I'm quite willing to share what I value most with you.
A letter from my sister, a student of Peking University, has been kept by me for a long time, which is regarded as the most valuable thing to me.In the letter, she told me something interesting about her life, her friends and her classes in the college. It drew my great interest as well as my admiration for her. What's more, she encouraged me to study harder and set the goal to be an excellent student. After reading her letter, I was truly inspired.
In short, this letter gives me warmth and the yearning for a better life. Every time I think about it, I feel warm in my heart.
As for my most valuable thing, I'd like to say it is a book.
Last year, while practicing for a long-distance running race, I often got so tired that I often failed to make it to the finishing line, which made me so upset. Knowing my worries, my mother showed me a book called The Old Man and The Sea and encouraged me to read a few pages every day. From the book, I got to know the value of life lies in action itself. Being greatly inspired, I decided to stick at running. Since then, the book has always been on my side.2024年下學期八年級12月作業(yè)檢測 2024.12

Sarah often helped out at her dad's restaurant, but today felt different — she was given the work of serving
customers. Excited but worried, she carefully carried a dish to Table 6. Her excitement quickly turned to anxiety(焦
慮) when she saw Kassy, a popular girl from school, sitting there with her friends. Feeling shy and afraid, Sarah hid
behind the front desk to not being seen.

Kassy made fun of her and worried that others might do the same to her for working at a restaurant. When Sarah's
dad found her hiding, she didn't know what to say. He suggested that she take a break.
Turning back to the kitchen, Sarah felt bad for letting her dad down. To her surprise, Hannah, one of Kassy's
friends, came over and said that she knew how unfriendly Kassy could be. She also praised(表揚) Sarah for her
hard work. Her comfort gave Sarah the confidence she needed.
With confidence, Sarah came to Kassy's table. When Kassy tried to make fun of her, Sarah and Hannah did a
silly “crab dance” and laughed together. As she crossed the dining room, Sarah realized she didn't feel unhappy.
Whether(是否) Kassy liked her family's restaurant or not, it didn't matter.

①What will you do if your friends are having a bad day You might reach out to them and try your best to make
them feel better, right Believe it or not, elephants can do the same thing.
②Some scientists studied 26 elephants between the ages of 3 and 60 years old at the Elephant Nature Park in
Thailand. They spent twelve months watching these elephants carefully. They find that elephants can tell when
their friends are unhappy. They even try to make their friends happy. For example, when some elephants feel
unhappy, the others in the family group always try to give them friendly touches. They do it by putting their long,
big trunks (象鼻) in each other’s mouths. It seems to be a way of saying, “I’m here to help you.” Nearby elephants
also make some special noise to calm them down. Sometimes they just stand close to their friends.
③Scientists also noticed something else. Elephants have feelings like us. They never leave their weak family
members behind. When one elephant is hurt, the stronger elephants in the family group always go to take care of
him.
④The scientists were surprised by the study. They had never expected (預料) that elephants cared about each
other so much. Whether elephants are sick or unhappy, they are never left alone. There is always a friend there for
them. Only a few animals can do that.
