Anshun Batik(蠟染)is a traditional folk printing and dyeing handicraft ( 印染手工藝品)in China. The batik technique(工藝)of the Miao people has a long history that can be dated back to the Qin and Han Dynasties.
The batik technique can be found in Hunan. Guizhou and Yunnan provinces. Among them. Anshun in Guizhou is known as the hometown of batik. Xiangxi in Hunan Province is famous for its rich batik materials. Yunnan Dongoa batik was formed on the base of Guizhou batik.
Anshun batik has more than 2,000 years of history. Its patterns are often filled with rich mon patterns are flowers, birds, fish and so on. The colors are usually red , yellow and brown. Anshun batik can be divided into two types They are wax(蠟)painting and batik. In the production process, traditional wax dyers(蠟染師)use a knife with melted wax to draw different patterns on a white cloth, and then add the dye. People usually draw animals, plants, rivers and lakes freely on the white cloth. The dye does not go where the wax is and leaves a natural pattern, then the beautiful batik work remains.
According to Miao custom, everyone has the responsibility to pass down the skill. Every mother teaches her daughter to make batik clothing. Through this, areas with a Miao population have formed a culture with batik art as its central part.
Anshun batik art has experienced rapid development in the last 20 years. Many foreign tourists come to visit the wax printing culture of Guizhou Museum every year. It is a great pleasure that China’s traditional skills can have such a great influence at home and abroad.

In Petaluma, California, US, to-go drinks are now served in a type of purple cup. Each cup has a QR code(二維碼). More than 60 special bins(桶)have been set up around the city to collect these cups. Workers will come later to clean them and send them back to shops for reuse, reported CBS News.
The city-wide project is the first of its kind in the US. It aims to stops the use of disposable (一次性的) cups, which have been around since the early 1900s. Before the invention of disposable cups, people shared wooden or metal(金屬的)cups for drinking. Lawrence Luellen, a lawyer in Boston. US, was worried about the spread of germs(細(xì)菌的傳播). So he invented a disposable“Health Cup” made of paper in 1907. It quickly caught on, especially after the serious Spanish flu(西班牙流感) in 1918.
Disposable cups are common. Today’s disposable cups also have polystyrene(聚苯乙烯) in them. This type of plastic(塑料)helps keep the drinks warm. However, it takes about 500 years to completely break up. Since its start on Aug 1, the purple cup project in Petaluma has received wide attention. More than 30 businesses have joined in, including Starbucks and Coca-Cola.
