At first, I wanted to give up the job because getting up too early in the morning made me unhappy. After working at the convenience store for almost one year, I was used to getting up so early, because I knew there would be a few good moments every day there.
Working at the convenience store, I’ve learned to grow into a boy that can depend on myself and get along well with others. And I’m not the shy person that I used to be. My mother often encouraged me whenever things weren’t going my way. After I left college in 1932, I decided to find a job in a radio station as a sports announcer (解說員). I tried my best but failed.
In one station, a kind lady told me that big stations wouldn’t hire a person who had little experience and she said that I should try my luck at some smaller stations. Also, there were fewer big stations than small ones. Following her advice, I went back to my hometown—Dixon. There were no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, and my father said a newly-opened store wanted a local (當地的) sportsman to work for it. I tried but was refused again.
Although things didn’t go well as I planned, my mother still cared about me. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director (導演), Peter MacArthur, told me that they had already hired an announcer. When I left his office, I felt upset. “How can I become a sports announcer if I can’t get a job in a radio station ” I asked myself. While I was waiting for the lift, I heard someone calling. It was Peter MacArthur, “Man, do you know anything about football ” Then he asked me to report a soccer game online. After that, he gave me a chance to work there. On my way home, I thought of my mother’s words, “_____” I knew my mother was always there for me, so what she said really cheered me up.
