Over the past year, Philip Loveday, 16, has been revisiting his grandmother’s path across the capital to carefully rephotograph the pictures. Philip took new photos that looked like the ones Scilla took long ago, and put them in a new album. Each page of Scilla’s old album was copied and put in the new one, with Philip’s new photos on the opposite pages. Philip’s mother, Catherine Loveday, said Scilla had been happy with the new album, which had “put her back in her shoes” as a teenager.
Philip said his mother showed him the album she had found at her mother’s house. Greatly absorbed in how modern London would compare to the city photographed by his grandmother, Philip and his mother began to make trips into central London. During the trips, they had the idea of retaking the photos.
Some of the places are similar, like Big Ben. Others show how the city has modernized. Unlike Scilla’s view of St. Paul’s Cathedral from the Thames, Philip’s retake has the Millenium Bridge. On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicted (預(yù)測(cè)) that 42% of Americans could be overweight by 2030. Our increasing weights lead to not only a medical problem, but according to a recent article in The New York Times, it could also endanger personal safety in some situations-in an airplane crash, for example.
The New York Times’ Christen Negroni reports that engineers and scientists are questioning whether airplane seats are strong enough to protect overweight travelers. Government standards for airplane seat strength-first set more than 60 years ago-require that the seats be made for a passenger weighing 170 pounds (77kg), Today, the average (平均的) American man weighs, nearly194 pounds (88kg) and the average woman 165 pounds (75kg), Negroni reports:
“If a heavier person completely fills seat, the seat is not likely to act as planned during a crash,” said Robert Salazar, the leading scientist at the Center for Applied Biomechanics at the University of Virginia. “The energy absorption (能量吸收) that is built into the airplane seat is likely to be overpowered and the passengers will not be protected properly.”
“Nor would the injury be limited to that passenger only,” Dr. Salzar said. “If a seat or a seat belt fails,” he said, “those people who are seated nearby could be endangered from ‘the uncontrolled movements of the passenger’.”
Most of the dissatisfaction with airplane seats focuses on their being less comfortable and high ticket price, and whether overweight passengers should be made to buy two seats. But The New York Times’ article brings up another reason to feel anxious about flying. Researchers got in touch with the airplane seat and seat belt makers, but they refused to comment on the problem. Experts agreed that crash testing should be done with overweight models. Both airplane seats and seat belts should be tested, they said.
Luckily, however, according to Nora Marshall, a senior adviser at the National Transportation Safety Board, the board’s researchers have never seen an accident relating to a commercial plane in which the weight of a passenger was a problem.

A Japanese city is using AI (人工智能) to help with the problem of kids not wanting to go to school. They look at students’ information to see who might stop coming because of worries, being bullied (欺凌), or other problems.
In a city near Tokyo, they tested an Al system for a year. They wanted to help teachers find students who are having a hard time. In Japan, more and more kids are not going to school for a long time. In 2022, almost 300,000 kids didn’t go to school for 30 days or more.
The AI system looks at things like how often kids go to school, how well they do in school, and if they are healthy. It also looks at if they visit the school nurse a lot or if there are reports about them being bullied.
The system then uses past data (數(shù)據(jù)) to see how likely it is that a student will stop going to school. It gives each student a color, from red (highest risk) to yellow (lowest risk).
In the test, the program said 1,193 students were at high risk. Teachers decided that 265 of them needed help right away.
To keep kids’ information safe, the city made rules about how to use the data and not to treat students unfairly because of the AI’s predictions (預(yù)測(cè)). They also told parents they could say no to using their kids’ data. Only important people in the school, like headmasters, could see the results.
“By using real information, we might be able to stop kids from not wanting to go to school,” said Makiko Nakamuro, a professor from Keio University and an expert on education. “But we have to think really hard about keeping their data safe by telling them clearly why and how we use their information,” she also said.

The photographs that Scilla took as a 16-year-old girl on the streets of London in 1955 stayed largely in her album (相冊(cè)) over the years. Scilla is now 83, and her self-developed black-and-white photos have been brought back to life after they were discovered by a teenage photographer.
Over the past year, Philip Loveday, 16, has been revisiting his grandmother’s path across the capital to carefully rephotograph the pictures. When Scilla photographed the John Lewis store on Oxford Street, it was a one-storey building — now it has seven floors. Philip had to use his imagination to recreate other sights. Scilla has repeatedly returned to her new album since receiving it. Philip said: “It’s nice for her to see someone taking an interest in those photos and going back over them, and also good for her to connect her past to where we are now.”

On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicted (預(yù)測(cè)) that 42% of Americans could be overweight by 2030. Our increasing weights lead to not only a medical problem, but according to a recent article in The New York Times, it could also endanger personal safety in some situations-in an airplane crash, for example.
The New York Times’ Christen Negroni reports that engineers and scientists are questioning whether airplane seats are strong enough to protect overweight travelers. Government standards for airplane seat strength-first set more than 60 years ago-require that the seats be made for a passenger weighing 170 pounds (77kg), Today, the average (平均的) American man weighs, nearly194 pounds (88kg) and the average woman 165 pounds (75kg), Negroni reports:
“If a heavier person completely fills seat, the seat is not likely to act as planned during a crash,” said Robert Salazar, the leading scientist at the Center for Applied Biomechanics at the University of Virginia. “The energy absorption (能量吸收) that is built into the airplane seat is likely to be overpowered and the passengers will not be protected properly.”
“Nor would the injury be limited to that passenger only,” Dr. Salzar said. “If a seat or a seat belt fails,” he said, “those people who are seated nearby could be endangered from ‘the uncontrolled movements of the passenger’.”
Most of the dissatisfaction with airplane seats focuses on their being less comfortable and high ticket price, and whether overweight passengers should be made to buy two seats. But The New York Times’ article brings up another reason to feel anxious about flying. Researchers got in touch with the airplane seat and seat belt makers, but they refused to comment on the problem. Experts agreed that crash testing should be done with overweight models. Both airplane seats and seat belts should be tested, they said.
Luckily, however, according to Nora Marshall, a senior adviser at the National Transportation Safety Board, the board’s researchers have never seen an accident relating to a commercial plane in which the weight of a passenger was a problem.

A Japanese city is using AI (人工智能) to help with the problem of kids not wanting to go to school. They look at students’ information to see who might stop coming because of worries, being bullied (欺凌), or other problems.
In a city near Tokyo, they tested an Al system for a year. They wanted to help teachers find students who are having a hard time. In Japan, more and more kids are not going to school for a long time. In 2022, almost 300,000 kids didn’t go to school for 30 days or more.
The AI system looks at things like how often kids go to school, how well they do in school, and if they are healthy. It also looks at if they visit the school nurse a lot or if there are reports about them being bullied.
The system then uses past data (數(shù)據(jù)) to see how likely it is that a student will stop going to school. It gives each student a color, from red (highest risk) to yellow (lowest risk).
In the test, the program said 1,193 students were at high risk. Teachers decided that 265 of them needed help right away.
To keep kids’ information safe, the city made rules about how to use the data and not to treat students unfairly because of the AI’s predictions (預(yù)測(cè)). They also told parents they could say no to using their kids’ data. Only important people in the school, like headmasters, could see the results.
“By using real information we might be able to stop kids from not wanting to go to school,” said Makiko Nakamuro, a professor from Keio University and an expert on education. “But we have to think really hard about keeping their data safe by telling them clearly why and how we use their information,” she also said.
