“Without
music, life would be a mistake, ”
famous German philosopher(哲學家) Friedrich Nietzsche said over a century ago. Music is a big part of our daily lives. But in recent years, some US schools have cut Music classes
to control budgets(預算).
For example, Chicago
public schools hurt arts education when it fired over 1, 000 teachers. Among them, 10 per cent
of the teachers taught Art or Music, according to TheWashingtonTimes. In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, such as China and the UK, Music classes
are not thought to be as important as ones like Science, Maths and History. That's partly because music is not seen as a very important
life skill, and it isn't tested. Many
students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus on(關注) subjects that are tested more often.
However, learning
music is beneficial(有益的) in
many ways.
When playing music,
you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth
Guilmartin of MusicTogether, an early childhood music
development programme. For example,
when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode(解碼) them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time.
Music has a special
connection with science as well. You
can see that many scientists are good at playing music: Einstein played the
violin, and German physicist Max Planck was talented in playing the piano.
49.Some schools in the US have cut Music classes because ▲ .
A.students in the US weren't interested in music
B.they were too difficult to learn
C.there weren't enough music teachers in the US
D.the schools wanted to control budgets
50.The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refers to “ ▲ ”.
A.public schools B.fired teachers
C.parents in Chicago D.students in Chicago
51.How many scientists who are good at playing music are mentioned in this passage
A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.

calls and messages help us get in touch with others. It means that we seldom write letters now. But a TV show, LettersAlive(《見字如面》), is bringing back this old habit.

younger brother in 1941. The letter

future.

letter opens another world for us, ”
according to Guan Zhengwen, the director of the TV show. “We can also touch the heart of the writers'. ” Since its first period on December 5, LettersAlive has been
widely praised. Many
audiences said that it had provided a breath of fresh air to today's TV shows.
Besides LettersAlive, some other cultural TV shows have also been well received by
Chinese audience. ChinesePoetryConference is a traditional Chinese poetry competition. And Readers invites
people to read poems and articles they like or wrote. It suggests that cultural values and true feelings are
becoming our interest.

When
Oliver arrived in this hard world, it was very doubtful whether he would live
beyond the first three minutes. He lay on a hard little bed and struggled (斗爭)to start breathing (呼吸).
Oliver
fought his first battle without much help from the two people present at his
birth. One was an old woman, who was nearly always drunk, and the other was a
busy local doctor, who was not paid enough to be very interested in Oliver's
survival.
However,
Oliver managed to draw his first breath, and then announced (宣布) his arrival by crying loudly. His mother raised her
pale young face and whispered, "Let me see it. "
The
doctor turned away from the fire, where he had been warming his hands. He gave
her the child. Lovingly, she kissed the baby with her cold white lips, then
stared wildly around the room, fell back—and died.
The
doctor began to put on his coat. The mother was a good-looking girl. "Where
did she come from "
"She
was brought here last night, " replied the old woman. "She was found
lying in the street. Where she came from, or what her name was, nobody knows. "
The
doctor lifted the girl's left hand. "The old story, " he shook his
head. "No wedding ring, I see. Ah! Good night. "
And
so Oliver was left with only the drunken nurse. He was then sent to a special "baby
farm" nearby. There, he and thirty other children rolled (翻滾) around the floor all day, without the
inconvenience (不便) of too much food or too much clothing. Mrs. Mann, who "looked after" them, was very
experienced. She knew what was good for children. She also knew what was good
for herself. The board ( 董事會)
responsible (負責的) for
the orphans (孤兒)
sometimes checked on the health of the children, but they always sent Mr. Bumble,
a kind local policeman, to announce their visit the day before. So whenever the
board arrived, of course, the children were always neat and clean.
On
Oliver's ninth birthday, Mr. Bumble came to see Mrs. Mann. Through the front
window, Mrs. Mann saw him at the gate, and turned quickly to the girl who
worked with her.
"Quick!
Take Oliver and those others upstairs to be washed!" she said. Then she
ran out to unlock the gate which was always kept locked.

第二節 (共5小題;每小題1分,滿分5分)
閱讀下面短文,從短文后的選項中選出可以填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。
Is there a connection between music and language?According to recent studies, the answer is yes: 61 Here, we look at two examples.
A recent study by researcher Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person's hearing ability. 62 The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.
63 Think about violinists in an orchestra(管弦樂隊). When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and pay no attention to the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.
Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke(中風) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. 64 Why does this work?Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, including the damaged(損壞的) parts. This might help patients use that part of the brain again.
Music improves concentration(注意力), memory, listening skills, and our overall language abilities. 65 Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp(敏銳的) as we get older. Music is not only enjoyable but also good for us in many other ways.
A. It can even help sick people get better. B. Music helps people solve some hearing problems. C. Music improves certain language abilities in the brain. D. The violinists develop their memories by playing the violin. E. Musicians hear better because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. F. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak. G. In his study two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room.
