Curriculum standard analysis Student-centered approach Curriculum design attaches great importance to students' existing knowledge level and interest points. By guiding students to observe pictures, watch videos, participate in group discussions and other activities, students' active participation awareness and critical thinking are stimulated. Integration of multiple teaching methods Comprehensive use of a variety of teaching methods, such as problem-oriented method, task-driven method, etc. Such rich and diverse teaching methods can meet the needs of students with different learning styles, thus significantly improving the teaching effectiveness. 3. Based on the core literacy goal under the new curriculum standard, on the basis of the traditional teaching mode of "before reading- -during- -after reading", and designed according to the idea of "learning, understanding- -application practice- -transfer and innovation".
Teaching material analysis The reading lesson is selected from Book 4 Unit 5. It talks about the great scientist Yuan Longping, mainly about his identity, education, research, achievements, qualities and his dreams. By reading the passage, students could have a deeper understanding of Dr Yuan’s life choices and it is helpful to for students to follow the role model to shoulder the responsibility to society and know more about agriculture.
Students’ situation analysis As senior students, they have some background information about agriculture and Dr.Yuan but their abilities of analyzing the text and extracting information efficiently still need improving. At present, students’ values and outlook on life is being formed so learning this passage is quite educational and helpful.

Step1 Leading in Show a poem about Yuan and his quote. Ask a question:What do you know about Yuan Longping Read the poem together and know Yuan’s pursuit. Tell students what they have known about Yuan. Introduce the topic of this lesson and the quote from Yuan on opening page. Let students get a basic understanding about Yuan.
Step2 Pre- reading Show two pictures of pioneer to students, let students guess the meaning of “pioneer”. Students guess the meaning of “pioneer” Improve students' ability to guess words based on context and the ability to analyse the title.
Step3 While- reading Step3 While- reading Skimming: Guide students to skim for the main idea of each and summarize structure of the passage. Para1: Q: What are Yuan’s identities from para.1 Para2: Q: Why did Yuan Longping decide to study agriculture Para3: Q1:How did Yuan Longping develop hybrid rice (Show 5 important verbs.) Q2:What’s people’s opinion about Yuan’s idea Para4: Q:In what way does the writer develop Para4 (Give some numbers) Show Yuan’s awards and his quote to bring out para5. Para 5: Q1: What does Yuan Longping do with his large amounts of money Q2:What do other people think Yuan might do with money Q3:How does the author show Yuan Longping’s qualities Para6: Show a video which is about this paragraph and guide students to find Yuan’s visions . 1.Skim the article, match the key words with each paragraph and pay attention to the structure. 2.Read para.1 together and answer the question to find Yuan’s identities and devotion. 3.Read para.2 and answer the question to know Yuan’s education. 4.Read para.3 and find some sentences with 5 verbs. Fill in blanks and answer questions. 5.Answer questions and think about his contributions and influence. Think about the question:Did Yuan care about money or his reputation, to realize the topic of next paragraph. 6.Answer questions to find Yuan’s qualities and realize the way of description-contrast. 7.Read para.6 and try to complete the chart about his dreams. 1.Clarify the main idea of each paragraph,the structure and main focus of the passage. 2.Understand Yuan Longping's identity, devotion and train the ability to look for detailed information. 3.Know about Yuan Longping's education and train students' ability to look for detailed information. 4.With a clue“how has Yuan develop hybrid rice ”, students can obtain the detailed information by asking questions. According to some details, students can conclude other’s attitude about Yuan’s idea of hybrid rice. 5. Guide students to understand Yuan’s contributions and influence by reading tasks, to master key information. 6.Exercise students' ability to organize and summarize information. 7.Guide students to understand the content of the article deeply, and master key information of para.6.
Step4 Post- reading. Thinking and discussion. Please think and discuss these two questions in groups. And then write Yuan’s actions and his qualities based on his actions. Q1: Why is Yuan Longping called “a pioneer for all people” Q2:What qualities make a person like Yuan Longping Pay attention to all important verbs and make a conclusion about Yuan’s actions and qualities. Students can complete their learning tasks in group, and in the process of sharing, they can use new words to describe and explain them, so as to deepen their understanding of the text. In the process of thinking and solving problems, students can also experience the fun of group cooperation and English reading. Summarize what has been learned in the class and sublimate the theme.
