He was the last person who should have run into a burning building — he had lung disease. But that didn’t stop him. Michael Surrell and his wife had just parked their car when they got a call from their daughter: “The house next door is on fire!” He went to investigate.
Though the fire department had been called, Surrell ran inside. The thick smoke burned his eyes and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous for anyone, but for Surrell, they were life-threatening.
Minutes later, he went outside to catch his breath. Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The house was similar to his, so he made it to the second floor. He couldn’t see anything. All he could hear was the crackling of burning wood. Then a soft voice came. Surrell crawled (爬行) toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl.
Finally, he touched something. He pulled Tiara toward him and held her into his arms and stood. He fought through the smoke and ran into the blackness. What will astronauts wear in the future A brand-new spacesuit is developing. Called the Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EEMU), the spacesuit protects astronauts from the tough environment of the moon surface, which is quite different from that astronauts have been exploring for the past few decades in low Earth orbit.
Progress on the suit has been disappointing. “The EEMU represents the first new spacesuit that NASA has developed in over 40 years,” George Nield, previously the associate administrator for commercial space transportation at the Federal Aviation Administration, said, “Now, it looks like things are on schedule.”
Nield outlined the agency’s plan to build five EEMU suits in the initial (最初的) group. One for design tests is almost done and should be completed in December. A second will be built for qualification tests and a third will be tested in orbit on the International Space Station. The final two suits of the set will walk on the moon in 2024 on a mission called Artemis 3.
In addition to the main spacesuits, each astronaut will also require an internal cooling garment, and NASA has now completed the first prototype (原型) of that undergarment, according to Nield. And the agency also needs to upgrade the backpack-like Portable Life Support System astronauts carry to stay alive.
Meanwhile, NASA got a sense of how the new suit will perform on the moon by testing the design underwater. Underwater, astronauts can get a feel for moving around in a spacesuit and using the tools they will operate during a spacewalk. Lately, NASA has been using the pool to study movements like collecting moon rock and dust and planting a flag in the moon surface.

The earth is warming. The past years are the warmest on record. Greenhouse gases from human activities are responsible for 1.1°C of average warming in the 20th century. What we’re experiencing is different from the global average. We experience extreme weather — serious heatwaves, violent storms and historic floods.
We won’t feel the impact of our efforts for decades. But we must know our future today so we can act now. To develop the best strategies for adaptation, we need climate models to predict the climate in different areas over decades. Unlike predicting the weather, climate models are difficult modeling the physics, chemistry and biology of the atmosphere, waters, ice, land and human activities.
Greater resolution (分辨率) is needed to model changes in the global climate. Scientists estimate that it will demand billions of times more computing power than what’s available. It will take decades to achieve that through the ordinary course of computing advances.
For the first time, we have the technology to do that. We can achieve million-x speedups by combining three technologies: GPU-accelerated computing; breakthroughs in physics-informed neural (神經) networks and AI supercomputers, along with vast quantities of data to learn from. With these techniques, we may have within our grasp the billion-x leap needed to do the climate modeling. And with more accurate predictions, people and nations will act correctly.
This week, plans to build the world’s most powerful AI supercomputer used to predict climate change are announced. Named Earth-2, the system will create a digital twin of the Earth. The system would be the climate change to Cambridge-l, the world’s most powerful AI supercomputer for healthcare research.

I’ve had the pleasure and good fortune to live and work in several countries as an ESL(English as a Second Language)teacher. During one assignment(任務), I lived in Prague in the Czech Republic. I often took weekend trips to nearby cities to explore the countryside.

To avoid having the same thing happen again, I only carried enough cash to cover my expenses for the day. I certainly did not have enough money to stay in a hotel. But with no transportation to Prague and being a positive person, I decided to try asking.
I first found the Youth Hotel, but it was completely full. Setting aside 5 crowns for the bus fare, I had 9 crowns to spend. Every hotel I tried to check into charged 22 to 25 crowns, until I had only one more recommendation. If it was too expensive, I’d have to spend the night on a park bench, an uncomfortable idea for someone almost 60 years old.
The hotel looked much nicer than I expected. It would surely cost more than 9 crowns. The desk clerk spoke some English, so I told her my story.

What will astronauts wear in the future A brand-new spacesuit is developing. Called the Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EEMU), the spacesuit protects astronauts from the tough environment of the moon surface, which is quite different from that astronauts have been exploring for the past few decades in low Earth orbit.
Progress on the suit has been disappointing. “The EEMU represents the first new spacesuit that NASA has developed in over 40 years,” George Nield, previously the associate administrator for commercial space transportation at the Federal Aviation Administration, said, “Now, it looks like things are on schedule.”
Nield outlined the agency’s plan to build five EEMU suits in the initial (最初的) group. One for design tests is almost done and should be completed in December.
