to Paragraph 1, art-science collaborations have ________.
A.caught the attention of critics B.received favorable responses
C.promoted academic publishing D.sparked heated public controversy
29.The reworked version of The Four Seasons is mentioned to show that ________.
A.art can offer audiences easy access to science

C.should do more than communicating science

The danger of a major solar storm is now at its highest in over a decade As the Sun reaches the peak of its activity cycle,
the odds of such a storm hitting Earth rise along with its associated risks, including blackouts, disabled satellites and damaged
cell phones and GPS networks. In the most extreme scenarios, some power grids could be knocked out for weeks or even
months.

But that is the worst case. In the face of such potential disaster, our best hope is to learn more about the Sun-Earth
system, monitor solar activity and develop our ability to predict space weather. With the right precautions, solar activity could
be a net positive for humanity, as it constantly protects us against harmful radiation from beyond the Solar System So whether
we risk the dangers or reap the benefits of living with the Sun will come down to the same thing: our ability to predict and
prepare for what our star is going to do next.
The whole prediction process is like forecasting normal weather the more you understand the system, the better you can
predict what it will do. This is no easy task when it comes to our star. The Sun is complex and not yet well understood, and
scientists must also get a better handle on how its emissions travel through space and affect pared to forecasting the
normal weather, our space weather predictions are about 50 years behind
That’s why missions like the Parker Solar Probe - the first spacecraft ever to touch the Sun-are all the more important.
Launched in 2018, Parker has already made several discoveries about how the Sun transports energy outward into space. The
spacecraft’s data have helped scientists improve their ability to predict exactly when an event at the Sun will later reach Earth.
Establishing that timing is important, because it’s an essential first step to an early warning system that would help avoid the
worst-case scenario.
Yet our current projects are not enough. Parker is not designed to act as a full-time warming system, and it can only
study the Sun from one angle at a time. So a constellation of satellites around the Sun are recommended to completely monitor
the Sun and always be ready to send warnings back to Earth.
32.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word!
A.obtain B.eliminate C.strengthen D.tolerate
33.Which of the following is mentioned in paragraph 2
A.The solar system releases a lot of harmful radiation to humanity.
B.People must learn more to reverse the worst result caused by the Sun.
C.Solar activities, if dealt with properly, can be very beneficial to humanity.
D.The potential disaster can be fully prevented if we make accurate prediction.
34.What is the main message conveyed in the passage
A.Improving space weather predictions is crucial for preparedness.
B.The Sun’s energy transport mechanisms have been fully understood.
C.The frequency of solar storms has significantly increased over the past decade.
D.A full-time warning system is the only solution to preventing solar storm impacts.
35.What will the following paragraphs probably talk about
A.The sunny sides of space weather and solar activities
B.The drawback of the current solar prediction projects.
C.The ways to protect the Earth from potential solar storms.
D.The measures to improve and redesign the Parker Solar Probe.

Rejection creates an emotional roller coaster. We feel the sadness, anger, and loss of the person who rejects us, and also
our self-respect is hurt. 36 While there is no quick fix, the following suggestions can help you overcome the confusion and
ease the pain of rejection.
37 People tend to avoid their pain. There is no healing without feeling your feelings. There is no healing without pain.
You must go through the feelings to heal. Let yourself feel the loss and the pain and express your difficult emotions. You
should know that you are strong enough and can face pain with courage to heal and grow.
Take it one moment at a time. It takes time to heal and for the hurt to lessen. In the abyss (深淵), it is hard to think too
far, so be patient during this difficult period. Unfortunately, today, we live in the fast lane. We don’t have patience and we want
things to happen immediately. Patience is a lost art. 38
Develop gratitude. Gratitude is cure for pain. Pain is about what we are missing. Gratitude is about what we are having.
If we focus on the negative, we will see the negatives. 39 Those who show gratitude, develop a positive attitude, and
appreciate their situation minimize their pain and create more happy moments in their lives.
Getting over a rejection is hard. 40 It is there to make you grow. Everyone heals from rejection at their own pace in
their own way. We must sympathize with ourselves and accept that reality. It’s important to take your time to deal with
rejection and to use the practices suggested to heal and move on to the new opportunities life presents us. It won’t be easy, but
it will be worth it.
A.Feel it to heal it.
B.Don’t take it too personally.
C.However, your pain won’t last forever.
D.So, even if you are broken, keep busy.
E.With time, the sense of loss and hurt will ease.
F.This is why getting over a rejection is challenging.
G.If we focus on the positive, we will see the positives.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and night markets, two 56 (seem) unrelated things, have recently become a
trending combination 57 (chase) after by young people in China.
Instead of taking place in hospitals or clinics during office hours, consultations, prescriptions, acupuncture, and dietary
advice offered by certified TCM doctors in the busy atmosphere of night markets 58 (attract) a significant number of
young people so far.
Young people may not have time to visit hospitals during the day due to work 59 (commit), so this trend has
quickly caught their attention. In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, young people’s awareness of health and wellness is gradually
increasing 60 this form of night markets caters to their health needs. Besides, the night market environment is 61

Roses are red, violets are blue,

Those words were what one of my new classmates wrote to me in an autograph book (簽名簿) when I moved with my
family to a new country, feeling extremely lonely.
Having settled in a completely unfamiliar place, my father and mother worked day and night to provide for the family,
though we were still in debt. I spoke a little English and was sent to a public school. Being ten years old, I was placed in the
fourth grade. Some of the children in the class tried to be friendly but I didn’t have time to hang around with them after my
lessons because I had to help with the housework and look after my little brothers and sisters.
At the end of the school year all the kids were excited about going to camp, a concept that was quite foreign to me. Also
foreign to me were some of the customs the children had. The strangest one was the “autograph book”! It was a blank book,
about four by six inches, with pages in different colors. My schoolmates exchanged their autograph books with each other and
wrote silly messages on the pages. These messages made no sense to me: “Yours till the kitchen sinks.” “Yours till the horse
flies.” “Yours till Niagara falls.”(永遠屬于你 ) Teachers and older relatives wrote more serious and practical words like a
prayer or wish—I remember something about a “wise owl living in a tree” (少說話多做事的人).
The boy whose desk was next to mine asked me to write a few words in his autograph book. I didn’t know what to say,
so I just signed my name. Then he asked if he could write in my autograph book. I explained I didn’t have one, embarrassed
and upset.
