派生法是英語主要的構詞法。這方法是借前綴或后綴產生出派生詞,主要有名詞、形容詞和動詞三種。前綴以否定前綴un-、in-、im-、il-、ir-、non-、dis-、mis-等為主,使單詞延伸出來的派生詞變成其反義詞。例如:injustice(不公平的)、unhappy(不高興的)、impossible(不可能的)等。
(1)名詞派生詞
balance(平衡)→imbalance(不平衡);pleasure(高興)→displeasure(不高興);
management(管理)→ mismanagement(管理不善);
efficiency(功效)→inefficiency(無效率)等。

agree(贊同)→disagree(不贊同);judge(判斷)→misjudge(對……判斷錯誤);
treat(款待)→mistreat(虐待)等。

除了否定前綴之外,其他常用的前綴還有 anti-、auto-、bi-、co-、counter-、de-、ex-、inter-、post-、pre-、pro-、re-、sub-、trans-、tri-、ultra-等。
但要注意:英語中的前綴in-、un-通常表示“不”或“……的相反”的含義,因此由其構成的派生詞一般具有否定的意義。然而,有些由這兩個前綴構成的派生詞并非有否定的意義,而與詞根同義或近義。著名學者周海中教授在《in-、un-不一定表示“否定”》一文中就舉了若干個例子,如:
coming/incoming(來到);habit/inhabit(居住于);loose/unloose(解開,釋放);rip/unrip(撕開)等。這類派生詞雖然不多,但值得注意,勿望詞生義。
