Michael Vargas Arango, diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder (分裂情感性障礙), wanted the world to know that it’s not something to be afraid of. Through his podcast(播客), The Monsters We Create, Vargas boldly declares, “I’m not dangerous. I’m not crazy. I’m just one more guy, with a mental health condition.” His openness and emotions struck the judges of NPR’s College Podcast Challenge, earning him a $5,000 scholarship.
The idea for his podcast stemmed from a conversation with his girlfriend, Elizabeth Pella. “Of course I had to tell her what is happening to me,” says the 22-year-old international student. It was a big deal for him to tell her. He was living far from his family back in Colombia, speaking his second language, and Pella would be the first person outside of his family he’d told.
The conversation went well, and Pella was understanding, curious, and loving. But she had one request: Don’t tell my friends. She was worried that they would judge him and even judge her. “I was scared.” she says, “and I wanted to protect him, too.”
Pella’s request didn’t sit well with Vargas. He didn’t just want to tell his girlfriend and her friends. Instead, he thought he should show everyone what it was like living in his head. In The Monsters We Create, Vargas provides a raw glimpse into his daily battles, conversing with the voices in his head. Through creative sound effects and metaphors, he breaks down stereotypes concerning mental illness.
After winning the NPR contest, he called his parents to tell them. Through tears, his mom, Olga Arango, told him in Spanish that she’s crying for joy, for happiness. “I know that we’re blessed with a really beautiful person, and every day I tell him not to change,” says his mom to NPR.
Not changing, Vargas says, is the biggest lesson he learned in telling his story. He says he’s no longer scared to tell people who he really is.

It’s almost expected that you will experience peer pressure frequently throughout your teen years. Say you’re invited to a party where you know there will be alcohol. A friend decides to cut class. Or someone offers you a cigarette. How do you respond
At some point, everyone has the desire to fit into a group. If you’re interested in sports, you might hang out with the jocks. If you’re interested in music, you spend time with others who enjoy music. You belong to that group and feel secure when you are part of it. The group identifies who you are and what you’re about. But what if people in your group start doing things that are wrong, hurtful, or even illegal And what if these same people are your friends
This is what we refer to as peer pressure-the pressure to conform to the behaviors, attitudes, and personal habits of the group. In many cases, there are serious risks involved. Unfortunately, most teenagers feel invulnerable, like “nothing bad can ever happen to me”. But you need to assess the risks well in advance.
On the other hand, you can use peer pressure to your advantage. Think of it as competitive peer pressure. For example, if you’re active in sports, your teammates probably pressure you to be the best you can be. If you’re on the track team, you pace yourself with the fastest runner, because you know it will make you better. If you’re striving for good grades, you compare your scores to those at the top of the list. If you’re in the band, and there are musicians better than you, you are pressured into striving to be the best musician you can be.

A new analysis of years of vocalizations by sperm whales in the eastern Caribbean has found that their system of communication is more sophisticated than previously known, exhibiting a complex internal structure with a “phonetic alphabet”. Sperm whales, the largest of the toothed whales, communicate using bursts of clicking noises—called codas—sounding a bit like Morse code. The researchers identified similarities to aspects of other animal communication systems—and even human language.
The researchers are part of the Project CETI Machine Learning Team. Using traditional statistical analysis and artificial intelligence, they examined calls made by about 60 whales recorded by the Dominica Sperm Whale Project, a research program that has collected large amounts of data on the species.
“Why are they exchanging these codas What information might they be sharing ” asked study co-author Shane Gero, Project CETI’s lead biologist and Dominica Sperm Whale Project founder, affiliated with Carleton University in Canada. “I think it’s likely that they use codas to coordinate (協調) as a family, organize babysitting, hunting and defense,” Gero explained.
Variations in the number, rhythm and tempo of the clicks produced different types of codas, the researchers found. The whales, among other things, altered the duration of the codas and sometimes added an extra click at the end, like a suffix in human language.
People combine sounds-often corresponding to letters of the alphabet-to produce words that carry meaning, and then produce sequences of (連串的) words to create sentences to convey more complex meanings. For people， there are two levels of combination. The lower level is sounds to words. The higher level is words to sentences. Sperm whales also use a two-level combination of features-first form codas, and then codas are sequenced together as the whales communicate.
“Human language is unique in many ways,” Gero said. “But I suspect we will find many patterns, structures and aspects thought to be unique to humans in other species, including whales, as science e progresses--and perhaps also 1teatures and aspects 5of animal communications which humans do not possess.”

M: This is Amacing Science. I’m Jerry Smith. The first human moon landing happened more than 50 years ago. But did you know that human astronauts were not the first creatures to travel in space and circle the moon That honor goes to two Russian tortoises. In 1968, the Soviet space program sent two tortoises into space for a trip around the moon. After a week-long trip, the tortoises landed on Earth in the Indian Ocean. They traveled back to Moscow on October 7, and were studied thoroughly on October 11, 1968 to see how their bodies were affected. Study showed that “the main changes were caused by a lack of food but not the space travel”. The tortoises had lost about 10 percent of their body weight. But they had stayed active and showed no loss of appetite. While tortoises were the first to travel around the moon, other animals, like monkeys, dogs, mice and cats, had helped humans understand and explore space. In 1948, the US began launching monkeys into space. On November 3, 1957, a dog was sent up into space by the Soviet Union. Believe it or not, animals contributed a lot to space exploration.
