Mike was in my third-grade class. All the 34 students were dear to me, but he was one in a million. Very neat in appearance, he had that happy-to-be-alive attitude which made even his occasional mischievousness(調皮搗蛋)delightful.

As summer gives way to autumn, many of us long for warmth and sunlight. It is common for some of us to feel upset when the days get shorter. People call this phenomenon autumn sadness.
While autumn sadness is a common seasonal feeling we have as sunlight comes in shorter supply, for some people, it takes on a more serious form known as seasonal affective disorder, or SAD.
SAD. a form of depression(抑郁癥), mostly starts in late autumn or early winter and goes away in spring and summer. People who have SAD typically oversleep, overeat, and lose interest in activities they once enjoyed. Generally, almost all people suffering from SAD feel sad, helpless, and even desperate.
The exact cause of SAD is not yet completely understood, but several factors have been linked to its development. Johns Hopkins University suggests that reduced exposure(接觸)to natural light during the autumn and winter months may disrupt the body’s internal clock and the hormones(荷爾蒙)produced, such as melatonin and serotonin, which are related to sleep and emotions, respectively. This disruption can lead to depression.
Handling SAD often requires medical help. Light therapy is a common and effective treatment. Patients are advised to expose themselves to sunlight or man-made light that imitates natural sunlight. Light therapy can help regulate patients’ hormones and get their lives back on track.
Moreover, living a healthier life, such as keeping a regular sleep schedule, taking part in regular physical activity, and having a balanced diet, can help manage SAD. But it’s also important that people seek help from a medical professional to determine the most suitable treatment plan for their specific needs.

The dry land in Gir National Park and Wildlife Preserve, located near India western tip, is the proud— and only — home of the Asiatic lion. By the early 1900s, however, their populations had been cut down for home loss and hunting, leaving fewer than50 known individuals alive. Though their numbers have risen over the past several decades— climbing to around 670 in 2020, a successful story— the lions are still considered endangered.
One of the biggest challenges to keep the lions’ future is to track them, a hard work. Some animals, like tigers and zebras, have special coat patterns(圖案)that provide useful marks to the researchers. But for the Asiatic lions, researchers must look elsewhere.
In 2019, Banerjee, who worked for India’s National Tiger Conservation Authority, developed an AI system to recognize the lions with high accuracy(精準). The AI program, SIMBA, has been applied in practice. “It will be a fantastic tool for long-term lion monitoring,” says Banerjee. As scheduled, gathering at school gate in the morning, we set off for a 3-hour journey of cycling along the Urban Greenway. Some students, full of energy, enthusiasm and determination, sped through the course like arrows, their wheels spinning rapidly along with their singing and laughing all the way. Others pedaled leisurely, bathed in the gentle breeze and immersed in the beautiful scenery around. The rhythmic sound of their wheels on the path added to the peaceful and harmonious New Year atmosphere, creating a moment of pure happiness and relaxation.
Exhausted as we were, the event was a success and highly thought of by teachers and students. Not only did students experience the joy of low-carbon travel firsthand, but they were also inspired to take action in creating a new and greener future.

Lily couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother’s arms. “Mom, I am sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.” She expressed her sincere apology and heartfelt gratitude. Hearing this, her mother was so moved and happy that she shed tears of happiness and hugged Lily tightly. Lily hugged her mother tightly too, feeling the warmth and love that she had almost forgotten. It was at that moment that Lily came to the enlightenment that motherly love is to children what sunshine is to flowers.
