Maggie was looking for a chance to do something good during her summer break from college. She wanted to find an activity that combined her interests and she found the perfect opportunity at a local animal shelter. “I thought about volunteering and I’ve always loved animals and photography,” she said.
For the past two weeks, Maggie has been taking portraits (肖像) of cats and dogs at an animal shelter in Kentucky. The idea came to her after she read articles saying that animals with good photos are more likely to get adopted than those without. “So I just called the shelter and asked if I could come in and they seemed really grateful.” said Maggie.
Maggie said that the shelter is in a rural area that’s difficult to reach. But since her photos were added to the shelter’s Facebook page, “they say they can’t believe how many calls they’ve been getting.”
Part of her success, she said, is that she gets to know the dogs before taking their portrait. There’s Blinky. “She absolutely loves to go out and run and is a super sweet dog that loves taking photos. She just smiles at me and everything.” said Maggie. There’s also Jersey, a one-year-old female dog that Maggie describes as calm and well-mannered.
The phenomenon in which pet adopters shun dark coated dogs is called black dog syndrome (綜合征). But it is unclear how much the issue actually affects pet adoptions. A 2002 study found that black fur negatively influenced adoption rates for dogs. According to the report, Black dogs had the least likelihood of being adopted compared to dogs of all other colors.
Maggie said at least one of those dogs had been adopted several weeks before. “When I came in today people at the shelter told me that many people had come in and talked about how the photos made them want to come to the shelter,” she added proudly.
24.What inspired Maggie to take photos of dogs
A.Attractive photos of a black dog.
B.Articles on animal adoption.
C.A call from an animal shelter.
D.A part-time job in summer break.
25.What does paragraph 4 show about Maggie
A.She fully appreciates beauty in nature.
B.She develops professional photography skills.
C.She impresses pet adopters with good manners.
D.She learns about dogs’ personality before photographing them
26.What does the underlined word “shun” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Avoid. B.Rescue. C.Raise. D.Train.
27.What does Maggie say about her photos
A.They should involve more types of pets.
B.They have won her more business orders.
C.They failed to help a pet find a home.
D.They attracted much public attention for the shelter.

Scientists have been surprised and impressed with the long-distance travel of a bird recently, a common cuckoo (布谷鳥) which flew from southern Africa to Mongolia.
Onon is a common cuckoo. It’s one of 5 cuckoos who were tagged last summer in Mongolia, far to the north of China. Though cuckoos originally came from Africa, until recently scientists weren’t sure that cuckoos from Mongolia flew to Africa for the winter.
In June, 2019, scientists attached tiny trackers to five cuckoos. These satellite tags allowed the scientists to follow the movements of the birds on a map. Sure enough, Onon spent the winter in southern Africa — in Zambia.
This spring, Onon returned to Mongolia, amazing scientists once again with his long-distance flying. In just a couple of months, Onon flew more than 12,000 kilometers. It crossed 16 countries, flying at an average speed of 60 kilometers per hour.
Long migrations are common among sea birds, but cuckoos are land birds. “It was one of the longest animal migrations which has been recorded for a land bird,” said Chris Hewson, one of the project’s lead scientists.
At times, Onon stopped for a few hours or a few days. But some of the long stretches, like crossing the Indian Ocean, had to be done without stopping. The birds have to travel through strong winds and storms, make sure they find enough to eat, and avoid being eaten themselves.
Luckily, cuckoos seem to have a good sense of weather patterns, allowing them to fatten up as much as possible right before they leave. They also seem to be good at finding helpful winds that allow them to travel long distances without getting too tired. Still, flying such long distances isn’t easy. Onon is the only one of the five tagged cuckoos who made it all the way back to Mongolia.
28.Why were satellite tags attached to five cuckoos
A.To make them safe. B.To position the birds.
C.To draw a detailed map. D.To observe them in winter.
29.How did scientists feel when knowing Onon returned to Mongolia
A.Delighted. B.Astonished. C.Puzzled. D.Annoyed.
30.Why is crossing the Indian Ocean mentioned
A.Because it is very dangerous. B.Because it is well-known.
C.Because it is a place to go. D.Because it is rich in food.
31.What’s the last paragraph mainly about
A.Cuckoos’ advantages. B.Cuckoos’ senses.
C.Cuckoos’ habits. D.Cuckoos’ will.

Now, Tenjen Sherpa, a Nepalese mountain guide, has set a new goal for himself; to become the youngest person to conquer all the peaks twice.
Last month, together with Norwegian climber Kristin Harila, Tenjen, 35 years old, broke the previous record for the fastest climb of the 8,000-meter-plus mountains. In just 92 days, they reached the final summit, K2, surpassing the previous record of 189 days.
Tenjen is now preparing for his next challenge, starting with a climb of Mount Shishapangma in China within the next two months. He has already successfully climbed seven of the peaks twice and aims to conquer the remaining seven by next spring.
His journey began in 2016 when he first climbed Mount Dhaulagiri in Nepal. Since then, he has made several similar climbs each year, including four trips to Mount Everest. Particularly, Tenjen and his three brothers also hold a record as the most siblings to summit Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-tallest mountain, behind Everest and K2.
Tenjen started working as a mountain guide to back his family. In April, he joined Harila’s expedition to Mount Sh shapangma, hired by the Kathmandu-based company Seven Summits Treks. Together, they continued their journey, conquering the rest of the peaks.
Tenjen plans to climb Shishapangma for the second time in the upcoming fall, carrying pictures of a deceased brother who never had the opportunity to conquer this mountain. He intends to bury these images at the mountaintop.
Tenjen told Associated Press that Sherpas do not get enough government recognition for their hard work.“It is not possible to just continue climbing mountains as you grow older, so what else is there than to think of migrating abroad,” Tenjen pointed out.
Tenjen never attended school growing up. He has difficulty reading and writing. But, living in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, his children are able to get an education. Tenjen thinks, though, that since more children will be growing up in cities in the future, they will not have the skills to become Sherpas.
32.What is Tenjen’s new goal
A.To climb all the mountains twice. B.To climb Mount Everest alone.
C.To break the record with Harila.. D.To set a new peak-climbing record.
33.Why did Tenjen become a mountain guide initially
A.To support his family. B.To break climbing records.
C.To explore the world’s mountains. D.To join an expedition with Norwegians.

Try to forget the cares of everyday life. You can achieve this by ensuring you don’t check emails or social media, or feel obligated to use it to record your best holiday moments. Ideally, turn off notices, limit your screen time and try to focus on the present moment. That will enable you to relax and make special memories.
Eat and drink well and mindfully

Louisa Cantoni became aware of a young man leaning against the side of her house, a cigarette hanging from his mouth. He looked to be 13 or 14 years old with threatening, dark brown eyes.
When she was younger, the little ones would flock around her. They loved her Italian accent and flowers and always stayed nearby when it was tomato season, popping her sweet tomatoes into their mouths. Those sweet memories were just that. So much had changed in the neighborhood. The Italian section of the downtown area had been turned into low-rent housing and overgrown yards. New renters had just moved in and worn her out with all the rudeness, the shouting, and the sad faces of the grannies.
One day, Louisa was harvesting the last of her vegetables when a shadow appeared from behind her. She knew it was the boy. “What, what do you want from me ” She asked in a tired tone. The boy stood silent for a while. “My momma, she likes flowers, show me how ” he offered. “Show you what, how to be a nice person ” Louisa had no interest in showing this boy anything. “Show me how to grow those.” He pointed to the flowers. Louisa sighed. “Just go on away and leave me alone.”
“You ain’t gotta be so mean,” Jevon murmured and left.
The next day, the boy came as usual, but she noticed he was different, younger, innocent and beautiful with smooth brown skin and broad shoulders.
“What is your name, young man ” She asked.
“My name Jevon.”
“Thank you, I am Louisa. Miss Louisa to you.” She stuck out her hand which he reluctantly shook. “What is it you want from me You stare at me; you steal my zinnias(百日菊). That’s not nice, Jevon.”
“I want to learn how to grow a flower for my momma.” He sounded like a little boy.
“I have rules, Jevon. No rudeness, no hoodie(連帽衫), pull your pants up, and no cigarettes, ever.”
“You’re not my momma. I don’t have to do any of that,” he responded.
注意:
1.續寫詞數應為150個左右;
Five days later, Jevon showed up in a clean T-shirt and belted pants.

根據文章第六段“who never had the opportunity to conquer this mountain.
根據文章最后一段“Tenjen thinks, though, that since more children will be growing up in cities in the future, they will not have the skills to become Sherpas.(然而,Tenjen認為,由于未來會有更多的孩子在城市長大,他們將不具備成為夏爾巴人的技能)”可知,Tenjen擔心孩子們將缺乏夏爾巴人的技能。故選A項。
37.根據本段第一句“Besides the stress of organizing your break in the first place, there’s the added anxiety of remembering to buy and pack everything you need, as well as getting where you need to go on time.(除了一開始組織假期的壓力外,還有記住購買和打包你需要的一切,以及準時到達你需要去的地方的額外焦慮)”可知,作者提到了在準備旅行的過程中容易引起焦慮的情況,其中一種則是及時到達要去的地方,而后文針對前面的每一種情況均給出了建議,唯獨關于及時到達的問題沒有信息。此外,本段從第二句“To avoid this, as soon as you’ve booked your holiday, list the travel documents you’ll need.(為了避免這種情況,一旦你預訂了假期,列出你需要的旅行證件)”開始以時間為序,依次介紹了在出行準備階段需要做的事,據此推斷設空處為最后階段的準備。
38.根據本段內容“Try to forget the cares of everyday life. You can achieve this by ensuring you don’t check emails or social media, or feel obligated to use it to record your best holiday moments. Ideally, turn off notices, limit your screen time and try to focus on the present moment. That will enable you to relax and make special memories.(試著忘掉日常生活的煩惱。
Consider walking and swimming or tennis.(嘗試一項新的活動。
41.A 42.C 43.B 44.D 45.D 46.A 47.B 48.C 49.C 50.A 51.C 52.B 53.D 54.D 55.B
A. extremely極其;B. deliberately故意地;C. accidentally偶然地;D. hardly幾乎不。根據上文中的“Have you ever had a day when everything seemed to go wrong, and nothing seemed to go right Not too long ago I was having one of those days.” 故選A項。
根據上文中的“I was discouraged, weary, and ___1___ sad. My focus was on me, me, me.”
A. consequence結果;B. state狀態;C. expectation期望;D. memory記憶力。根據上文中的“I was discouraged, weary, and ___1___ sad.”
根據上文中的“She didn’t offer any comfort”可知,母親沒有安慰作者,結合空后的“she said, “I heard Jamie was having a difficult day too. Why don’t you make her some ____5____ and we’ll take them to her this afternoon ””可知,母親告訴作者朋友Jamie也處于困難的境地,建議作者做點東西下午帶給他,由此可知,上下文之間為轉折關系,所以此處使用“反而”符合邏輯。故選D項。
結合語境和上文中的“I heard Jamie was having a difficult day too”可知,母親告訴作者Jamie現在也處于困難的境地,所以應建議作者做點“餅干”帶給她,符合語境。故選D項。
根據上文中的“I didn’t really intend to, but I was bound to”可知,作者不想這么做,但還不得不去做,因為作者“不愿意的”回到自己的問題上,符合語境。故選A項。
A. shared分享;B. arranged安置;C. exhibited展覽;D. sold售賣。根據常識和上文中的“I made some”以及下文中的“on a little plate. Then I made a card with a sunflower on it and wrote a small note of empathy.”
A. broke into闖入;B. took over接管,占上風;C. dropped by順便拜訪;D. cleaned up清理干凈。根據上文中的“Why don’t you make her some ____5____ and we’ll take them to her this afternoon ”可知,母親建議作者做點餅干,下午帶給朋友Jamie,由此可知,此處指的是“順便拜訪”朋友家,符合語境。故選C項。
A. surprise驚訝;B. embarrassment尷尬;C. fright害怕;D. pain疼痛。 故選A項。
A. defended防御;B. pushed推進;C. rushed沖,迅速移動;D. promised承諾。
A. buried埋藏;B. crossed橫過,掠過;C. saddened使悲傷;D. stroked輕撫。根據下文中的“Jamie’s face was one that I could never put into words.”
A. blocked阻擋;B. torn撕,扯;C. fixed修理;D. lit照亮。根據下文中的“it was as if in that small act, her day was brightened.”

56.an 57.surveyed 58.has conducted 59.Teenagers 60.higher 61.acknowledging 62.themselves 63.if 64.on 65.who
故填an。
Over the past several months可知,此處應用現在完成時,主語the company為第三人稱單數,助動詞用has。故填has conducted。
故填if。
on the basis of為固定短語,意為“基于……”。故填on。
故填who。

Five days later, Jevon showed up in a clean T-shirt and belted pants. Louisa had a kit ready for him. The beautiful boy began to emerge. He smiled a genuine smile at Louisa. She felt a wave of warmth through her body while she watched the boy carefully plant the seeds. They tracked the growth of the seeds every day. Louisa provided him with various seeds which he could develop and books which could nourish his mind. With every sprout, the boy bloomed. Finally, he bid farewell to Miss Louisa with skills to manage a beautiful garden for his mother and more.
Time flying, Jevon became a Harvard freshman, eager to see Miss Louisa. Gently holding a bunch of zinnias, he knocked at the door of Miss Louisa. Seeing a handsome young man, strange but seemingly familiar, Miss Louisa was surprised but still recognized him immediately. After a long conversation concerning his life with Miss Louisa, he gratefully stressed, “It is you who have made me a man and taught me kindness. It is you who have taught me how to grow things both in the dirt and in my mind. Thank you for giving me a chance to be who I am today.”
