A Private Conversation
Last week I went to the theatre. I had a very good seat. The play was very interesting. I did not enjoy it. A young man and a young woman were sitting behind me. They were talking loudly. I got very angry. I could not hear the actors. I turned round. I looked at the man and the woman angrily. They did not pay any attention. In the end, I could not bear it. I turned round again. “I can't hear a word!” I said angrily. “It's none of your business, ” the young man said rudely. “This is a private conversation!”
這是《新概念英語》第二冊的第1課，圍繞動詞的時態展開，有一般現在時、一般過去時、過去進行時。還可以從中體會一下英式隱私和句子的邏輯表達。

語法講解
一般現在時+一般過去時
“I can’t hear a word!” I said angrily. 我非常生氣地說：“我啥都聽不見！”
“It’s none of your business,” the young man said rudely. “This is a private conversation!”那個年輕人粗魯地說：“這跟你有啥關系呢。這是我們倆的私聊！”
本節解析：這兩個句子的主句都用的是一般過去時，因為這些動作都是發生在上個星期，但其中兩個引號引起來的賓語從句都是一般現在時。引號內的時態不必和主句保持一致，它要受自身表達內容的制約而使用不同的時態。
一般過去時
Last week I went to the theatre. 上周，我去戲院看戲。
I had a very good seat. 買了個很不錯的座位。
The play was very interesting. 這個戲也很有趣。
I did not enjoy it. （但）我（卻）沒能好好欣賞到。7. I got very angry. 我一下就非常生氣。
解析：got是系動詞，表示“變得”“處于……狀態”。
I could not hear the actors. 我聽不見演員們到底在說什么。
I turned round. 我轉過身。
I looked at the man and the woman angrily. 我非常生氣地盯著這對男女。
They did not pay any attention. 他們絲毫不在乎我是否在盯著他們。12. In the end, I could not bear it. 后來，我終于忍無可忍。13. I turned round again. 我又轉過身。
本節解析：這些句子使用的都是一般過去時，表示這些都是過去發生的動作（例句3、6、8、9、10、11、12、13）或狀態（例句4、5、7）。
過去進行時
A young man and a young woman were sitting behind me. 一對青年男女就坐在我的后排。
They were talking loudly. 他們就在大聲地聊天。
本節解析：這兩個過去進行時就是為了營造一種此時此刻的情景，讓人感到如臨其境，如聞其聲，營造電影蒙太奇鏡頭一樣的效果。如果把這兩個句子的時態都換成一般過去時，雖然從語法和語義上也是正確的可接受的，但表達效果卻要大打折扣了。 、
詞匯提示
Go to the theatre 去看戲，但go to school去上學，go to hospital去住院。Go to the school 去學校（辦事、找人等），go to the hospital 去醫院（辦事、看病人、找人等。）go to the dentist’s去看牙。
I could not hear the actors. 我聽不見演員們到底在說什么。此處的actors是指“演員們說的臺詞”。類似的表達有：I like reading Lu Xun very much.（我非常喜歡讀魯迅的作品。）
英漢兩種語言的標點符號使用不盡相同。漢語中表示引用他人的話語的時候，一般要用冒號和引號（：“”），而英語中則是逗號和引號（，“”）。參見語法講解例句1和2.
思辨能力
是非顛倒的隱私觀。隱私是現代人的一大偏好，人人都強調自己的隱私，都要有自己的私人空間，所以難免就有It’s none of your business!（關你屁事！）這種臟話，也有It’s a private conservation!（我倆說的悄悄話，你偷聽個啥！）但隱私是以尊重他人為前提，不得以自己的所謂隱私干擾他人的生活。在公共場合，尊重他人，不打擾他人，這才是最大的隱私。
在閱讀的時候要注意句子間的邏輯關系。The play was very interesting. I did not enjoy it.既然這戲很有趣，那怎么又無法欣賞到呢？后面的句子馬上就給出了原因，原來是A young man and a young woman were sitting behind me. They were talking loudly這對粗鄙無禮的男女在后排叨嘮不已影響了我的觀感。
本文是給初級階段的語言學習者使用的，所以控制了難易程度，回避了連接詞的使用。比如The play was very interesting. I did not enjoy it. A young man and a young woman were sitting behind me. They were talking loudly.這四句話就可以用連詞合并成一句話：The play was very interesting, but I did not enjoy it, because a young man and a young woman were sitting behind me and talking loudly.
作業：
朗讀課文。朗讀到能夠背誦。如果做不到背誦全篇，那就力爭能夠復述某些句子，或者在得到提示的情況下背誦全篇。
用movie替換本文的theatre，看看自己是不是也能把這個故事重新講一遍。go to the cinema，去電影院看電影。相應的，也要用film或movie替代其中的play哦。
