There were many plants in a forest. When spring came, a pine tree saw a red rose nearby and said, “What a beautiful flower! I wish I were that lovely.”
The rose proudly (傲慢地) said, “It seems that I am the most beautiful flower in this forest.” Then the rose looked at a cactus (仙人掌) and said, “Look at that ugly plant full of thorns (刺).”

Mount Everest also known as Sagarmatha（尼泊爾語：珠穆朗瑪峰） is the highest mountain in the world with the height of 8848.86 meters. It is part of the Himalayas that runs across Nepal, China, India, Pakistan, Bhutan and Afghanistan.
Climbing Mount Everest is challenging. It takes a lot of preparation and training for climbers to reach the top. The first people to reach the top of Mount Everest were Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa from Nepal in 1953. Since then, thousands of climbers have tried to reach the top of Mount Everest, but not all have been successful. But a group of Chinese climbers made it in 1960. The climbing is dangerous and requires a lot of skills and experience.
Mount Everest is not only famous for its height, but also for its wonderful views. The mountain is covered with thick snow all the time and there’re many beautiful valleys (山谷). It is also home to many plants and animals, including snow leopards, Himalayan black bears and musk deer.

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears．
One explanation（解釋） is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials (嘗試) increase the length of time we will remember it．
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn．
The multiplication tables (乘法口訣表) are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood．
The law of overlearning explains why cramming (突擊學習) for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. I looked at the website. Was it to late to quit Actually, I had just signed up for a coaching group that was meant to “encourage me through running”. Giving up before I even started seemed like a terribly shameful thing to do. I looked through the photos of the race.
I lost all my confidence. Runners wearing headlights and running shoes filled the computer screen. I couldn’t do this, I thought. I hadn’t run on paths in Delaware. I hadn’t run on paths or up hills. I clicked onto the next photo and looked at the happy runners advancing alongside a frightening cliff (峭壁). I was also afraid of heights.

Last month, my English teacher told us about an English speech competition. Encouraged by my teacher and classmates, I signed up for it. I made full use of my spare time to write and practice the speech until I was confident enough to take the stage.
