NHL
Founded in 1917, the National Hockey League is the second-oldest sports league in the US and Canada and consists of a total of 32 teams. Three of the best performing teams from each division make it to the playoffs plus two wild card teams. All teams compete to win the prestigious Stanley Cup. Thirteen years ago, Ava Kaufman was fighting for her life. Now, thanks to a donor heart and successful organ transplant, she’s alive — and saving others.
“My life changed on a dime.” said Kaufman, who was a professional dancer and black belt in taekwondo(跆拳道) when an autoimmune disease went undiagnosed and she ended up on life support in intensive care with organ failure. On her birthday in 2009, she received a new heart and promised God if she could live to raise her young daughter, she would do everything she could to give back. Today, Kaufman is doing just that.
Kaufman started her non-profit, Ava’s Heart. She and her organization offer transplant patients services that are often not covered by insurance, including food, gas, and housing. She found out that patients often must show financial security and be able to afford transportation and housing near their transplant hospital to get listed. And for some patients hoping to receive a transplant in a big city like Los Angeles, where rents are high and hotels are expensive, the cost alone could be a barrier.
Kaufman runs two housing locations where she houses up to five transplant patients and their families at a time, at no cost, after their surgery. This allows them to remain close to their transplant hospital for the duration of their aftercare. Since she started, Kaufman has helped about 175 people with post-transplant housing, and about 150 more with support services and financial assistance.
At 72, Kaufman works out every day and has no plans to slow down. "I feel like I was chosen to do this," she said. "When I made a promise to God, I didn’t know what it was going to be, but it turned out to be my non-profit, Ava’s Heart."
24. What left Kaufman’s life in danger
A. A heart from a donor.
B. An undiagnosed disease.
C. An organ transplant.
D. A promise to God.
25. What does the underlined phrase "on a dime" in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Immediately.
B. Slightly.
C. Frequently
D. Occasionally.
26. What can we infer about Ava’s Heart
A. It has offered housing to 175 patients after their transplant surgeries.
B. It plans to slow down because no profit can be made from the patients.
C. It was started by Kaufman to help the transplant patients with insurance.
D. It makes a great difference to the patients who can’t afford the cost.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. A Woman Fighting for Life.
B. Never Lose Heart in Future.
C. Home is Where the Heart is.
D. Heart Donation to Those in Need.

Today when it comes to the use of digital(數碼的) technology, girls have less basic education, leaving them far behind boys. And because the world is more digital, those who lack(缺少) basic internet skills will find it more difficult to take part in the formal economy(經濟), to get a quality education, and to have their voices heard.
Since 2013 the global gender gap(性別差異)in male and female about the Internet has actually increased from 11 to 12 percent. Worse yet, women and girls living in the poorest countries are 31 percent less likely than men and boys to surf the Internet. In developing countries, some 200 million fewer women than men own a mobile phone, the most common means of surfing the internet there. This digital divide is increasing, and if it continues at the present pace, it is predicted that over 75 percent of women and girls will lack internet access(進入) and digital skills.
There are many causes of the digital gender gap. They include girls' exclusion(排斥) from basic education, from specific technology education and high costs of mobile phones and internet access.
Indeed, one of the so-called reasons why girls may be discouraged from learning how to access and use digital technology is also a groundless(毫無根據的) one: that girls are simply not good at using technology.
Without the help of the government, most of the benefits of technological change will be enjoyed only by men, making gender inequality even more serious.
28. What can we know from paragraph 1
A. Girls usually don't like to share their ideas.
B. Girls don't have enough digital knowledge.
C. Boys are more interested in making money.
D. Boys may always receive advanced education.
29. How does the writer make his statement in paragraph 2
A. By listing numbers.
B. By giving reasons.
C. By following time order.
D. By giving examples.
30. What is the writer's attitude to the idea that girls are simply not good at using technology
A. Positive.
B. Acceptable.
C. Negative.
D. Unclear.
31. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Girls are lacking in education.
B. Women suffer a lot from poor economy.
C. Internet continues to develop fast and fast.
D. Girls are at a disadvantage compared with boys in digital technology.

Have you ever seen the Moon rising over your town or city It can appear very large when it is low on the horizon. Our moon goes through phases(月相) and it looks a little different every day. When the whole moon is lit up, it is called a full moon. When the Moon is entirely dark, it’s a new moon. When there is only a thin edge of the circle shining, it’s a crescent moon.
When a crescent moon is rising, we can occasionally see a unique event. When the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon are lined up just right, some of the sunlight that hits the Earth can be reflected onto the Moon. This causes most part of the Moon to give off a faint glow, while the rest of the Moon is brightly lit by the sunlight.
This phenomenon is named the Da Vinci glow. It was Leonardo da Vinci, a great artist, inventor and scientist, who explained it for the first time. Sometimes, it is also called “earthshine.”
When Da Vinci wrote about earthshine he suggested that it might be caused by sunlight reflected from the Earth’s oceans. He was almost completely correct, except for one detail: most of the reflected sunlight comes from the clouds in our atmosphere. The reflected light from the Earth is bright enough to light up the side of the Moon that isn’t receiving direct sunlight.
The Da Vinci glow is not easy to see. Conditions need to be just right. Due to the angles of light, the Moon has to be very low on the horizon. The best time to see it will be in the days before and after the new moon. During these days, the lit-up edge of the crescent moon is at its thinnest stage. If you observe the Moon before sunrise or after sunset, it may be possible to witness the reflected light from the Earth. For the best experience, choose a location outdoors where there is not too much artificial light. You can use a telescope, but it’s not necessary since the Moon will look just as impressive when viewed with the bare eye.
32. Which of the following is the Da Vinci glow
A. B. C. D.
33. What is the main cause of the Da Vinci glow
A. Sunlight received by the Moon’s surface.
B. Sunlight reflected from the Earth’s clouds.
C. Sunlight reflected from the Earth’s oceans.
D. Sunlight received by the Moon’s lit-up edge.
34. Why is the Da Vinci glow an unusual phenomenon
A It requires specific light conditions. B. It lasts too short to be observed.
C. It occurs at the crescent moon stage. D. It needs bright light from the Sun.
35. Which of the following matters most to an ideal observation of the phenomenon
A. A suitable place. B. Good eyesight.
C. A special instrument. D. Bright moonlight.

Most boys coming to our ranch (大牧場) were living around animals for the first time. Sent by educational systems, they were boys in trouble; they had no family, lacked love, often broke the rules, and were lonely. Our ranch created a “boy-horse communication program” for them, hoping to heal their broken spirits and help them behave well through their communication with horses. I was the program’s head.
15-year-old Martin was a new arrival. He appeared cold and easily angry and had no experience with horses. He seemed to consider a horse only a vehicle for speed and thrills. He always pushed his way to the front of the line every day, knocking down smaller children to get on the horse. And then he started moving fast. We tried to communicate with him, but he only cared about his excitement.
One morning, when I was upset about Martin’s behavior in my office, one worker told me that a female horse was ill. Then, I ran to its stable (馬), and within an hour she was dead. We felt sad about her and also concerned about the young baby she had recently delivered (分娩). The baby horse’s first need was to be fed.
We prepared some milk in a bottle and offered it to her. But she wouldn’t accept the bottle. We had to put our hands in the milk and let her suck (吮吸) the milk off our fingers. It was a painfully slow method of feeding, but we had no choice if we wanted the baby horse to survive.
At that moment, Martin finished his daily riding and found us. Pushing his way through the crowd of kids who were watching us feed the baby horse, he got to the front, shouting, “I want to feed it!”
After I showed Martin how to do it, he put his hand in the milk and then put his fingers towards the horse’s mouth. When the baby horse closed her mouth around his fingers, Martin was surprised and drew back, shouting, “Hey, it bit me!” But knowing the little horse wanted more food, he immediately re-wet his hand.
注意:續寫詞數應為150詞左右;
And he gently put his fingers near her mouth. _________________________________________

第四部分 寫作
第一節
答案:
Dear Chris,
Knowing that you're interested in table tennis in China, I am writing to recommend the sport to you.
Table tennis is highly popular in China, enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. You can find table tennis tables in many places like parks, schools and residential areas. Deeply rooted in Chinese culture, it has been a national pastime for decades. I highly recommend table tennis for two reasons. For one thing, it's a social sport that not only brings people together but also strengthens bonds through friendly competition and teamwork. For another, it's easy to learn and doesn't require expensive equipment, making it accessible to everyone.
If you're looking for a fun and engaging sport that promotes fitness and social interaction, table tennis is a perfect choice.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
And he gently put his fingers near her mouth. Again the horse sucked greedily. This time, Martin’s face relaxed into a smile of pure pleasure. Again and again, he put his hand in the milk and gave it to the horse. “She’s so hungry,” he said softly. Eventually, the horse had enough milk and fell into a deep sleep. “What happened to her ” Martin asked me. I told him that she had lost her mom and needed someone to care for her. Then we talked about how it felt to lose a mother.
Paragraph 2:
Watching the horse sleep, Martin cried, "I’ll be her mom and care for her." Touched, I nodded. He came every day to feed the baby horse and clean her stable. He brushed her and played with her. They had a wild game where they took turns chasing each other, bringing fun and love to each other. Gradually, Martin’s eyes had more tenderness, and he began caring for little boys there, teaching them to ride horses. I was glad about Martin’s change. And this was just one story here that showed how our program could heal a broken spirit.

W: All right. Let me show you something darker then. How about this suit
M: The material is quite nice, but it seems a little tight in the collar.
W: Hmm, please try on this jacket. I think the design is better, and the color is suitable for you.
M: Yes, that’s wonderful. I like it so much.

W: You look a bit tired, Ted.
M: Well, we just moved into a new apartment last weekend. And we’ve been unpacking and cleaning.
W: Oh, that can be tiring.
M: Yes, especially since I work all day, and Mary’s in school full-time now.
W: Doesn’t your wife work at a bank
M: She did, but she was accepted this fall at Harvard, so she’s taking some time off to get a master’s degree.
W: Good for her.
M: By the way, do you know of anyone who does repair work We’re looking for someone to repair our kitchen and bathroom. I hope the cost is reasonable.
W: I’ve got a friend who is a good repairman. He’d be able to do a super job on your apartment.
M: Oh, I’d really like to talk to him.
W: I’m not sure if he can do it right away, though. But I will give you his number, and you can give him a call yourself.
M: Thanks. It’s certainly worth a try, and if he can’t do it himself, he can put me in touch with someone who can.

Welcome to our university. Here is some information that may be useful to you. The Student Welfare Office is normally open from 4 pm till 8 pm, Monday to Friday. Today and tomorrow, it will be open from about 9 am. If you have any problems, the teachers and volunteers there will help you. We also give out university identity cards that you will need to join the library. And they will allow you to get discounts at a number of local shops and places of entertainment, such as clubs and cinemas.
On Monday and Tuesday of next week, second-year students will be running a book sale in the canteen from 10 am to 3 pm. Many of the books on your first-year reading list will be available, and we suggest you should look there first before spending too much on new books.
The university canteen opens from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm, selling hot meals, fairly cheap. There is a basic cookery course starting next week. If you don’t know how to boil an egg, this is for you. It’s always full, so get your name on the list in the Welfare Office now!
