My coworker Sophia announced that she was pregnant with her third child. This would be my first time working with her while she was pregnant, so when the discussion came about whether we should pool together our money for some baby gifts, I was excited and was all in. We also decided to turn it into a small party, and we would each make a dish for lunch.
The difficult part of this is my coworker is allergic (過敏的) to many things — dairy, shellfish, tomatoes, certain fruits, and many more things. We have talked about her allergies before when discussing what to get for takeout lunches, but we hadn’t committed the list to memory. Over the course of two or three weeks, we would try to have her allergies naturally come into conversation, and write down the good foods and the bad foods. When we were pretty confident that we had gotten enough, we shared the list with everyone in the office.
The day of the party arrived, and we set up the table while my coworker was on her morning break. When she came back, we led her to the table, and she was surprised by all of the gifts. Once she opened the gifts, we started to bring out lunch. We went around the room explaining our dishes and what ingredients were included and excluded (排除). She realized we had all made the dishes specifically to fit with her diet, and she burst into tears, saying that it was one of the nicest things that had happened to her.
It was a rewarding feeling, to be able to do something so small as make lunch for someone and get that reaction. Going forward, we don’t make everything without her allergens (過敏原), but we do make sure there are at least a few dishes she can have, and we prevent cross-pollution whenever possible.

Edie’s alarm goes off at 4: 00 a. m. She gets up folds up the bed in the garage that is her apartment and workshop. She considers herself to be very lucky to have this garage. The only people that live in houses these days are multi-millionaires from all over the world, especially from Arizona and other southern states, wishing to move to Canada with its cooler climate and plentiful water. They can afford the million-dollar immigrant visa fee.
At that time, there are no office or industrial jobs anymore: Artificial Intelligence and robots will take care of that. The few jobs left are in service, culture or health care. Luckily, Edie has her job.
She checks the balance in her Personal Carbon Allowance (PCA) account to see if she has enough to buy another battery for her e-bike. If she doesn’t have enough then she will have to buy carbon credits, and they are expensive. Recently, South Australia has committed an additional $17.1 million to the National Fire Ant Eradication Program to fight against one of the world’s most invasive pests—the red imported fire ant.
They might be only 2-6mm long, but they can destroy crops and machinery, and make yards, parks, and farmlands unusable. They can also damage electrical equipment including streetlights and telecommunication networks. And they can bring a painful sting (叮) that has the potential to cause a deadly allergic reaction in people, pets and livestock.
The red fire ants, which were from South American countries and were first discovered in Brisbane in 2001, have not been discovered in South Australia and currently are only present in Queensland and New South Wales (NSW). But they can spread to new territory quickly. Five nests (巢) were ascertained in northern NSW in November 2023. The ants generally spread through human activity, mainly the moving of polluted soil, plants or agricultural machinery, and once in a new area, they can rapidly establish a new nest.
The National Fire Ant Eradication Program includes a four-year response plan worth $ 592.8 million, which will use the latest technology and innovative approaches to eventually sweep away fire ants. The State Government’s latest funding commitment is on top of $6.5 million already committed to the program.
Reece Pianta, Advocacy Manager with the Invasive Species Council, said “Fire ants are one of the world’s worst super-pests and if they are allowed to spread, their economic impact will be greater than rabbits, feral cats and foxes combined. They will damage Australia’s environment and agriculture, cost our economy billions annually and we could see hundreds of thousands of extra medical visits every year as they sting Australians at the park or in the backyard.”

My coworker Sophia announced that she was pregnant with her third child. This would be my first time working with her while she was pregnant, so when the discussion came about whether we should pool together our money for some baby gifts, I was excited and was all in. We also decided to turn it into a small party, and we would each make a dish for lunch.
The difficult part of this is my coworker is allergic (過敏的) to many things — dairy, shellfish, tomatoes, certain fruits, and many more things. We have talked about her allergies before when discussing what to get for takeout lunches, but we hadn’t committed the list to memory. Over the course of two or three weeks, we would try to have her allergies naturally come into conversation, and write down the good foods and the bad foods. When we were pretty confident that we had gotten enough, we shared the list with everyone in the office.
The day of the party arrived, and we set up the table while my coworker was on her morning break. When she came back, we led her to the table, and she was surprised by all of the gifts. Once she opened the gifts, we started to bring out lunch. We went around the room explaining our dishes and what ingredients were included and excluded (排除). She realized we had all made the dishes specifically to fit with her diet, and she burst into tears, saying that it was one of the nicest things that had happened to her.
It was a rewarding feeling, to be able to do something so small as make lunch for someone and get that reaction. Going forward, we don’t make everything without her allergens (過敏原), but we do make sure there are at least a few dishes she can have, and we prevent cross-pollution whenever possible.

New Scientist magazine’s chief reporter Adam Vaughan recently published “How your day will look in a carbon- neutral (碳中和) world.” Here, he imagines what a typical day would be like in the future — through the eyes of Isla, “a child in 2050” — after we’ve cut carbon emissions (排放). Vaughan acknowledges the writing is out of imagination but it is concluded by research, expert opinion, and experiments happening right now.
Isla lives in the United Kingdom — will it still be a united kingdom in 2050 — and her life looks pretty much like life does today: She has a house, a car and a job. There are forests, and giant machines taking carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) out of the atmosphere. It all sounds like a green and pleasant land, but it didn’t sound like the future to me. It’s just like the life we are living now.
It’s an interesting exercise, imagining what it will be like in about 30 years. I thought I would give it a try: Here is my story about Edie, living in Toronto, Canada in 2050.
Edie’s alarm goes off at 4: 00 a. m. She gets up, folds up the bed in the garage that is her apartment and workshop. She considers herself to be very lucky to have this garage. The only people that live in houses these days are multi-millionaires from all over the world, especially from Arizona and other southern states, wishing to move to Canada with its cooler climate and plentiful water. They can afford the million-dollar immigrant visa fee.
At that time, there are no office or industrial jobs anymore: Artificial Intelligence and robots will take care of that. The few jobs left are in service, culture or health care. Luckily, Edie has her job.
She checks the balance in her Personal Carbon Allowance (PCA) account to see if she has enough to buy another battery for her e-bike. If she doesn’t have enough then she will have to buy carbon credits, and they are expensive. She sets her alarm for 6: 00 p. m. when the streets of Toronto will come alive again on this hot November day.

Recently, South Australia has committed an additional $17.1 million to the National Fire Ant Eradication Program to fight against one of the world’s most invasive pests—the red imported fire ant.
They might be only 2-6mm long, but they can destroy crops and machinery, and make yards, parks, and farmlands unusable. They can also damage electrical equipment including streetlights and telecommunication networks. And they can bring a painful sting (叮) that has the potential to cause a deadly allergic reaction in people, pets and livestock.
The red fire ants, which were from South American countries and were first discovered in Brisbane in 2001, have not been discovered in South Australia and currently are only present in Queensland and New South Wales (NSW). But they can spread to new territory quickly. Five nests (巢) were ascertained in northern NSW in November 2023. The ants generally spread through human activity, mainly the moving of polluted soil, plants or agricultural machinery, and once in a new area, they can rapidly establish a new nest.
The National Fire Ant Eradication Program includes a four-year response plan worth $ 592.8 million, which will use the latest technology and innovative approaches to eventually sweep away fire ants. The State Government’s latest funding commitment is on top of $6.5 million already committed to the program.
Reece Pianta, Advocacy Manager with the Invasive Species Council, said “Fire ants are one of the world’s worst super-pests and if they are allowed to spread, their economic impact will be greater than rabbits, feral cats and foxes combined. They will damage Australia’s environment and agriculture, cost our economy billions annually and we could see hundreds of thousands of extra medical visits every year as they sting Australians at the park or in the backyard.”
