Have students read the quote from Bill Gates and answer the following questions. What kind of technology is the most important to you How do you use it I think the most important technology to me is the Internet. I greatly depend on it to getinformation and communicate with others. Also, devices like computers, smartphones andeven some smartwatches now have access to the Internet. These devices allow me to getonline from anywhere and at anytime. They are truly a critical part of my daily life.2. Have students watch the video and fill in the blanks on page 43.The Moon; computers3. Have students watch the video again and answer the following questions.(1) Have you read or watched any of the science fiction works mentioned in the video What is your understanding of it I have watched The Matrix. The idea of connecting a human brain to a computer is bothexciting and frightening. I like the part when the main character realizes that he is “the one”and takes the responsibility to save humanity. Although this technology is not yet a reality, Ifeel like we are getting closer to it. I hope I can get to experience living in a virtual world.(2) Why do you think people like to imagine the future 批 注The future always looks promising for most people. Imagining what the future will be likemay encourage people to work harder to turn their fantasies into reality. Imagining what thefuture could be like also helps us progress as a species.4. Have students answer the three questions on page 43.1) What other descriptions in science fiction have turned into reality In the popular science fiction TV series, Star Trek, the people in the future use a devicecalled a “communicator”, which looks similar to the mobile phones of today. It is said thatthe man who invented the first mobile phone in the 1970s directly credited the TV series forinspiring him. In 1964, Isaac Asimov, a well-known science fiction author, wrote an articlepredicting what inventions would be on display in the future. He predicted vehicles with“robot-brains”, which would be capable of self-driving. Currently, selfdriving vehicletechnology is in various stages of development and advancement.2) Jules Verne believes that anything people can imagine can be made real. Do you agree Why or why not Yes, I agree with Jules Verne’s statement because humans are curious, and we haveunlimited imagination. We focus on increasing our knowledge and we enjoy makingdiscoveries. Inevitably, our constant search for answers leads to advances in technology andthat in turn helps us find ways to turn things we once only imagined into reality. Lookingaround today, many things that people in the past believed could never happen havebecome a part of our daily lives. Who knows what ideas in the present will be a reality in thefuture 3) What technology do you imagine will be possible in the future and how do you think itwill change our lives Our palmprints and fingerprints are usually scanned for identification. In the future, I thinkour hands will be implanted with sensors to become scanners themselves. Using our handsas scanners would make it more convenient to identify ourselves and pay for items. Our handscould even be used to exchange digital business cards or any other information through a handshake.
