Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher I do, mine. Her name was Mrs. White.
I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star.Sometimes even a Good! The scrawl(潦草的筆跡)in that worried my mother, so one day when she met Mrs. White for one of those Parent-Teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my mistakes. Why she never red-pencilled in the right spellings of words or pointed out grammatical errors.
Mrs. White said, “The children are just beginning to get excited about using words, about forming sentences. I don’t want to dampen that enthusiasm with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait ...” What my mother gave me was the gist of what she could remember. But I grew up learning to use words with loving confidence just like that.
And it occurs to me that if Mrs. White had used her red pen more precisely I probably wouldn’t be telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a rather extraordinary teacher—to restrain(限制)her red pen. To allow the joy, wonder and excitement of expression flower—however faultily—like that.
I used to misspell “beautiful” a lot. I never could quite remember that the “e” went before the “a”. It annoyed my teacher in high school endlessly. Eventually the “e” s and “a” s that were wrong placed in “beautiful” settled into their right places. I am glad I didn’t wait on them though. “Pretty” is easier to spell but it doesn’t hold as much as you mean sometimes.
And thanks to Mrs. White I had no concerns about writing what I meant, even if I couldn’t quite spell it out. Because life isn’t pretty. It’s beautiful.
24. What worried his mother when the author was in kindergarten
A. The teacher’s little attention to the author’s mistakes.
B. The teacher’s terrible attitude to the author.
C. The author’s unwillingness to go to school.
D. The author’s failure in exams and scrawl in homework.
25. What does the underlined word “dampen” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Increase. B. Inspire. C. Awaken. D. Reduce.
26. What can we learn from the fifth paragraph
A. The author finally succeeded in spelling “beautiful” correctly.
B. The teacher in high school disliked the author.
C. The author owed all his own spelling problems to Mrs. White.
D. The author preferred using the word “pretty”.
27. Which of the following can be used to describe Mrs. White
A. Humorous and kind. B. Warm-hearted and careful.
C. Honest and brave. D. Far-sighted and understanding.

Conflict(沖突)between parents and children is normal. It is part of family life. But conflict that goes on for a long time and gets worse over time can cause stress and can hurt relationships. It is important to communicate with each other and bring conflict to a peaceful solution. You can do this through compromise(讓步)or by agreeing to disagree. No matter what else you do, communicate with your children and make sure they know that you love them. This can make dealing with conflict easier and more effective.
In some cases, you may have to change your behaviour to settle a conflict with your child. Some of your child’s behaviour may be a reaction to your behaviour. So, if you want your child to behave in a certain way, one way may be to change your behaviour so that your child will follow your model.
But children should be responsible for their own actions —and the results. All parents want to protect their children. But in some cases, unless the child is in physical danger, it may be best to let the child deal with the negative results of things they do.
Collaborate(合作)to develop specific rules and write them down. These may include statements such as how much time they can spend on electronics, and when homework must be completed. Not only are you modeling for your kids how to work together and resolve differences, but you also are working out important guidelines for how your house will operate.
Have clear results for misconduct. Thus, if your child disobeys the rules, make it clear that the right to use the toy will be taken away because of his inability to play with it responsibly. Additionally, create routines so that they know when they have free time to themselves after they have completed tasks set out for them. These could include helping feed the family pet, taking a shower, or finishing homework.
28. What’s the key to solving the conflict between parents and children
A. Developing rules. B. Reaching an understanding.
C. Changing behavior. D. Advising children to give in.
29. Why do parents need to change their behavior first in the conflict
A. To set a good example for children. B. To find a reason to punish children.
C. To be responsible for their actions. D. To compromise with their children.
30. What should parents do if the child causes something bad to happen
A. Share the solutions with him. B. Let him deal with it himself.
C. Deal with the situation for him. D. Teach him how to solve it.
31. What does the underlined word “misconduct” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Direct words. B. Strict rules. C. Good performances. D. Improper behavior.

When we’re trying to decide which cell phone case to buy or which hotel room to book, we often rely on the ratings(評價)and reviews of others to help us choose. But research suggests that we tend to use this information in ways that can actually work to our disadvantage.
“It’s extremely common for websites and apps to display the average score of a product along with the number of reviews. Our research suggests that, in some cases, people might take this information and make bad decisions with it,” says researcher Derek Powell of Stanford University, the lead author on the study.
“We found that people were biased(有偏見的)toward choosing to buy more popular products and that this sometimes led them to make very poor decisions,” he explains.
As opportunities to buy products online increase, we can easily get first-hand information about users’experiences.
“We wanted to examine how people use this wealth of information when they make decisions, and specifically how they weigh information about other people’s decisions,” says Powell.
LookingatactualproductsavailableonAmazon.com, Powellandhiscolleaguesfoundnorelationship between the number of reviews a product had and its average rating. In other words, real-world data show that a large number of reviews are not a reliable indicator of a product’s quality.
In one online experiment,132 adult participants looked at a series of phone cases presented in pairs. The participants saw an average user rating and total number of reviews for each phone case and expressed which case in each pair they would buy.
Across various combinations of average rating and the number of reviews, participants usually chose the option(選項)with more reviews. This bias was so strong that they often preferred the more-reviewed phone case even when both of the options had low ratings, effectively choosing the product that was, in statistical(統計學的)terms, more likely to be low quality.
32. What is the focus of the research by Powell and his colleagues
A. How wealth influences consumers’choice of products.
B. How past experiences influence consumers’choice of products.
C. How product quality influences consumers’choice of products.
D. How information online influences consumers’choice of products.
33. What does Powell’s research show about people’s use of ratings and reviews while choosing products
A. It always lets people make poor decisions.
B. It leads to the bias that can result in poor decision-making.
C. It has little influence on people’s decision-making.
D. It allows users to choose fine quality products out of poor ones.
34. What do the participants’choices in the experiment show
A. They show a preference for higher-priced goods.
B. They balance quality and quantity(數量)of reviews well.
C. They prefer less-reviewed options to more-reviewed ones.
D. They often choose more-reviewed products even with low ratings.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Using reviews and ratings in buying product may be misleading.
B. Using first-hand information about users’experiences is a reasonable method.
C. Bias against quality products are common.
D. Using reviews and ratings in buying product is a future mainstream trend.

寫作范文
Dear Unknown Friend,
I understand completely how you feel about the study pressure. It’s a common challenge many students face. Here are some suggestions to help you.
Firstly, making a reasonable study plan can be of great use. You can do this by breaking down your tasks into smaller parts and setting achievable goals. This way, you won’t feel overwhelmed. What’s more, it is a good idea to take regular breaks during study. A short break every hour or so can refresh your mind and improve your efficiency. Thirdly, why not engage in some physical activities like jogging or playing ball games, which helps to relieve stress and keep you energetic. In addition, don’t be too hard on yourself. Mistakes and setbacks are part of the learning process. Believe in your abilities and stay positive.
I hope these suggestions will be useful to you. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey.
Yours,
Li Hua

M: One book each week. Maybe you should read more.
W: I totally agree.
