At first, they are going to achieve this goal by watching a video clip and having a discussion in class. Then they will be asked to write a composition on this topic; that is to say, advantages and disadvantages of the computer as well as how should people do with a computer. The whole class is close to students’ real life, so it won’t be difficult or boring for them to participate and write.The analysis of students:Surely students are very likely to show interest in this class, but in order to have fun and learn something today, they are going to need proper guidance and work with others all the time. Besides, their vocabulary is quite small. So how to help them to accumulate some words and expressions is as important as achieving today’s learning objectives.Based on the above, learning objectives are set as follows:Learning objectives:After this class, students will be able to achieve objectives as follows:1. Knowledge objectives.Know something about the present role which the computer is playing in people’s life.Accumulate some words and expressions about advantages and disadvantages of the computer in speaking and writing.2. Ability objectives.Develop the ability of speaking and writing to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the computer by individual and group work.3. Emotional objectives.Set up a right attitude towards how to use the computer.Raise students’ interest and build up their confidence in speaking and writing.Learn to cooperate with others.Key and difficult points:1. To speak out advantages and disadvantages of the computer.2. To write a composition about advantages and disadvantages of the computer.3. To set up a right attitude towards how to use the computer.Idea and strategy:According to the characteristics of the Senior One students and requirements of the syllabus, the class has been designed with some activities to enable students to listen, speak, read and write as often as possible. Speaking and writing strategies are adopted to enable them to keep pace with the content of the class and speak out or write down their opinions freely in English.Learning methods:Task-based learning method. I am very old now.2. China is my hometown.3. In the past, people used me to calculate.The second one-the calculator1. My body is quite small.2. I am designed to calculate.3. Usually you can see me in shops.The third one-the PC (personal computer)1. At first I was quite huge.2. Now I can be placed on a desk.3. People use me to work, study or entertain.The fourth one-the laptop1. PC is kind of my “big brother”.2. But I am portable.3. Day by day I look more and more like a human being.[Design intention] This game is designed to activate students before getting started and also lead in the class.Step III Discussion.Part 1 Video-watching.Students will watch a video clip, which is about what the computer may become in the future.[Design intention] The video clip is about an imaginary intelligent housekeeper. In fact, this activity will let students realize the fact that the computer has already become an important and necessary part of people’s life and will continue to have almost everything to do with us. Thus the learning process will move on.Part 2 Computers: Good or bad Every coin has two sides. The computer has both advantages and disadvantages. Have a discussion on this topic; that is to say, talk about advantages and disadvantages of the computer in groups.[Design intention] The most important learn objective today is to help students set up a right attitude towards computer using in daily life. Therefore, it’s a must for them to think and talk about the computer’s advantages and disadvantages.Part 3 Share your ideas.Students will share with the whole class about advantages and disadvantages they have just discussed about in group. And they, in the meantime, are asked to write their ideas down on their work sheets.Advantages Disadvantages[Design intention] Working in group to solve a given problem is an ability of great importance for students. The activity is no doubt a good chance for this. Writing their ideas down will prepare them for the writing task following.Part 4 Draw a conclusion.A computer is a very helpful machine with lots of functions. Of course it has both advantages and disadvantages. As long as we use the computer in a proper way, it will certainly bring us more advantages than disadvantages.[Design intention] The conclusion drawn here is necessary for the writing activity in class next.Step IV Writing.Part 1 Writing topic.Some people say computers bring us more advantages than disadvantages. Meanwhile, the activity will improve students’ ability of cooperating in a team.Step V Summary.Together with the whole class, the teacher will summarize this class quickly.[Design intention] Students will go through what they have done and learned in the class as reinforcement.Step VI Homework.1. At present, students may be enthusiastic about participating in class activities, but their linguistic competence will hinder their actual performance. Because of a lack of vocabulary, students often find that it is difficult for them to freely express themselves in English. As for this lesson, they were told to prepare for several activities during class. Apparently, they did quite well in this one. Thus preparation is a key point for a successful lesson. Meanwhile, the teacher should never ignore the importance of daily practice. I have noticed that they were having trouble understanding my English instructions. I think for me, I should pay more attention to daily teaching in order that students won’t have such difficulty in following what I am saying.
