應用文
Dear Li Hua,
I’m very pleased to hear from you and I really appreciate your help during my trip to China. Hearing that you are going to travel to Canada during the summer holiday, I’d like to introduce Canada to you briefly.
Located in the northern hemisphere, Canada is a beautiful country which surely owns many diverse tourist attractions, ranging from mountains to valleys. In Canada, most of the region is English-speaking, but it is worth paying attention to that some provinces are French-speaking, so the locals may not understand English. Because of the cultural diversity in Canada, it is easy for you to taste a variety of delicious food.
Hope you can find my introduction valuable and I suggest you take the time to do a detailed travel strategy before your trip. Looking forward to your coming to Canada!
Yours,
Mike

“The most important is that you’re both alive. I forgive you and Hannah will too.” she said. I still couldn’t forgive myself for the harm caused to Hannah, trapped in deep self-accusation and regret. Aware of my desperation, Sharon took me in her arms, patting me on the back. I plucked up enough courage to request her to take me to Hannah’s ward. Seeing me getting close to her bed on the wheelchair pushed by her mother, Hannah asked eagerly, “Are you all right ” Tears of joy and relief poured down our cheeks.
Sharon’s forgiveness allowed Hannah and me to return to our normal life. We got back to be in the car together that summer, to stay friends throughout high school and college, to be in each other’s weddings, and to watch my four teenagers fawn over her three younger children. I think of her gift of forgiveness every time I’m tempted to resent someone for a perceived wrong. The scars are so faded that no one else would notice, but in the sunlight I can still see the faint shimmer just below her hairline—for me, an imprint of grace.江蘇省啟東中學2024~2025學年度第一學期第二次月考

Thomas Dambo, an environmental artist in Denmark, thinks big. In 2010, he started his first large-scale project: building birdhouses. He and his crew ended up creating 4,000 of them. Now he makes giant trolls(巨怪). So far, 59 trolls can be found at locations all around the world.
His creations are made entirely from items people have thrown away, such as discarded wooden pallets, old fencing, and broken sheds. It’s important to him that he doesn’t add to the growing landfills(垃圾填埋場)on our planet. He thinks of discarded items as art supplies and a source of inspiration.
As a kid, Thomas wanted to build all sorts of things, from a skateboard ramp(坡道)to a tree house in his backyard. He had lots of energy and creativity. The problem was that a kid doesn’t have the money to purchase supplies. He started to bike around the neighborhood looking for discarded wood, rope, and other items to create things.
In 7th grade, a girl in his class gave him a good piece of advice. She told him that he should take a different route each day to experience something new. Thomas took her idea and learned all about his city of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Today, Thomas still uses this idea of taking different routes as he searches for trash left out on curbs. Items such as wire, ropes, wooden pallets, metal, old chair rollers, and plastic containers are just waiting for him to think of a way to use them. If the items are small, he uses “Tingfinder,” his bicycle with a cart attached, to take home his “treasures”. He uses a truck for the larger items.
“My advice is to think about what you really love to do and let that guide you. Keep moving in the direction you’d like to go.” said Thomas.
24. Why does Thomas prefer to use discarded items for his art
A. They are cheaper than new materials. B. They are more useful and attractive.
C. He wants to reduce waste. D. He can find them more easily.
25. What advice did a girl in Thomas’s class give
A. Save money by using second-hand supplies.
B. Explore new paths to discover something fresh.
C. Focus on different ways to create things.
D. Learn about his city before starting any project.
26. Which word can best describe Thomas
A. Adventurous and curious. B. Childish but imaginative.
C. Changeable but hard-working. D. Responsible and creative.
27. What may be the best title for the passage
A. Sculpture: a unique hobby B. Trolls: a childhood dream
C. Recycling: a creative journey D. Bicycling: an inspiring sport

During a 2006 visit to Hudson’s Hope in northern British Columbia, my husband George went flying with a friend, curious to see the landmass beneath his feet from another perspective. They flew over the town of Hudson’s Hope, the Bennett Dam and the Peace River, taking photos as they went. At one point, the pilot told George to take a good look below, where he noted what looked to be large circles carved(刻)into the ground.
“UFO site ” George asked playfully.
“No, but after our flight, I’ll show you an article in the local newspaper on this particular project,” the pilot answered.
The article explained that in 1999 an artist named Deryk Houston made a journey to Baghdad to see the suffering that war had brought to the people of Iraq, which set him on a course to become an artist who uses the earth as his canvas and peace as his inspiration. Upon his return to Peace River Country, he, along with his son, Sam, and volunteer Phil Kirtzinger, constructed a series of concentric circles made of sand, gravel and hay. Symbolic renderings(藝術表達)of a mother and her child were created at the center of the work. Deryk’s hope was that the site would become a permanent sanctuary(永久的圣地)of peace, a place to visit for people searching for spiritual renewal, new hope or just a few precious moments of inner peace.
With most of us here being safe and sound in our own environments, and relatively ignorant of what’s going on in far-away, war-torn countries, how often do we stop to think about the loss of a child or a mother’s struggle to find the necessities of life in the midst of chaos(混亂) We only come face to face with the facts when they are brought to our attention in a meaningful way. Such was the effect that Deryk’s work had on both my husband and me. While few of us have the talent to create such a monumental tribute(不朽的贊歌)to peace, we can draw inspiration from people like Deryk and do our part, in our own way, to help the cause.
28.What happened during George’s visit to Hudson’s Hope in 2006
A. He saw a breathtaking sight.
B. He visited some tourist attractions.
C. He encountered a friend who was a pilot.
D. H made headlines in the local newspaper.
29. What led to the construction of the large circles
A. A UFO. B. An article in 1999.
C. Deryk’s suffering in Iraq. D. Deryk’s journey to Baghdad.
30. What is the purpose of Deryk’s project
A. To bring peace to people. B. To teach his son a lesson.
C. To attract visitors to the town. D. To help a painful mother and child.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. What is happening in war-torn countries.
B. How the author and her husband were affected.
C. Who should be responsible for a chaotic world.
D. What the author and her husband have contributed to peace.
D
Humans are not the animal kingdom’s only fashionistas. Tits(山雀)can be fashion followers, too, apparently. A latest study shows that, given the chance, they decorate their nests with this season’s must-have color.
Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin were following up on a study published in 1934 by Henry Smith Williams, an American naturalist. He noticed that when he put various colored balls of yarn(紗)out in his garden, almost always one and only one became popular that season for being included into local birds’ nests. But which particular color was favored varied from season to season. This suggested that the color chosen by one of the early birds was spotted and copied by others.
Williams’s work was, however, forgotten until they came across it while following up on a different study, published by a team at the university of Toulouse, suggesting fashion-following, too. Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin therefore set out to re-run Williams’s experiment, but this time to collect some actual numbers.
The birds they followed were part of a well-monitored population of blue tits in a wood near the institute. Most birds in this wood carried tracking devices fitted to them after their capture in mist nets. That allowed the institute’s researchers to keep track of a vast number of individuals by recording their arrival at food containers throughout the wood. Instead of food, these containers were loaded with wool of different colors. Interestingly, researchers soon found that most nests of blue tits included only the color of the wool first chosen by a nestbuilder.
Tits, then, do seem to be “on trend”, when it comes to nest-building materials. Why that should happen remains obscure. Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin suspect the fashion leaders are older birds, and that evolution favors younger ones copying their elders since those elders have evidently survived what fortune has to throw at a tit. Williams’s original work, though, suggests such initial choices are at random— a bit like those of the leaders of human fashions.
32. What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A. Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin contributed to William’s work.
B. Early birds’ color preference was copied by their follows.
C. The yarn was the most popular material to decorate local birds’ nests.
D. The color of the yarn favored by local birds was fixed throughout the year.
33. How did Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin improve William’s experiment
A. They observed the blue tits.
B. They studied the habits of blue tits
C. They adopted the data-collecting method.
D. They fitted tracking devices to food containers.
34. What does the underlined word “obscure” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Hidden. B. Evident. C. Complicated. D. Shallow.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. Birds favor certain colors in decoration.
B. Young birds follow their elders in fashion.
C. Young birds are just as intelligent as people.
D. Birds are just as fashion-conscious as people.

閱讀下面短文,從短文后的選項中選出可以填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。
When I was young, I loved being around people. I had many friends, and usually, I’d get along with everyone. 36 I listened more than I spoke and gave my best advice to others to build a safe and comfortable environment for them. I found it so natural to do. I liked gifting a person a loving and comfortable experience.
Over the years, my thoughts changed. 37 Sometimes I even felt stressed. Especially in small friend groups, I felt like we just needed to be entertained most of the time and that it was my job to make that happen. I felt that being quiet was not cool or fun. 38 But even if that was the case, I didn’t necessarily want to cut ties awkwardly. Nothing good comes out of that.
39 I enjoy any kind of friend group setting. I use my past experience and get the best out of it. I truly enjoy being around people, but I also enjoy my alone time. I think that balance is key and enjoying that harmony is what makes life beautiful. It is what points to the direction of happiness for me— my life goal.
40 I start my day with myself to check in and meet my needs first, and then continue with my responsibilities and interact with others. This way I am less likely to enter negative environments and let negative energies influence me.
A. I felt the need to express myself.
B. Now, I’ve changed my thoughts once again.
C. I’m always the person outside of the small group.
D. My role in most of the communications I had was a listener.
E. I strongly suggest taking full advantage of different groups.
F. More than ever before, I’ve been setting time aside for my alone time.
G. I questioned whether I was just hanging out with the wrong group of people.

The summer I turned 16, my father gave me his 69 Chevy Malibu convertible (敞篷車). Beautifully repainted cherry red with V-8 engine—it was a gift wasted on me at that age. What did I know about classic cars The important thing was that Hannah and I could drive around Tucson with the top down.
Hannah was my best friend, a year younger but much taller, almost five foot ten. “Hannah’s a beautiful girl,” my mother always said. And sure enough, that summer she signed with a modeling agency. She was already doing runway work.
A month after my birthday, Hannah and I went to the movies. On the way home, we stopped at the McDonald’s drive-through, putting the fries on the seat between us to share. “Let’s ride around a-while,” I said. It was a clear night, oven-warm, full moon casting low over the desert. Making a turn too fast, l hit a patch of dirt and the back of the car slid to the other side. I then drove through a neighbor’s landscape wall and knocked into a full-grown palm. The front wheels came to rest half way up the tree trunk.
There were French fries on the floor, the dash (儀表盤), and my lap. An impossible amount of blood was on Hannah’s face, flaps of skin hanging into her eyes. They took us in separate ambulances. In the ER, my parents spoke quietly: “Best plastic surgeon in the city…but it is more likely to be the end of her modeling career.…”
We’d been wearing lap belts, but the car didn’t have shoulder bands. I’d broken my cheek bone on the steering wheel; Hannah’s forehead had split wide open on the dash. What would I say to her
When her mother, Sharon, came into my hospital room, I started to cry, preparing myself for her anger. She sat beside me and took my hand. “I rear-ended (追尾) my best friend when I was your age,” she said. “I destroyed her car and mine.” “I’m so sorry.” I said, knowing Sharon was trying her best to comfort me and helping me out of my terrible sense of guilt and self-blame.
注意:
1.續寫詞數應為150詞左右。
2.請按如下格式在答題卡的相應位置作答。
