In August, Cai Yifan, 19 and Cai Yiming, 17, two brothers from Quanzhou, Fujian, won the Silver Award of the19th Soong Ching Ling Award for Children’s Invention. Their invention, a smart traffic police vest (馬甲), impressed the judges and is set to change the way traffic police communicate.
“With this vest, traffic police officers can communicate using long-distance, real-time voice-to-text technology”, the brothers explained. The vest features an LED screen that can display translated text, supporting transitions from Chinese into English, Japanese and Korean. The vest also features a smart Q&A function, allowing users to ask questions, with answers immediately appearing on the screen, much like a mobile search engine.
The brothers’ inspiration came from personal experiences. “Our father once attended a police academy and often shared stories about the challenges police face”, Cai Yifan shared. One time, during a heavy rainstorm, they saw traffic officers struggling to direct cars due to poor invisibility. This situation sparked the idea for a vest that could visually display spoken instructions, helping to avoid miscommunication.
Before developing the vest, the brothers conducted in-depth research by interviewing traffic police officers about the challenges they face on duty. They then identified key features such as voice recognition and translation functions. With the help of online tutorials and advice from their teachers, the brothers spent nearly four months developing the vest. Cai Yiming, who has strong hands-on skills, focused on assembling (組裝) the hardware (硬件), while Cai Yifan handled the software development.
“Our parents have always encouraged our curiosity”, Cai Yiming noted. From a young age, the brothers were interested in technology and began experimenting with programming and small inventions like simple circuits (電路) and model cars.

Large languages models have a huge demand for electricity. The energy consumed in training OpenAI’s GPT-4 model is sufficient to power 50 American households for a century. As the models get bigger, the cost will rise rapidly. It is estimated that the training cost of the largest models nowadays is $ 100 million, and the next generation may cost $ 1 billion, while the following one is likely to balloon to $ 10 billion. Over time, such inference costs may accumulate and exceed the training costs.
This is terrifying news for investors, many of whom have bet big on AI. Nvidia, which designs the chips most commonly used in Al models, has seen its market capitalization increased by $ 2.5 trillion over the past two years. Since 2023, investors have poured nearly $95 billion into AI start-ups.
However, there is no need to panic. Many technologies have hit bottlenecks before but eventually continued to thrive thanks to human creativity. The oil price shocks in the 1970s encouraged energy efficiency and alternative methods, including nuclear power generation, developed well in some countries. Thirty years later, fracturing technology made the extraction of oil and natural gas more economically sustainable.
The development of AI has already shown how constraints can stimulate creativity. Companies are development chips specifically designed to run large language models. Cutting back on animal protein in our diets can save on resources and greenhouse gas emissions. But convincing meat-loving consumers to switch up their menu is a challenge. Looking at this problem from a mechanical engineering angle, Stanford engineers are pioneering a new approach to food texture (n.質(zhì)地,紋理)
testing that could pave the way for artificial steaks that fool even committed meat lovers.
In a new paper in Science of Food, the team demonstrated that a combination of mechanical testing and machine learning can describe food texture with striking similarity to human taste testers. Such a method could speed up the development of better plant-based meats. The team also found that some plant-based products are already presenting the texture of the meats they’re imitating.
“We were’ surprised to find that today’s plant-based products can reproduce the whole texture of animal meats,” said Ellen Kuhl, professor of mechanical engineering and senior author of the study. Meat substitutes have come a long way from when tofu was the only option, she added.
Industrial animal agriculture contributes to climate change, pollution, habitat loss, and so on. That burden on the planet can be eased by exchanging animal proteins for plant proteins in diets. One study estimated that plant-based meats, on average, have half the environmental impact as animal meat. But many meat eaters are reluctant to change; only about a third of Americans in one survey indicated they were “very likely” to buy plant-based alternatives.
“People love meat,” said Skyler St. Pierre, a PhD student in mechanical engineering and lead author of the paper. “If we want to convince the meat eaters that alternatives are worth trying, the closer we can imitate animal meat with plant-based products, the more likely people might be open to trying something new.”
To successfully imitate animal meat, food scientists analyze the texture of plant-based meat products. Unfortunately, traditional food testing methods are not standardized and the results are rarely made available to science and to the public, said St. Pierre. This makes it harder for scientists to create new recipes for alternatives.
