When Ben Cheng, 63, finished a bicycle journey along the ancient Silk Road in June, she immediately began planning her next trip. Ben was a teacher who comes from Changchun, Jilin Province. She has cycled more than 100,000 kilometers over the last eight years.
“I have kept up all kinds of sports, such as swimming and mountain climbing, for many years,” she said. “After retirement (退休), I had more time for my interests and I found cycling to be a good choice.”
She began cycling in the Changchun suburbs (郊區) in 2013 after her retirement at 55. In May 2015, she started her first long journey—a trip around Bohai Bay. It took her 24 days to complete the 2,655—kilometer trip, and the success pushed her to do more.
In recent years, she has finished several long journeys across China, including a ride around Qinghai Lake in Qinghai Province and other trips in Hainan Province and Taiwan.
Together with several other cycling lovers, Ben started the ancient Silk Road journey from Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, on May 21. She crossed the cities of Lanzhou, Wuwei, Jiuquan, Dunhuang and Jiayuguan in Gansu Province and finally arrived in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (自治區), on June 18.
“During the 3,000—km journey, I enjoyed the beautiful scenery (景色),” she said. “However, I also met difficulties, such as storms and terrible road conditions.”
“Luckily, I kept on and finally reached my journey’s end,” she said. “I hope more people will take cycling as an exercise. It is more friendly to environment.”

When we talk about Chinese handmade paper, you probably think of Xuan paper. However, there are different kinds in different places, and Lianshi paper from Fujian is one of them.
Going back 400 years, Lianshi paper is made by hand using bamboo. According to Fujian Daily, Lianshi paper weighs only 19 grams (克) every square meter, but it is strong. Thanks to this, Lianshi paper was listed as a provincial intangible cultural heritage (省級非物質文化遺產) in Fujian in 2008.
Deng Jinkun,54, has been learning to make Lianshi paper for 30 years. He said making Lianshi paper has 72 steps, including cutting bamboo, soaking (浸濕), making pulp (紙漿), and drying. What makes it stand out is its bleaching (漂白) technology. “In May each year, bamboo is cut off, and soaked in lime (石灰) twice. The bamboo is then heated at a high temperature. After that, it’s bleached on the mountain for four months,” Deng said. The natural bleaching process makes it white, he added.
Besides carrying on traditional art, Deng also brought in new ideas at the same time. Traditionally the pulp is collected using a wooden shelf held by two people. “Our Lianshi paper needs only one person as we use strings to hang one side,” Deng said.
When they heat the paper, the baking wall is also special. According to Deng, other places use lime to make the wall. “After a trip to the University of Science and Technology of China in 2018, I decided to use a special kind of clay to make the wall so that it lasts longer,” he said. After it is built, the baking wall can be used to make paper for 40 years.
