XinHua—To reduce pressure on students, junior high school students in Beijing will only be scored on six of their 10 senior high school entrance exams from 2025, while the remaining four tests will be given a letter grade (等級) A, B, C, D. The Beijing Municipal Education Commission (北京市教育委員會) announced on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2023 that the exams would be changed to better reflect (反映) the development of the cultural, physical, political and psychological skills of students moving up from junior to senior high.
In China, high school education includes junior high (from Grade 7 to 9) and senior high (from Grade 10 to 12). The six subjects that will continue to have exam results scored are Chinese, math, English, physics, physical education, ethics and rule of law. The four subjects that will receive a letter grade are geography, biology, chemistry and history. A few high schools in Beijing are already making changes.
Li Yi, director of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, said the present exam system (系統) depends too heavily on rote memorization, that is to say, the students only need to memorize the things their teachers teach them without thinking. He also said that teachers have little time to spend on experimental teaching methods (實驗教學方法) and after-class activities. To make the exams more colorful, while the chemistry, history, geography and biology exams will be given a letter grade, the ethics and rule of law exam will be open-book to encourage students to have more problemsolving abilities.

①Sugar painting, as the name means, is a painting made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to admire.
②Since the Warring States Period (戰國時代), the ancient people loved sweets and developed methods of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, there was huge progress in the technology of sugar making. And sugar, the precious product once only served to the emperors and princes, also went into common people’s homes. With the cultural and economic (經濟的) development of Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck into the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting appeared.
③Sugar painting is different from normal painting. Sugar painters use syrup (糖漿) as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is done.

The next day was also cold and gray. Nobody talked much during breakfast. Mrs March was pale and tired. The girls tried to hide their tears.

She was happy to lie on the sofa all day with her books and medicine. Amy got bored with doing housework so she took out her pencils and drawing book again. I am glad to be here, telling you about my family rules. There are various kinds of rules in my family.
First, in my family, I am supposed to be honest and polite, and show respect to others. Second, I’m required to share housework at home to relieve my parents’ burden. Third, doing exercise for half an hour every day is on my schedule. Also, I’m not allowed to eat more junk food and my parents tell me to eat more vegetables and fruit to keep healthy.
These rules have shaped me. I have learnt how to behave well both in and out home. What’s more, by doing chores, my sense of responsibility and living skills have been improved. Besides, doing sports regularly helps me keep fit.
To sum up, I believe family rules are there to make sure our life stays on track.
