At the end of a perfect July afternoon in 2016, Raymond awoke from an accident only to find that he’d damage a his neck and could no longer walk or fully use his hands.
But that’s just the beginning of Raymond’s story. A year later, frustrated with the lack of rehab(康復(fù)) resources available for people like himself in New Orleans, the former broadcast engineer decided that his hometown needed an adaptive gym to cater for those with injuries and disabilities. Based on the need, Raymond financed the establishment of Split Second Fitness in 2021, with specially designed workout equipment and therapy programs that allow clients to grow stronger without the aim of making money.
The inspiration for Split Second Fitness came to Raymond as he spent three months at a state-of-the-art rehab center in Sacramento, which redefined his understanding of recovery. “I knew I had to get back home and figure out how to do that,” says the natural-born net-worker, who spent three years raising funds and learning how to run an organization.
Seated bikes help move disabled users’ legs; yoga instructors help stroke survivors increase flexibility and range of motion; mental health experts facilitate the hard transition to a new way of living. “Anybody’s life can change in a spit second like mine did,” explains Raymond. “What our organization is really centered around is ‘How do we give you hope ’ and ‘How can we help you transform that hope into action steps for you to create a better tomorrow ’”
“The aim is to increase the quality of life of those with a disability,” he says. “Because if I can give you something to look forward to, it will help you get out of the painful process and help you get back on track to a happy and healthy life.” Raymond, who insists he’s just getting started, says that he plans to open similar gyms across the nation. “I want to be remembered as someone who moved the needle on disability advocacy issues ”

When the sun reaches its peak activity, known as solar maximum, its magnetic (磁的) field will reverse (逆轉(zhuǎn)). This happens roughly every l1 years, marking an important stage in the solar cycle. “But there is another important, less-known cycle, the Hale cycle. This magnetic cycle lasts approximately 22 years, through which the sun’s magnetic field reverses and then reverts to its original state,” Ryan French, a solar astrophysicist, said.
“During solar minimum, the sun’s magnetic field is close to a dipole (偶極子), with one north pole and one south pole, similar to Earth’s magnetic field. But as we shift toward solar maximum, the sun’s magnetic field becomes more complex, without a clear north-south pole separation,” French said. By the time solar maximum passes and solar minimum arrives, the sun has returned to a dipole.
The upcoming switch in polarity will be from the northern to southern magnetic field in the Northern Hemisphere and vice versa in the Southern Hemisphere. “This will bring it to a similar magnetic orientation to Earth, which also has its southern-pointing magnetic field in the Northern Hemisphere,” French explained.

Last September, Fernando Trujillo first received frightening news from Brazil’s Lago de Tefé via phone calls from his colleagues and fellow scientists, who were in a state of panic. The uncontrolled 2023 summer had been heating the Amazonia lake to temperatures far beyond anything previously recorded, and as they had feared, something was now happening to the pink river dolphins. “Three dead dolphins,” Trujillo remembers. “Then five dead dolphins. Then 20 dead dolphins. Then 70 dead dolphins, in one day.”
For Trujillo, a Colombian marine biologist and National Geographic explorer who has become a global advocate for river dolphins, the Tefé disaster must be understood as both a tragedy and a much needed lesson in the vulnerability (脆弱性) of these freshwater ambassadors. Over just a few days, 157 dolphins — 10 percent of the lake’s population — died in that overheated water, whose temperature pushed above 102 °F. The exact cause was still under investigation two months later, but heat stress seemed the likeliest explanation.
Trujillo thinks that the sudden attention to the mass deaths may help people grasp other threats — habitat loss, poisoned waters, overfishing and killing — that end anger river dolphins in all 14 countries where they’re found. He has been committed to the work ever since he was a university student. At that time, the respectable oceanographer Jacques Cousteau visited his class. “I asked him what would be important to study. And he said, ‘Dolphins. It was kind of like an order,'” Trujillo says.
As part of the Perpetual Planet Amazon Expedition, a series of scientific research projects spanning the Amazon River Basin, Trujillo is also helping coordinate international conservation commitments like the Global Declaration for River Dolphins. “And the main point is that it’s not just about the dolphins,” he says. “It’s about the rivers, and the 1.5 billion people living there. The dolphins, for me, are connecting the general public to all the problems in the region. And the general public is listening.”

At the end of a perfect July afternoon in 2016, Raymond awoke from an accident only to find that he’d damage a his neck and could no longer walk or fully use his hands.
But that’s just the beginning of Raymond’s story. Seated bikes help move disabled users’ legs; yoga instructors help stroke survivors increase flexibility and range of motion; mental health experts facilitate the hard transition to a new way of living. “Anybody’s life can change in a spit second like mine did,” explains Raymond. “What our organization is really centered around is ‘How do we give you hope ’ and ‘How can we help you transform that hope into action steps for you to create a better tomorrow ’”
“The aim is to increase the quality of life of those with a disability,” he says. “Because if I can give you something to look forward to, it will help you get out of the painful process and help you get back on track to a happy and healthy life.” Raymond, who insists he’s just getting started, says that he plans to open similar gyms across the nation. “I want to be remembered as someone who moved the needle on disability advocacy issues ”

Last September, Fernando Trujillo first received frightening news from Brazil’s Lago de Tefé via phone calls from his colleagues and fellow scientists, who were in a state of panic. The uncontrolled 2023 summer had been heating the Amazonia lake to temperatures far beyond anything previously recorded, and as they had feared, something was now happening to the pink river dolphins. “Three dead dolphins,” Trujillo remembers. “Then five dead dolphins. Over just a few days, 157 dolphins — 10 percent of the lake’s population — died in that overheated water, whose temperature pushed above 102 °F. The exact cause was still under investigation two months later, but heat stress seemed the likeliest explanation.
Trujillo thinks that the sudden attention to the mass deaths may help people grasp other threats — habitat loss, poisoned waters, overfishing and killing — that end anger river dolphins in all 14 countries where they’re found. He has been committed to the work ever since he was a university student.
